I think your over reacting some.  Compared with many of the pw story servers this server is very lenient and none-elitist in its rp style and expectations.   Get the feeling anyone can have fun here, no matter to what standard of realism they live up to in a game world.

Coming from a FR heavy rp server I have trouble understanding how drow/goblins/ogres are even accepted in town let alone approached in a friendly manner by everyone (bar none that ive seen whilst quietly lurking in town).  Here everyone seems accepted, happy happy style.  Its different but not neccessarily better nor worse, taking fun over realism.   I dont mind it either way, but its the same with running, fun  of doing what you want to do sooner over realism of walking and getting bored on a relatively longer trip.  Either way works here.

Server Rules / RE: Polymorphed in town and/or buy/crafting
« on: June 19, 2005, 07:50:00 PM »
I read the first post in this thread and thought that it was a good idea, sounded logical and on other servers I play on similar guide lines are taken.

That pc's would not wander into town using their polymorphed shapes since the npc's which are not represented would not accept them.

This of course would not be a blanket ooc rule but represented by ic laws.  Settlement A, a good human settlement would have its guards shoot on site a zombie form or a troll form.  Settlement B, a half orc settlement might not shoot the troll onsight and might let it through.  Familiars would be not allowed to go around in public in many FR enviroments thus it would be accounted for in ic laws that they are requested by local authorities not to be summoned.

That a polymorphed character can not take part in tradeskills is also  ic'ly logical.  An iron golem with hands the size of ale barrels will not be able to tinker around and make a magical ring the size of which is intended to fit a halfling.

But as I read down the list I became a bit more skeptical of the other opinions posted.  Most particularly after Highwaymans response, not only with the curious opinion that 99% of the time outside of town is combat/crafting but that it should be a ooc balance issue.

It is totally ic for a mage to polymorph into another form in order to do something.  The last server I played on, still do play on, had a crafters guild which would hire out mages to carry ore for them in their enchanced magical forms.  The dwarfs would crack the rocks, put them in bags then the umber hulks would drag them.  Even more fitting with iron golems or giants.

The polymorph spells are better used in a rp fashion than a combat one, using umber hulks to dig through walls, undead to sneak into a crypt, flying capable creatures to fly and so on.  Isnt much point in turning into a giant for combat but is a pretty darn useful one in turning into one to carry a sack of granite rocks, or step over a wall which is curiously blocking the way to all in game avatars.

Granted, a polymorphed creature should not enter town in such a fashion as to be detectable by the npc population but there is no ic reason why they should not be able to do so if none detected.  An iron golem could enter under invisibility or greater sanctuary.

Note that this isnt the opinion of someone who crafts, nor even of someone who has a character on this server yet  ;) Just an opinion of a nwn player who see's many different servers and ways of dealing with things.  After all the core aspect of a rp server is that things are done ic, with ic motivation, action and result.  Saying that you cant carry object X when polymorphed because you can carry too much of it doesnt have much of a rp basis.

Roleplaying / RE: running
« on: June 19, 2005, 07:19:00 AM »
The main bad point of running all the time is that it cuts off interactions with the rest of the world quite dramatically.  This is ok if you have something you want to do and dont want to interact with others.

But for the most part  on a rp server id expect people to want to interact with others much more often.

To take examples, id be much more likely to interact with someone who is casually walking down the street and bumps into me than a speed enhanced monk who zooms past running.

And of more importance to me on the last server I played on, roaming dm's would -always- ignore those running to get from place to place asap(unless it was a monster ambush which isnt much fun half the time).  Whereas if someone was walking from town to town, taking their time, being cautious, perhaps emoting things on the trip a dm would pop up for fun random encounters.  Perhaps have some interesting scenario that could progress into something much more lengthy.

Dont know the gaming community here though, so I dont even know if this server has roaming dm's in that style but its a big thing to miss out on.  But like I say, if your doing something and dont care about anything else but what your doing, nothing lost.

Roleplaying / RE: Character Location Metagaming
« on: June 19, 2005, 06:28:00 AM »
I'm not sure I agree on this.
Sending birds ic for talking between characters over huge unknown distances, and having the messages arrive effectively instantly not taking days or more is worse than doing it ooc.
Can become quite excessive if people are wandering around with their pigeon farms all the time to send messages of importance, like mobile phones.  There should at least be a major time delay in the whole process.  Better to just have no standard none magical ic communication, gives casters who put in the effort to get whispering winds or scrying to get a pay off.

Some people that send messages to other players, are people that oocly want to play togther.   I tend to play with a tiny group of select players in a more pnp like group amongst a server full of others.
It is totally understandable that we would gather and play togther.  Whether we arrange to meet at a specific time each week/day or gather in irc or other chat programs then join game, or send tells when actually in game.  It all works well to get the desired group of friends togther.

Though yes, you are right.  If it is not a 100% known/liked/trusted friend then you shouldnt be pestering them with tell.  Its rude and annoying to say the least but that would come into effect whether there be an ic/ooc arguement or not, thats just common courtesy.

Roleplaying / RE: Roleplaying as a bard...
« on: June 19, 2005, 05:59:00 AM »
This is what bards have lore for.  Use the emote wand to make a lore roll.  Then ask the dm what information you know about said situation.

When not a dm around, you can focus on fictional stories, music, etc but when a dm is on you get to shine fully for what bards are special about.

Eg, on my last server, was a particulaar lore master bard, whenever a situation would arrise in an adventure he'd cast legend lore resulting in like a 60 lore skill sometimes.  Dm would effectively tell him everything possible about the scenario, it was as if the bard was a narator for the scenario knowing so much of it.
Such as.. having read in an old dusty tome in a locked vault(which he broke into) in a small country libary in the outskirts of a town on the other side of the country, finding information in medical documents belonging to a foe that needs to be fought.  Documents telling of an ingredient used in certain dwarven beverages that the foe is heavily illurgic too.  Maybe needs 70'ish lore roll? Then the bard can take out the foe with a drink need no fight it and be a hero!
