Roleplaying / RE: In Game Bio« on: August 29, 2005, 11:27:00 PM »
Personally (this is just imho) I'm a believer of nothing at all in the bio. Mainly due to the fact that my characters change quite a bit during play, their personalities change, their looks change, their equipment changes, they may even change what they tell people about their background.
So for me, putting anything at all in a bio is just asking for trouble, it's bound to end up wrong and you have to pester an Admin to change it for you only to have to go through the same process two, four or six months down the track. You may start with a simple bio description with how your character has long flowing blonde hair and peircing blue eyes only to have IC trouble, dye your hair black and have to wear a hood and robe everywhere so when people look at you the description is so woefully at odds with what you actually look like it's laughable. As for putting a short story in your bio, I find that a little too self indulgent . No one can possibly know your life's history by looking at you and to include such an excessive amount of detail in a bio is just asking for Meta Creap when you play.RP for more info? I recon a blank bio says that pretty eloquently, after all, you have gone to the trouble of deleting the usual guff that is there, you must have done that for a reason ![]() I've seen some people put multiple descriptions in a Bio for the different modes the character operates in, awkward but sometimes works. 3
Roleplaying / RE: Hammer of Dorand and crafting« on: August 29, 2005, 11:13:00 PM »
Thank you everyone for the responses.
Good to know about not leaving things in craft containers. Shame, as that would have been a good way to deal with some of the excess. Gloinar is LN in alignment, though at time I think he ends up behaving LG, with a strong role model like Turor he will most likely end up behaving that way in the end. The pilgramage to Lar sounds like an interesting cdq to play, even if it only has the most minimal DM interaction at the end. Gloinars not been to Lar, only explored a little around Hlint, Haven, and a couple of other towns, I don't usually play a whole lot to be going on huge exploratory missions. When I know I can play for a goodly amount of time I'll ping the DM channel to see if anyone is available for a little fun, I guess Gloinar better get crafting Should take me a good couple of weeks to get enough raw materials together to make some finished products.I guess if no DM is on I can always have Gloinar hike to Lar and go through the motions then drop the items in a trashcan or pawnbroker, its fun to go exploring the module. 4

Not the Dwarfcommon Noooooo!
heh heh, seriously mate, thanks for the fun times lately. I fixed my stoopid spelling mistake in previous post ![]() And a big shout out to Acacea too, why not for her creative insults, well crafted and poetic to behold in many languages. You make it hard to type straight for laughing sometimes.

