General Discussion / RE: Meaning of your forum pic?
« on: October 31, 2005, 03:27:00 PM »
Old thread resurrection! :)

Mine was created by my wife. I adopted the name Jester after she did the pic for her website. :)

On a related note, this is a link to my Halloween Costume this year. :)

I stabbed my a non electic knife into my finger once, saw my bone but felt no pain. I was either in shock or it went through the nerve endings. Anyhow I managed to wrap it with a rag before passing out for three hours. I feel your pain, the non-electrified portion anyway.

I was cutting the top off of a Poinsetta that was blooming too early one year. The knife went through the plant and an an inch and a half up the side of my index finger before stopping. ;) 15 stitches later.. I think Katia was punishing me. heheh.

Know how it feels man, and glad it only took stitches to fix it. A regular knife does damage.. Cant imagine a motorized one.

Is Nela the one in the Forest of Summons that you see right after talking to the Dragon? The lady just before clicking the statue to enter the world?

If so, she's not new. :)

Her dialog is broken though. I've always had to hit escape to exit the conversation as well.

General Discussion / RE: People's Prices vs The Zero Pricing Guide
« on: October 28, 2005, 01:56:00 PM »
Just to chime in with something sortof related:

Part of the problem that leads to 'Market Crashes' and such is that there arent a lot of ways currently to remove gold from circulation.

Houses are a good way to take large chunks out at a time, but with the limited number available, the gold is soon replaced. Decorations for said houses work the same way.

What needs to be implemented are recurring ways for gold to be taken out of the market, to make the remaining gold have more value.

If I have 500,000 in the bank and I'm trying to sell an item for 2,000 I am not going to care as much about huge profits. I might let that item go at near cost just to move inventory.

However, if there were things in place to regularly remove gold from the market, that 500,000 could dwindle very fast, making me refuse to sell at anything lower than 2,000 and perhaps require even more.

When you can do a 'red light run' and come out with 500+ gold just from goblin corpses, the value of gold doesnt seem very great.

As far as suggestions for removing Gold from the market, here are a couple:

Add a Potion Vendor. Make his prices for the potions a lot higher than normal so player alchemists can easily continue to sell for the 'current market value', but if you need some potions and can't find an alchemist, you can dump your gold into disposable items. I think a lot of people would use this.

Same goes for a lot of other disposable trade skill items. Arrows, scrolls, oils, baked goods, alcohols. Offer them on merchants, but jack the prices up alot higher than what players sell the items for. This will get those player merchants out hawking their wares more to make sure people know they are an alternative to the Vendors. And will have people constantly voluntarily removing their gold from circulation.

Sell some more of the ingredients for tradeskills on merchants. Sure, we can buy bottles and flasks. But at 1 gold each, thats not making any kind of dent on the market. Offer essences for alchemy. Arrowheads, juice extracts, bow strings, paper, etc. Again, jack the prices up so people really have to want them to buy them from a vendor instead of a player or getting them themselves.

The point of all this being, the people with boatloads of money in the bank are the people more likely to just buy what they need from a vendor.

I understand this is a Low Magic world, which is a good thing. But if the prices are super high, it will still have the same limiting effect as having to wait to find a player merchant, and have the added bonus of removing gold from the economy, thereby making gold as valuable as it should be. If someone wants to go dump 300K on alchemy supplies from a vendor, let them. Thats 300,000 gold that was just taken out of circulation.

It works the same way in real life. With enough money, you can pay anyone to teach you how to do almost anything.

Just some thoughts. :)

I can sortof understand the reasoning behind people that say "each roll is unique". That is true.

But the rules of averages say that if I have a 50% chance of doing something, and I try to do it 1000 times, I should succeed at around 500 of those attempts.

Now, people that jump in and only try to make 5 of an item are not going to have a very accurate picture, since all 5 of those attempts could fail at 50%.

But if they actually had enough resources to attempt another 95 times, 'on Average' they will succeed at around 50 of them.

Averages are calculated over time, with a boatload of repetition.

