A living animal.  If your animal gets hurt you can't call another one for another 90 real minutes.  If it gets badly wounded there's a chance it will run away from you.

Im not sure what you mean by hurt? Do you mean any injury, and the companion will not respond to the request to follow?
Or if the companion dies, you can not call another for 90 min?

Is it the same animal ? (not sure how it can be?)
Naming of companions : Rat / wolf etc, or do people name them here ie Wailr (who is a rat)..

I'm working on an Aura of Animal Empathy Skill for the next update, making animals passive on druid/ranger/cleric with animal domain level checks.  This will help the issue of groups of animals and "choosing" who lives.  I've always found the RP tough to deal with having to see only one animal be saved in a group.

This is brilliant. For now, I will RP not having the skill/understanding enough to save them all..

Thankyou :)

//A letter, delivered by a falcon after much coaxing..
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

My dearest Mother,

I hope this letter reaches you, for I have arrived safely in Hlint as you and father instructed. The falcons here are somewhat wary..It took me some time to convince this message to be carried. I have seen their feathers used on arrows here by many..

I passed within the wooden walls of Hlint, and was surprised at the greenery within the town. I expected stone and bare earth. The first thing I saw was a neatly tended stand of barley, with someone moving gently amogst the stalks, harvesting the grains carefully. It is almost as if the trees were replaced with buildings, but the greenery of the land remains here still.

I met Marlena on the road into Hlint, and felt a little more at ease. With her was a strangely short stocky man, Gloinar his name. A dwarf, he told me. Cheerful and appreciative of the outdoors, I took an immediate liking to him.

There are some elves here, one Dalanthas who is most kind, a shining star within this world of strangeness, easing my fears, seeming to look out for me. I smile when I see him..though each time I have, he has been hooded and masked. I know not why..

There are the others here too..of which my fears can not be abated - the darker of our kin who walk freely, and even welcomed amongst the others of Hlint. I am most concerned. And this is not the worst of it. Giants too roam freely here! And I have ran for my life from Trolls..even orcs are welcome.

I advise you never to come to Hlint. Please, tell me when I can come home?

With Love,

Araleth of the Sielwood

General Discussion / Druids view on dire and were animals?
« on: August 15, 2005, 05:29:00 PM »
I have a question on how druids would view oversize, and dire versions of animals..

Would they be viewed as monstrous - damaging to the natural balance of things, (out competing their natural cousins)
or
are they simply a large animal, part of the natural world, in a land such as Layonara.

Also, I presume dire does not mean infernal / or have evil connotations?

Similiary, what is the view on Were versions of natural creatures ?

General Discussion / More questions about Druids
« on: August 02, 2005, 04:12:00 PM »
Greetings to all,

I am new to Lyonara, and newly approved. I have read the handbook, great section there on druids.
Before I see the world, I have two questions to ask.

1 How is the druid's/ranger's animal companin here seen? (a natural living animal which comes when called, or an embodiement of an animal spirit manefested as a gift from the land, to aid the druid / something I havent thought of) ?

2 Animal empathy only works for one animal - how do high level druids explain this saving of one..and the killing of others (due the others still being hostile)
Does a single druid assume they have the right of selection of who lives or dies, or should it be viewed as fate / or lack of skill/understanding on the part of the druid ?
