General Discussion / Re: Layonara, NWN2 and Beyond...« on: June 05, 2006, 12:40:21 PM »
Another point of interest... you may be playing NWN1 on Layonara alot longer than you think. When NWN2 comes out, Obsidian has already stated that they won't be supplying the DM client on the CDs. They state is should be available as a download but as we all know if everyone is downloading it then you may not have it in hand right away. Further, most thinks that are brand new and a download mean last minute debugging, minimial quality assurance, etc. I am not holding my breath that the DM client will be worth much before a few patches on it. Call me "cynical".
Since Layonara relies on the DM client so heavily, I don't see a transistion from NWN1 to NWN2 for some time... even if NWN2 does manage to make it out on time. But then I am just a player here. 2

First, NWN2 will be based on the DnD 3.5 ruleset which is different from the DnD 3.0 ruleset that NWN1 is based on. There are probably a number of features, etc that won't translate well between 3.0 and 3.5. Second, I heard specifically that your character created in NWN1 probably won't transfer over to NWN2 because the game mechanics are different but also because of graphics changes between NWN1 and NWN2. The good news is that any of the custom scripting will more than likely be able to be exported from NWN1 to NWN2 which should expidite the module building side of custom content. 3
General Discussion / RE: Ummm Army?« on: June 05, 2006, 06:33:27 AM »
Let me give you a personal slant on why I never joined the military... and I am an old fart with a lot of real life experience. The reason I never joined is I am truely too chaotic in nature. Think about this and your own personality... are you chaotic?
I went to college and got a degree. I have worked nearly 15 years in my field of experience and I have moved 6 times and have had 8 bosses with four different companies. The reason I move around: I don't like people telling me what to do. I don't like working for someone that I dissagree with. I don't play office politics and kiss up to my boss, etc. Now, you may say I am just a screwball or a hard-head, but you should answer these questions for yourself (which apply to real civil jobs as well as in the military): 1) Can I take direct orders from my supervisor/commander/etc and follow the orders even if I don't agree to them? 2) Am I willing to follow the rules every time and not try to bend them to what I want? 3) Will I do something that I know is wrong but, I do it because I know I won't get caught? 4) Have I ever been able to stick with something and see it through even if things go wrong? i.e. Can I handle a four year (or more) commitment? I mean this because if you go military and take it for four years you can not leave and you will be forced to take orders or you will be in very serious trouble. You can not just walk away from the military. 4

General Discussion / RE: Half-Giant customisation« on: June 01, 2006, 05:22:30 AM »
Do you have all the hak paks installed?
Can you use a shield at the same time as a large weapon? (which would imply you have been converted to a large class instead of the default medium half-orc). Do you have a skin on your character that adjusts your ability scores to that of a half giant? (this would message you as soon as you login that your subrace is valid, etc). If you can answer "yes" to the above, then it sounds like you were transformed to a static model half giant. I would report this as a bug on the bug forum. 6
General Discussion / Re: half giants duel weild« on: May 30, 2006, 11:41:28 AM »
So then a half-giant should be able to dual wield two large weapons.

General Discussion / RE: half giants duel weild« on: May 30, 2006, 06:58:17 AM »
You are talking about game mechanics here. First, all of the original character races are of medium or smaller size. The half giant, as you know, is considered large in size.
creature size....max size 2-handed....max size primary hand.....max size secondary hand ..........................................................while dual weilding.........while dual weilding small ...............medium......................small ..............................tiny medium .............large........................medium ..........................small large ...............large.........................large................................medium Note that a shield can be substituted for the off-hand weapon in the above table... i.e. a spear (large weapon) and a shield can be used for example by a large creature. So you will see that a half-giant, considered "large" in size, can only use a medium weapon in the off hand while dual weilding. So the best a half-giant might do is something like a greatsword in the primary hand and a longsword in the secondary/off-hand 8
General Discussion / Re: NWN2 News: DM Client« on: May 18, 2006, 06:04:26 AM »
That is just .... NWN2 should be released as a full game not just an Official Campaign for single player mode. This proves the game designer is more concerned with the OC than with satisfying those of us that multiplayer online.
This does not even begin to address the persistent world issues they will most likely overlook... leaving the programs in the established PWs out there to fix what the manufacture has no time alloted for. 9
General Discussion / RE: An Interesting Article Yet Disturbing« on: May 18, 2006, 05:24:08 AM »Quote xXDenizeNXx - 5/17/2006 5:35 PM Here is some food for thought I read somewhere: "Those that play persistent worlds typically own more than one copy of the game and invest exponentially more time and devotion to the game to customize it for long term play"... that is true... I believe this arguement. However, I also believe that Obsidian is just like any other company and they need to make the most profit, meaning the demand for an Official Campaign (OC) is going to sell more copies than the very small portion of us that play the game for real years on persistent worlds (PW)s. So it is natural for Obsidian to cater directly with their limited resources to add what content will sell the most copies of the game and hence make them the most money. The most copies will be sold to people that play the single player game and work through the OC. I think I read a report that about 75% to 80% of the buyers of NWN never played online (i.e. through Gamespy, etc). Also, the cynical side of me says that a game company wants most players to buy, to become bored with the game in a year or two and to place the game on a shelf... in that way the company has a newly released game or expansion timed just when folks are looking for a new game... and players have to dip into their wallet once again. Did you ever talk to your grandparents about the good old days when a water heater lasted 30 years? Why do you think they stopped making them last 30 years where you only had to replace the electrical elements? Because noone was buying a new water heater. Now adays, you can buy one that lasts as little as 1 year with most lasting 5 years. This is a business decision that a product fails at 5 years and you have to replace it... hence the company can count on people buying one every five years. Just like a car manufacturer would never sell a car that can last 30 years, you will never see sold a game or a computer that won't need to be upgraded or somehow have money spent on it in a period of 5 to 7 years... otherwise the company selling the product made too much of a durable good and goes out of business because folks are not repeat buyers. 10

