Lesson three - Swordplays

*in the distance, the regular sound of metal against stone, probably someone sharpening a blade*

- Hey, belay tis! Go away! Ye gonna kill yerself runnin'round me cutlass!
- Skweek-eek?
- Me sharpenin' my teeth. Betta keep blades always keen, ye never know what gonna happen out there. Hard fight today, Ogres have thick skin ye know, harder than leather. And they got big axes, me nearly broke my weapons trying to parry a blow. Damn, they are too big. The only way is movin'round and sneak-attack 'em in the back while mateys keep'em busy. Cap'n didn't tell how to deal wit big guys like tat, sometimes it does not work...

"...Parrying is generally refered as the skill of using weapons like a shield. But for skilled fighters, it is far more than reacting. It is an art, a deadly dance. Never forget that duelling is a matter of endurance, Suliss. Spare your movements, use your opponent strength. You can return it with just a single move, playing with his sword, exhausting him with his own fury..."

-...and sometimes it does. Then, ye know, argue is like a duel. Recently a small gnome threw stones on me, in de street! Stupid he was. Well, all i had to do, me done it. Don't let violent words come out, point at his madness. Lots of people turn against him, some wit him. Then they all start to argue, punch each other and tis kind of stuff. Bilge! Sometimes people throw stones at ye, or spit on ye. Sometimes people just whine 'round. "Drows killed my father", "Port Hampshire was sacked", "Look at my spider scar", "We can't trust your kind". Always same blah-blah-blah. Just borin'. I've nothin' to do with their bad luck... blame the ones who actually did it. My House was slaugthered. Some drows did it. My sister has been raped, per'ps murdered 'n' I've been sold like meat. Some humans did it. But me don't bark or bite 'nybody all'round like a stupid mad dog. I know betta. Friends and foes, justice, revenge. It's all personnal affair.
- Skweeek?
- No, I'm not alone, i got friends. Me sailor buckos, mostly humans ye know. And I've met some good ones 'round here too. The others... Some o'em are really nasty, some o'em are just plain stupid. They feel like they are at home in tis City. Me guess it will soon be Cap'n Blood's. Coz they are full of themselves, believin' they can handle the big guy on their own. Fo'sure, i finish me job and i go back at sea before the disaster.
- Skweek...
- Aye. Rats always abandon ship in time. Got spare room in me pocket if ye want.

General Discussion / RE: Spitting on Drow
« on: July 20, 2005, 05:30:00 AM »
I think my post was misunderstood. I'm upset, but it has nothing to do with views about RP and drows (one more thread about it anyway).

What happened : this dwarven photographer ran after Suliss and *spits on the drow*. I send him a tell, asking "how can you see I'm a drow?". He mentioned the dark skin of Suliss' arms. So I answered that Suliss has no bare flesh, it was a cloth, and that he could come and check (we were walking away from each other). Then he replied "ok I take it back". So I thank it was over. And then I saw this screenshot and this OOC comment related to an OOC discussion, sounding like I (player) tell lies or something. Humf. Allright, I take it easy. Go on, have fun :)

Suliss definitely wears gloves, sleeves and trousers... I've fixed it since a week now. Anyway, your picture is so bad we can't see anything. But I understand that you call me liar. You cross a line. Geez.

Lesson two - Deadlights and wits

- Skweek?
- Uh, no cheese cake. Not even a small piece o'bread. I got hard time wit nasty green cave bastards, tryin' to get some salt...
- Skweee-eeek !
- What, no need fer salt?! Ye rats know craps 'bout bakery! Bread without salt just tast'like sea biscuits, harder than wood, t'will break yer teeth.
- Skweeeeeeek !
- Aye aye, will ask a friend fer some... Hey, i make a new friend recently. Her name's Kayla. She's nice. She says she worships Az'atta. Well i dont care 'bout gods more than ye care. Rats worship no god, dant they? ...Aye, Cheese God. Me sorry. So Kayla says that no one's beyond redemption. I can understand this, good statement fer buildin' a betta world. But no way. Some bastards really dant deserve it. 'specially two of'em.
- Skweek-skweek?
- Yeah ye can eat their bones, me no need for corpses. Whatever, she can actually chats with animals, even chickens! Can ye believe it?
- Skweek!
- Aye, yer more intelligent than a chicken. But less than two-legs. Ye need to know betta to face our kinds. Ye cant just rely on instinct or strenght to win a fight. Cap'n used to say "deadlights and wits"...

"Use the scene to your advantage. Move, roll, jump, look around, always keep an eye in your back. Deck fights are just a big mess, you are not the only one dealing sneaky death all around. And when it comes to duel fight, never burst into battle frenzy. Hand is swift, but eye is swifter. Taunt, test, find the flaw, then rush into it. It will save you sweat and blood..."

- ... and sometimes it wont, me blood spills out 'nyway. Thats de way I defeated a spider today. Yeah, a big one. Bitch wounded me so badly, it was time to get tricky. Me put both of us into darkness. But I didnt run away, she would have run after me. I hid n'the shadows. Calm, waiting. 'N when darkness fades, me was just next to her, and i pinned her eyes. Both rapier and dagger. Sclorch! Shark bait! My kind so much loves their stinky swaby spiders, gonna send them a piece of this one. Beasts have no brains, there's always a way to own them.
- Skweeek! Skweeek!
- Aye, 'cept for rats. Mighty warriors ye are. Army'o'rats could defeat Cap'n Blood, a pity that young adventurers just keep on slaughterin'ye.