As Orth's chart shows, each number from 1 to 20 has received around the same number of 'hits' on average since the chart was implemented.

Sure, there is a little variation, but it all balances out in the end.

EDIT: (I realize, often too late, that I forget the compliments I had intended to include...) To be honest, you've not been as grumpy as you're implying; you've been as civil as I have been, and I burned about 15xp's worth of effort keeping myself cordial and not getting frustrated with my own lack of communication skills. xD Not to mention the fact that I've seen some crazy flaming on other NWN places... Stuff that would turn even your average T2er into a gibbering mass of offense.

I hope my comments weren't viewed as flames or anything. They certianly werent intended like that. :)

I do hope my final point was understood though.

1. Person X comes to Layonara.
2. The rules say "No Stealing from Players".
3. Knowing that rule is there, The person creates a Rogue type character that 'In Character' would be willing to steal items.
4. The person then complains about the 'No Stealing' rule, and tries to bend/break it to justify what their character 'would do'.

It just doesnt make sense to me. :) It's like asking permission after you've been ordered not to do something and done it anyway.

Quick edit: In short, there should NEVER be any sort of OOC consequence that hinders a character's actions, as the character simply doesn't know about those consequences. No matter the benefit, we shouldn't expect characters to act as they wouldn't. Thusly, I feel that if a situation would warrant PC violence, a DM should be brought in to either approve the situation, or force a peacable conclusion; whichever the DM's personal inclination is towards that situation.

If I understand that correctly, you are saying that there should be no personal accountability for the actions of your character?

The Player knows what the rules are. If they choose to play their Character in a manner contrary to what the rules are, whether it would be 'In Character' or not, the Player is still knowingly violating a rule and should be fully held accountable for it. See the thread regarding Personal Accountability in this forum for an expanded explanation.

That is the precise reason that evil alignments are restricted on this server. And CN is only allowed after an 'evaluation period'. Many people would use those alignments as an excuse to be Griefers, and that is the attitude that the rules are in place to protect others against. Knowing the Server Rules ahead of time as a Player should deter people from creating characters that will knowingly violate those rules.

Nobody can knowingly create a character that would be the ideal thug/assassin on a server with rules like this in place, and then justifiably complain about those rules restricting their RP. The rules have been in place long before most characters were created.

After all, the people most interested in it are the people whose interests it is in to fine-tune the accepted etiquette as to looting corpses, especially when someone else was the one that put that corpse there. ^_~

Though another thing... On some servers, there are rules that either a party's leader will gather every last bit of loot, and dole it out evenly, or that d%s will be rolled for loot, or that items will be divided by interest of the players. It's usually one of the three, and I thought it would be a good idea to ask opinions on these as related to Layonara.

---

I'm just curious as to players' opinions in the matter. Personally, I'd gladly sacrifice some amount of the loot I might get for being too slow, in exchange for staying a bit more true to the nature of things, IC.

Most groups that visit places beyond the Red Light caves or the Hlint crypts designate a 'master looter' (or looters) before the first NPC is killed. That person collects all gold and loot off the corpses, and divides it evenly at the end of the adventure. It usually works quite well. On the topic of items being looted, since there is no way to tell what items were picked up off of a corpse, it is pretty much up to the honor system for the looters to share info on what they find. Just make sure to choose a master looter that everyone trusts.

Hey, here's something I've got an active interest in...

There are plenty of times I'll come across a party who's ahead of me in a certain area, fighting along against a group of things. Now, Pyyran's CG, just like me, so his philosophy on this is quite reasonable: If he shoots a few arrows into the bad things, he's helping! So, shouldn't he have the chance to check the corpses? And of course, if the others just move on, without bothering to see what the monsters had... No sense in letting it go to waste, you know?

Hrm. In my opinion, 'helping' like that, especially when it's not needed, just so you can have an excuse to loot corpses is disrespectful to the people that did most of the work to kill those creatures. I've been seeing this happen more often in the last few weeks too, and it's really frustrating. If you were not in the party that started the encounter, you should never touch a corpse from that encounter unless the party moves on and obviously has no interest in the corpse.