I use Fraps. The trouble is the free version only gives you a short record time. The full version is well worth paying for in my oppinion. The trouble is you better have a large harddrive and good connection bandwidth or Fraps will get choppy.

General Discussion / Re: NWN Cd-Key« on: May 15, 2006, 12:01:09 PM »
You don't want your friend competing with you for your online game time... what I am saying is as long as your CD keys are in use anywhere on Gamespy network of NWN servers, noone else can use them. That protection has been in place since Gamespy hosted the connections.
I will tell you this, since the diamond version of NWN came out, the platinum version (with NWN, SOU and HOTU) is pretty cheap on Ebay, etc. I picked up a copy of this for my brother for $15 with shipping just recently. Get your friend to buy the CD keys by buying a version of the game. There are no cheats that will work for this. It really is pretty cheap and it is not worth trying to do a work around and possibly getting banned from or in trouble with the DM staff of Layonara. 13

Fixed Bugs / RE: New character halfgiant --- appears as halforc« on: May 13, 2006, 03:34:29 PM »
I am still having problems. First, thanks for clearing out my vault. I went in last night and made the character. It went through and adjusted his stats, but his physical set appearance never changed to that of ogre model. He still looks like a half orc. I explored around, earned some exp and got some gold. I logged off.
This morning I got on, the character was there... experience showed up still, exp needed to make level 2 was 2500 (which seems right for ECL 3 half giant). But the stats were not correct. I tried resting adn then stats adjusted properly to Halfgiant. however, character still looks half orc and not half giant. Can someone fix this? 15

Development Journals and Discussion / Raknur's Development« on: May 19, 2006, 06:31:14 AM »
After leaving his family upon his step-father's death, Raknur managed to work as a mercenary with a guard outfit supporting a traveling merchant. It was by chance that this merchant brought his goods for sale, his sales companions and guards to the land of Rilara. In those lands Raknur heard spoken of a monestary on the shore of Io Lake of the Ledros Mountains. This monestary was said to be the balance of the elements of air, water, fire and earth. Raknur's following of Grannoch naturally inclined him to hold interest in the elements and their balance.
Raknur soon had enough coins in his pocket to break free from the mercenary work and seek out the monestary of "The Path of Elemental Balance" for himself. He knew deep down that this place did exist and that he would find his purpose in life in this way. It did not take long for him to find the shores of Io Lake. Some time Raknur spent questioning of the locals, and offering prayers to Grannoch to be worthy of such service to the elements. One day a human in simple robes the color of crimson approached him. This male called himself Grandjurin and after speaking with Raknur the two traveled to the place Raknur sought. Raknur swore he had passed this very place twice before yet he did not see it for what it was. After some prayer, reflection and questioning by some of the monestary staff, Raknur was asked to choose a path within the four choices of the Elemental Balance. Raknur slept on this decision for days and explored his own mind and spirit for the answer. Finally, he returned to Grandjurin and the others to announce that he was ready for the task to become an initiate of The Order of the Flame. For this order was most aligned to what Raknur sought and believed in. It was after several discussions and challenges that Raknur was accepted to enter into this order as an initiate. Long he trained, many questions he asked, and much more he learned. Finally, Raknur was released into the world to see to the balance of the elements so as to hold true to the ways of the Path of Elemental Balance and The Order of the Flame. 18

Fixed Bugs / New character halfgiant --- appears as halforc« on: May 12, 2006, 04:54:36 AM »
The character "Raknur" was approved for play in your specific forum. I went in and created the character but I did not pay attention to the minimum stats... in the short version of it, the character was booted because of stats issue ... one stat below 6 after sub race modification.
I exited out and then back into NWN; I tried to recreate the character using the same name. The system allowed me to do so, I entered game, no trouble. I walked around some and several autosaves occurred. I logged out. I came back later and found that the original character with the illegal stat below 6 was what is in the server vault. The second attempt to create and save the character is gone. So, seems I need to ask the DM team to delete the bic file so I can start all over. character: Raknur Gamespy name: courageandsteel EDIT 05/13 ... see below... character usable but not the right appearance