Uh I missed this thread. My PC was the target of the stones. This was really exciting RP. Trying to show who was the mad man, whining around a bit *angel TN face*...

I play a drow, of course I face the consequences... The very point is playing a non-evil drow in a "dynamic" world, where group or individual feelings could possibly evolve. Thank you for this small event.

Lesson one - Self-confidence.

*A voice raises in the dark*

- Someone somewhere must know 'bout me sister. Or tis Armensis. Almost tree years now. What d'ye think little thing, they're still 'live?
- Skweek! Skweek!
- Aye, yer right. Me shadn't hide like yer kind in the sewer. No chance meetin' anyone who heard 'bout 'em. But people are just nasty all around, ye know? Dreadful it is. Me sailor mateys were far open-minded than those bloody adventurers. Cap'n would kick their ass, fo'sure! Giv' them a taste o'the cat 'n' teach them to rely on skills, not skin. I can rem'ber me first lesson...

"Take a blade, and come to me. You know how to use it, good. Armor? Uh, no. Armor does not suit our fight stance. Anyway, look overboard... would you swim with pounds of metal on your shoulders? Forget about it, swiftness and brains will do it. Matter of self-confidence. Right... I'm going to blind-fight for this one. Yes, just try to kill me, I can handle with that *laughs* "En garde!"...

...Freeze! You are dead, this one would have gone through your chest. You know why you've lost such an easy fight? Because men are like dogs. They can actually feel this faint scent in the air, seeing you moving even eyes-shut. This is called FEAR. You have a problem with death, you have a problem with the unknown, and you have a problem with your own skills. You lack self-confidence. Just reflect on this for this night, then I'll teach you how to go over."

- Cap'n was right. I just cant hide and go out at night. I wont find out 'ny piece of information tis way. I must walk 'mong dogs, burryin' fear and unfairness feelin' into me heart, and win this fight! Take care little thing, me weigh anchor, got a job to do!
- Skweeeek!
- Aye, gonna get ye some cheese cake too.

Layonara Server / Canny defense
« on: July 23, 2005, 05:20:00 AM »
About duelist class and the feat Canny Defense.

When you put on an armor or equip a shield, canny defense goes off, as expected. But when you dual-wield with rapier in your main hand and another light piercing weapon in your off-hand (dagger for example), canny defense also goes off.
It may be buggy because the class/feat description does not tell anything about this, and ambidextry is a pre-requisite for the class.

(This bio appears in the character submission )

Belonging to a minor House of Klaterin, Suliss spent a very unhappy childhood. Kind, good-tempered, fighting hard but learning with humility, showing respect for both male and female, curious about the world, intelligent and broad-minded, she eventually became the ugly duckling of the family, the whipping girl. Such a deviance had to be crushed one day or another : she would become a ssins d'aerth, a prostitute for the House...

A few years ago, when High Priestess Azette took over the city, Suliss seized the opportunity. During the major cleansing which followed, she and her sister Ssussun went along with a group of slaves who tried to run away. Trusting the leader of the escapees, a human called Armensis, they rallied the surface, then headed for Fort Velensk. But Armensis was a former thug and a greedy man ; he led the group to a slave merchant called Undmar Stain. Ssussun was sent in the north, while Suliss was sold and put on a slave ship bound to Rilaria. The vessel was attacked on his journey by the Avenger, a pirate ship commanded by Captain Greystark. Slavers were thrown overboard, and slaves were given the chance to join the crew.

Totally broken, half-mad under this sunshine, Suliss drew the attention of the captain. After a strange discussion, she accepted to serve as a crew member on the pirate ship. But was it really a pirate ship ? She has never been able to figure it out. The captain seemed to be always well-informed and the targets were carefully chosen - smugglers, pirates, slavers, illegal goods merchant ships. Strong discipline, no ill-advised bloodshed, but no mercy either...

As a female drow, Suliss has innate fighter abilities and used to train with many kinds of weapons and armors... but her stay aboard the Avenger strongly altered her fight style. She likes to act the pirate way : graceful moves and jumps, no armor to be swifter and be able to swim, light weapons, dual wielding, sneaky attacks to surprise oblivious crews at night and to slash around in muddled deck fights. And she had to endure all of this in daylight... She never got used to it but she learned to live with this physical flaw... as she had to do with her psychological weakness.

Captain Greystark restored her determination, but she still seems to be self-concious and she strongly looks for recognition in her relationships. She tends to be friendly, yet she is apprehensive about being rejected and can easily become either agressive or woeful. Keen and sensitive, she is eager to learn, as she really knows little about surface world except for drow disdainful stories and strange tales heard on the ship.

After several years of this exciting life, she asked the captain to be sailed ashore, and Greystark reluctantly set her on leave. She had some tasks to achieve on Mistone...

"Now I'm alone, and I'm free. Harlun'sir House has never existed in my heart, it's time to get rid of the burden of memories. Suliss Harlun'sir is no more... I will be known as Suliss Dobluth. Grace, the Outcast."