Another thing I have been seeing that is kindof along the same lines as the above, is people waiting to 'help' until the creature(s) are almost dead, and then popping off a couple arrows or slashes and taking the kill, xp, and then they start looting on top of that. It's quite easy to get a general idea of how much health something has left by holding your mouse over it. If a person waits until Near Death to start 'helping' just so they have a better chance at the kill shot, I see that as a form of Griefing as well.

Just my .02 :)

Not to offend you in any way mate...but - Layonara online is a VERY mature online game...

While it may not apply to a lot here, it still holds true for the internet in general. I've played a lot of online games in the last 15 years, and the general quality of the people I see online has degraded to the point of being just plain unbelievable.

15 years ago, when all we had were Text MUD's, there was a general sense of honor and respect between players. Sure there were a few bad eggs even back then, but they were not the norm, and could be avoided without too much trouble.

These days, so many immature people think that things like Griefing and Hacking are 'cool' that they have no concept or care about how their actions affect others. As was said above, most people wouldnt dream of doing some of the things they do if the other people were sitting in the same room. It's the complete lack of accountability and annonimity on the Internet that has given people like that the 'courage' to act however they want.

Layonara is a bit more controlled though. The simple fact that there is an application process drives many of this type of person away. Add to that the care and time that the DM staff puts in to make sure that everyone is enjoying themselves, and the 'Griefer' types simply can't survive here. I wish the rest of the Online games out there could have a Team as dedicated as the one we have here. It would certianly make the Internet a more enjoyable place for those of us who do hold ourselves to a higher standard.

Again, Well said, and I hope everyone reads and tries to understand this post.

It wouldnt be possible. Since you are a cleric/fighter already, you couldnt get the Arcane Magic prerequisite to become a Spell Sword.

General Discussion / RE: Cleve with Duel weild?
« on: October 20, 2005, 10:49:00 AM »
From what I have seen with it, you still continue to get your regular attacks, even though you are cleaving.

Grog is pretty devastating against any lower HP creatures with his Great Cleave.

I have noticed as well that if it takes more than 1 round to kill the swarm around him the Great Cleave speed will increase because he has killed more than one creature with a regular attack, doubling or even trippling the Great Cleave hit-rate. Assuming he doesnt miss, that is.

If he gets more than 10 or 15 creatures around him, he really turns into a 'Blender' by the time the last one falls.

It starts off pretty slow. 1 kill per 1.5 seconds or so, but by the end he is killing 3 creatures every second.

As stated above, it is only really usefull against smaller creatures. If you can't get kills in one hit, then Great Cleave wont do you much more good than Cleave.

Even against smaller creatures though, it can save a lot of health in the long run when you can clear 15 goblins in 2 or 3 rounds instead of soaking damage for 10 rounds while you kill them all.

Just for Fun / RE: Deaths : both spectacular and dumb
« on: October 19, 2005, 01:56:00 PM »
A dumb one for me was with Grog when he first went into the goblin caves.

He killed a group of melee goblins, and an archer knocked him to -1.

He bled to -8 and stabilized. As soon as he healed back up, the archer knocked him to -3 before he could drink a potion.

Bled to -9 and stabilized. Stood up and same thing. -3 again.

Bled to -7 and stabilized. Grrrr... Stood up and tried to run out of range, but didnt make it.

Arrow took me to -5 and I bled to death.

Whole process took like 15 minutes.

In addition, I've read that a PRC won't be approved until all base classes have at least 5 levels.

i.e. you will need to be at least Cleric 5/Fighter 5 to be approved.

As a member of "We", "We" take great offense at being excluded from "Them". "We", being a subgroup of "Us", are truely sad that "We" can not be members of "Them" or "They". Please refrain from the exclusion of the global organization "Us" in the future, and do not discriminate against those individualists among "Us" that prefer to be called "You".