Development Journals and Discussion / RE: Gloinar - A begining« on: August 24, 2005, 11:27:00 PM »
Dear Mother and Father
I hope this letter finds you well. You will be pleased to know I have been traveling with a Dwarf by the Name of Turor Sunderstone. A hardy dwarf of stout habits and good manners, Turor has been helping me adjust to city living in Hlint and Haven. Araleth the Druid has been a steady companion of mine also and I find traveling with her an eye opening time. Who ever knew that elves could change into bears? I have been learning elvin of late, seems many the many elves and humans of town society can speak it, it's quite confusing when they all prattle on in elvin and I hope to understand what they are saying one day. As usual I chitter to the animals we meet, talk to my ox, yes mother I have an ox, and now I have Araleth to talk to when she changes into a bear. I wonder if she would teach me to speak in Bear. Anyway, I am healthy and hale, town life agrees with me and I am sending a dagger I made home for father to review. May Dorand guide your hand. You are in my prayers. Goinar Thorin Goldthew Ungart 6
General Discussion / RE: Creating A strong RP Player base« on: August 24, 2005, 09:27:00 PM »
I look at these things simply.
(I'm a simple sort of guy) I'll answer the questions at the end skip the guff in the middle if you are pressed for time and would rather get back to playing. The World The world is large play, performed in many different halls of a large theatre all rooms interconnected in some fashion. The plot is free form on the small scale but there is an injection of story line from the directors as needed. The players are the actors, the characters their parts. The GM's are both the audience and the directors, stage hands, lighting, sound, behind the scenes people. These roles are taken on by the keener actors to some degree. The players are also the audience to some extent. Quests are scenes of a play where a directory pays more attention than usual. As the play is mostly free form it is the characters and actors of them that have the most influence on the stories, only involving a director when needed or available as the theatre is very large and time is necessarily finite. The actors (or players as they are sometimes called) will have a large influence in the level and quality of acting in the theatre in general, through their interactions with each other and with the directors. The actors are paid in roleplay, items, gold, XP, lots of different things, this leads me to think about theatre balance... The Actors The theatre of Layonara is closed to the public, a small donation (a bio) is required at the door before a prospective actor is allowed access to the theatre. They are welcomed, depending on their time zone, by a variety of other actors through their parts in the grand play. The actors do not know each others parts initially and in time, as the scenes allow, more and more information is relayed to the other actors (some of which may never meet the actor in charge of a part) as to the exploits of a particular character in the play are retold for the amusement of others. Without the actors there is no play. The Parts (characters) Some parts are writ large upon the canvas that is Layonara, epic battles, world shattering quests, daring deeds. Others are but the smallest bit part with the chance to grow into much more with time and attention. As the story unfolds those parts interact sometimes subtly, sometimes overtly. There are no great injustices in pay scales for the actors of Layonara, there are no overnight stars who suddenly have the funds, equipment and power to battle the demonic hoards despite being a terrible actor and only being around for a short time (power levellers). Things must be earned and developed here. With merit based pay for the actors, the inequities of hollywood are, on the whole, absent. Props Layonara features crafting as a dominant force in it's economy. You too can make a better future for everyone, literally. The need for props is important in a play, in the case of Layonara the actors can use their parts/characters to work together for the natural resources available in the theatre in order to make their props. Along the way there will be extra props but of course they can be exchanged with others in the theatre and the actor's part is rewarded handsomely for their time and effort. Sometimes a large group of parts are required work together to achieve certain resources for upcoming scenes, this takes time and most importantly cooperation from the actors responsible for those parts. With a common purpose in mind these free form actors are now working together to a common goal, they form social bonds, get used to working together and grow comfortable with one another. Working together for a common goal makes for a healthy society. The Lounge When not actively engaged in the play, the actors get together in the lounge (forums)and swap stories, banter about the theatre, how the current plot lines are going, have a drink and put their feet up. This is important to them, they spend a lot of time in the theatre and really need to wind down or up again before heading back into the fray of acting. It’s a good place for the directors to let people know of what is coming up in the next few scenes in a broad sense and to let people know where certain special scenes are going to be performed. Talk to people and they will talk back, that’s how conversations start. What does it all mean It means that you have what you need for a great RP server, all the ingredients are there for a great experience for all involved. The particular implementation that you have made works well when all the components are added to a sum. There are static quests and crafting to get the characters together. There are GM run quests for more targeted things to do and to develop the story as a whole. Now I can’t speak for your GM’s as I’m yet to have any interactions but the level of good feedback on the forums is very encouraging. The players are keen and involved, always a good sign. There is an atmosphere of encouraging roleplay and encouraging partying. You are asking for feedback and are genuinely interested in making things the best for everyone; this is also a very good sign. 1. What would make the world a better RP (roleplaying) place to be? More roleplayers and more interesting ways for them to interact. Is there some way to get characters together that has not been done before, that people have to find out in game? Is there a new gem appearing, what is it used for? Has an enemy been spotted where it shouldn’t be, what does it mean? 2. What experiences have you had in Layonara that have made you want to stay in layo forever? The players and the characters, friendly people. High level characters that take the time to talk to low level characters. 3. What was your favorite Roleplaying Moment in Layo? (if different from question 2) Too hard to pin down yet, so much more to do. Needless to say so far my favourite moments have all been character interactions. ![]() (in no particular order) Gloinar catching up with Gloin finally and following him around like a lost puppy dog to buy an iron hammer, eyes bulging at seeing inside his house. Culling the lizard men in the swamp with Turor in the most lawfully organised party in history. Six characters formed up in a variety of fighting formations and everyone being berated for not doing it properly. Having Araleth scare the bejesus out Gloinar by shape changing into a bear. Gloinar stubbing his toe on his armour when he kicked it out of frustration for not being able to find any clay and having Araleth tend a very grumpy and ungrateful dwarf with a broken toe. Making iron arrow heads with only a 5% chance of success o.O 7

NWN Ideas, Suggestions, Requests / RE: My problem with invisibility« on: August 03, 2005, 10:55:00 PM »
I've actually seen how nerfing true seeing to not see sneaked creatures works in practice.
I used to believe it was a good idea, now I'm not so sure. It leads to an ever increasing sneak/spot move silent/listen arms race that drags the players into it wether or not they can move silently. Characters already get away with a lot when it comes to move silent and hide in shadows. True Seeing is one factor in balancing this leniency of the game engine. 9
Roleplaying / RE: Character Location Metagaming« on: August 03, 2005, 10:07:00 PM »
usually nwn time is two real minutes = one game hour ... for the purposes of spells and stuff. [edit] just read it's 4 minutes here
![]() So I guess if the person sending you a tell says how far away the pigeon/familiar/messenger boy is coming from you could respond in the appropriate number of "Hours" ![]() Personally I don't mind tells, I'm used to multitasking and multiconversationing (oh dear another made up word) so the OOC tell just doesn't register in the character's response to his present stimulus. I guess I type fairly fast so I can send tells and hold a conversation at the same time. Of course, I don't expect others to have the same opinion as me so mostly I leave tells alone for anyone I don't specifically know is happy to accept them from me. I guess if someone sends "A pigeon is sent to you asking if the magic sword you have for sale is still available and that Bigo Heado (or other silly name) is currently in Hlint with a bag of gold if you are." as a tell you can always respond with "The pigeon is eaten by gryphons." if you are annoyed by it or are feeling particularly cranky.

