Amen and thank you.

Ok, thank you.

My idea was to avoid anything too structured (mainly due to the fact that ghostwise appear somewhat isolationist), and while they aren't particular attached to any deity (except perhaps Katia), druids do seem a bit too structured, organised and political.

Do you know how many ghostwise there are around currently? If there are too many, I'll drop ghostwise altogether. Rare should be rare, after all.

Well, ghostwise adventurers are uncommon and they are walking about because they do not fit in ;)

Another question: Do druids have to take a deity?

I didn't say that most people say that drow are on their top 10 fear list (as, obviously, most PCs don't have them as such), but rather that if you walk around asking the WLs, you will notice that they are generally not so very fond of drows and rather careful around them (rule nr 1: never trust a drow!) (...)

Isn't this because to become a WL you must be a reasonable roleplayer?

Playing a character without prejudice IS simply bad roleplaying.

Casting aside all prejudices over board after a couple of days, weeks and months IS bad roleplaying. Sure, you may learn to trust a single individual over the years. However the "good" drow make out an infinitesimal part of the drow population (an interesting question: how on earth can such a cruel society foster "good" drow?). The chances of such individuals even coming to the surface is even smaller! In spite of that it happens now and then anyway! It can not be anything other than a grand scheme to bring down the surfacers (literally).

Point is, the WLs tread carefully and follow the OOC rules, without entirely abandoning the distrust of drow. They show caution and never trust a dark elf.

Bad roleplaying.

@Crunch, each one is an item--empty or not.

Each item in the container is checked as well.

I started playing Icewind Dale again recently. For some reason I tried to use the mouse scroll wheel to zoom in and out, only to get disappointed every time. I even caught myself doing it in Firefox...

General Discussion / RE: Implosion and Similar Spells

@Chrys

Hi, I just reread some of your posts. What I think you're trying to say, is:

You dislike that fully prepared fighters (or whatever) can go down by a single spell, even if the chance is even 1 in 20.

Correct?

If that is it, I think you to some point are right. It is somewhat unreasonable that it may be an "all or nothing" hit. I am really no big fan of instant kill spells, though the effect is quite impressive and intimidating. I agree that players are special and should be treated special. Layo handles this just fine, allowing players to respawn in return for a little fatigue and perhaps a death token.

While death spells sometimes are "all or nothing", Layonara is definitely not. When your character dies, he is not gone. He can respawn and go out adventuring again. You have your second chance. Next time, push someone a good distance ahead of you and keep a fair distance yourself not to get caught in the blast.

The death token system adds just a little more risk to adventuring, which should be fine.

A few examples and ideas that could make things a little more interesting:

1. If a spell like Implosion should be "smoothed out", it could scale from death to hitpoints damage, depending on your character's saving throw, resistance etc. This way, it would no longer be an "all or nothing"-spell, and probably even more useful to casters, heehee. A high level character might not fear death from Implosion, but rather a large hitpoints loss.
As far as I remember, Finger of Death/Slay Living already has this behavior.

2. Another alternative is to make spells like death ward protect only against the first impacting death spell. That'd perhaps make the real death spells more feared and useful from a DM perspective.

3. An example from a project of my own: A custom poison system. The effect of the poison depends on your fortitude save. If it is low enough, the poison can result in instant death. There are two saves involved: A save vs. constitution (and fortitude!) loss and a save vs. death if your fortitude save is lower than 3. Saves vs. death never occurs upon the impact hit, but rather as a result of the longterm effects of the poison so you can always drink an antidote if you have one. It takes at least 30 seconds from the impact to the longterm effects kick in.

...Except that knowing the DCs of enemy attacks may take the risk/exciment out of combat, since you KNOW that there is only 5% chance of being affected. Even good roleplayers tend to metagame.

@Varka
For most parts it can't be done. Spells, custom feats and other custom effects can be altered to use custom functions for taking saving throws, skill rolls etc., but combat information per se cannot be altered or hidden.

Edit: Actually that is not true. Editing the dialog.tlk file and changing the dialog text might be a way to do it

Layonara Server / RE: Project Team Applications open once again
« on: October 03, 2005, 11:04:00 PM »
Scripting.

I've been working with NWN for the last 2½ years, with both scripting and custom content. I am a professional software developer (ERP systems) and have been programmering for the last 7-8 years. I work on a hugely ambitious PW project with tons of custom systems for handling custom factions, crime and punishment, gather and crafting, spawns, spell casting, new classes and skills, experience, persistant traps, faction wars and so on. While I am usually stuck up with coding, I have some spare time now and then and wouldn't mind to contribute minor scripts, for example for items, triggers etc..

I don't play on Layonara, but some of my friends do, so I tend to keep an eye on events and characters on the server. Feel free to ask Harlas, Destropterammer (Hargranar) and Varka for further information about me. I created an item for Harlas' orc campaign, though there was some implementation details due to Layonara-specific issues. Not sure what happened to it, but I think Orth imported and fixed it.

Ask A Gamemaster / Ghostwise halfling deities?
« on: April 26, 2007, 07:40:16 AM »
Hey

I am considering making a ghostwise halfling cleric going about on a Ritual of Change. However, I can't really find anything on which deities could be acceptable for that race. The only thing it says is that they don't worship Prunilla and Deliar (and Katia).

I am considering something a little neutral:

Xeen -
because of wine and festivity, which usually means something to halflings. And absolutely not because Xeen also equals the lash

Lucinda -
neutrality, magic ~ it might be stretchable to spirits and ghosts

Katia or Mist -
because that people that depend on agriculture usually have respect for the weather and a priest to appease the weather goddess probably wouldn't be a bad idea. Anyway, the church isn't structured, so more peaceful individuals could exist

Kithairien -
because of the close ghostwise relationship with the wild elves

Shadon -
because it is neutral and might do for a halfling. On the other hand, it doesn't fit the ghostwise halflings very well, but there can always be exceptions

Stretching it futher, the following may be of interest:

Corath -
because of the death domain. Death ~ ghosts, spirits. Other than that, Corath is waaaay too extreme imo

These are just ideas, and I would like to have a second opinion before I go wild and make up a story about how he got to go on the Ritual of Change

General Discussion / World leaders
« on: March 01, 2007, 03:36:19 AM »
I may have overlooked this, but where can I see why a person is a world leader? I've found the world leader index, but there's no details of why the listed individuals are world leaders.

Where can I find this info?