Roleplaying / RE: you and your character« on: August 02, 2005, 10:24:00 PM »
Gloinar is my first character here, a gold dwarf priest of Dorand.
I've been reading and reading, looking at gods, races, maps and a lot of other stuff. Gold dwarves strike me as the polite dwarves, cheerful, friendly, dwellers of sunlight and air while still feeling the roots of earth that call to them from their racial history. Miners and crafters but at home in the surface world. Something I wanted to play. The personality always come from inside for me, it's a construct you can create with or without an element of your own personality. Multiple characters means you must keep the various artificial constructs seperate. The background of the character is from experience, I know what it is like to delve the depths of the earth but return home to sunlight and air. Gems, rocks, steel, wood and gold I know, the rest I can research or just plain make up on the spot ![]() I imagine there are resources posted on the forums here aplenty for fleshing out a character though I am happy to find some more if there is any particular element of character creation you are struggling with. 11
Roleplaying / Hammer of Dorand and crafting« on: August 28, 2005, 11:43:00 PM »
I've got a quandry playing my Hammer of Dorand, Gloinar, related to crafting.
Being a Cleric in purposful worship of a god of crafting means some things to me. Craft and help those who craft, the creation is all. Now the problem is for me: What do you do with all the excess craft stuff? It seems disrespectiful to just dump excess molds, patterns, etc in the bin when they certainly could be used for better things. Sure, there is a market to sell those excess but I find it hard for Gloinar to sell these things to people, very especially his new friends. From the character point of view he has been welcomed and helped by the people who frequent Hlint, heck, if he has spare crafting bits and pieces he is very likely to give them to his friends. I would. Therein lies the quandry, this could be bad for the market forces for Layonara, if I have a character that is giving stuff away it could be construed as going against the other characters that are merchants, I don't want to cause OOC problems. While it is not a problem at the moment as Gloinar is relatively low level, in time, giving stuff away could be a real economic problem. Can someone help me out with what other mechanisms there are for the disposal of Craft goods in game. Seriously, Gloinar is very likely to make stuff for characters he knows just because he is fulfilling his god directed duty to make things. IC I am cool with it, OOC I can see it could be a problem. 12

Dear Mother and Father
I hope this letter finds you well. I have reached Hlint Safely, there was a small problem with the journey but apart from what must have been a mirage or nightmare everything is fine. I met an elf, I'd not seen one before as you know, very friendly, named Araleth, I have also found myself spending some time with Marlena, a human of a natural persuasion. I've since met a great number of people and it has all been most intriguing. Araleth has been teaching me to use a bow, it's very useful for fishing with, I've also found it useful against the occasional goblin too, perhaps I will come to like it however unusual it feels to operate. If I make a bow I will understand this archery better than I currently do, I am sure of it. The local craft halls are adequate, well frequented and the tools are suitible for the work I find myself doing. With the help of a local priestess I have been creating holy water to combat the local undead population, Araleth and I have also been working on healing potions to help us with our forays into the surrounding countryside for raw materials. Araleth is a very nature oriented elf, I guess that is how elves behave, she has been most useful inhelping me find what I need, especially the clay for my animal statues I love to make. There are some lovely caverns nearby to town, with a band of other likely smiths I ventured there to mine ore. The local inhabitants objected but as they were one of our blood enemies I was well versed in fighting them so no harm came to me. My new hammer is most effective against goblin heads and my skills with a hammer and shield are improving slowly. Despite gathering a large amount of ore my smelting efforts have yeilded little to date, a simple ingot and I feel I must get back to it so I may one day be as good with a smithing hammer as father. I am too used to clay I think, metal is harder to work with but much more worthwhile, time and practice will tell. May Dorand watch over you Mother and Father, you are in my prayers Gloinar Thorin Goldthew Ungart 13
Layonara Server / Exclamations !« on: August 04, 2005, 12:12:00 AM »
I know there is no swearing.
I was wondering about acceptable exclamations. wether innocious exclamations like "Bloomin" (shortening of Blooming) used instead of other possibly more insensitive words. (though blooming could be a nature based exclamation I guess) or faith based exclamations "By the great hammer of Dorand!" with one or more exclamation marks depending on how loudly your character says it ![]() Other more creative exclamations involving noctorious villians and creatures, "By the blackend wings of the great wyrm of (insert location here)" Just wondering as, if I remember rightly, the Curse voice emote of one of the male voice sets says "By the Hells" so I was wondering where the line between exclamation and swearing is? Not something to stuff up and have a DM jump up and down on you I think. I haven't found any list of common use faith based exclamations yet but there are a _lot_ of posts So i'll keep searching
