Aegidriel sits at a back table in the Wild Surge Inn, idly turning a ring over and over in his hand, watching the faint torch light flicker in the set gem, a heavy amulet with the same gem hangs from his neck.

"My prowess has definately increased with the purchase of these articles." He thinks to himself, "The halfing woman Jennara is a fine craftsman, and the other woman, by Folian I cannot recall her name... but the amulet she sold me is beautifull, and potent."

His mind then turns to the ease with which he was able to parry the blows of his adversaries after his recent purchases, turning aside and dodging from surely lethal blows. Impressed by the fact that two minor bits of magical jewelry could make such a marked improvement in his fighting style.

Server Rules / Re: Paladins
« on: July 06, 2006, 01:52:25 PM »
First, a disclaimer.

I've never met a paladin being played on Layonara, so I don't know what they are like here, but...

I think paladins are one of the most complex character types one can play, to devote oneself to the defense of ones faith through martial arms is not an easy task to do, or roleplay. THAT is why so many fall into the stereotypical 'Lawfull Stupid' mold. It is hard to justify some of the outright carnage vs. some of the more peachfull aspects normally asociated with people of faith. I think this is where the greater player base is to blame, they expect paladins to be without fault, honest, virtuous and pure as the driven snow. I on the other hand see them a bit differently.

Lancelot, from the Arturian (or Arthurian if you want) was the greatest of Arthurs knights, devout and pious, yet he was duped into an affair by Elaine of Astolat, whereby Galahad is born, the bastard son of a paladin-esque figure. Lancelot rejects Elaine, due to his love of Guinevere, the beloved of his king. His love for Guinevere ultimately brings down the court of camelot. A paladin with definate flaws, but definately more interesting than Paul the generic Paladin.

It's a lot more interesting to roleplay someone with exterior motivating factors other than the need to feed, shelter and upgrade thier equipment. And hey, if you are in a party with a paladin all you have to do to motivate them is say "I just hope that -Target X- stays away from those innocent (Y) at that place (z), it would be a bloodbath, and think of those poor children at orphanage (xyz) of (insert paladins diety here)."

The zealot, who actively seeks out evil, like a holy ranger, patrolling the countryside.
The crusader, who takes his faith into new lands, and attempts to convert the natives (sometimes by force)
The protector/avenger, who takes on a specific cause and attempts to preserve or avenge it.
The curator/scholar, who collects and catologues  holy relics for the chucrch (Think a more pious Indiana Jones)

Anyhow, there is a lot of complexity to be found within the class, but it's HARD. The problem is paladins need to get down off thier high (war)horses and be PEOPLE too. If all they do is insert thier rod of holiness and strut around acting holier than thou, myeah :P

I would be interested in purchasing the clothing, if you are willing to hold them while I gather funds? If not I completely understand, money talks and all.

I also think Acacea said what I was trying to say, but better on some regards, so, yeah. I nod in admiration to acaceas command of the english language.

descrimination is only illegal, or 'wrong' in certain matters, medical aid, housing, employment, etc. Most of these are governed by civil laws. EVERYONE descriminates, and is descriminted against.
You consciously descriminate when you choose your friends, the type of bread you like, the brand of vehicle you prefer to buy. A person who's moral or religious beliefs are one way will descriminate FOR people who hold the same or similar views and AGAINST those who's are outside a reletively small 'comfort zone' It's human nature. Descrimination is not the same as racism or sexism. Not everyone is a racist or a bigot, everyone descriminates. I descrimintatred against a dozen other NwN PW's when I came to play here.

Descrimination based on race, sex, religion, nation of origin or sexual orientation on Layonara is just silly. It's a game, and unless you come out and TELL people "Hey, I'm a three legged martian who worships a 4th dimensional being that resembles a cornflake, and let me tell ya the stories about what we REALLY do with those probes..." Well, then, who knows what you are,do or look like. I personally dnot CARE. I am here to interact with your character, not you. When I get groggy and log off I don't say "Gee, I really hope that John Jones isn't around tomorrow, his green skin and wierd theological ideas really make me uncomfortable" I think "I hope I get to RP with some new folks tomorrow, today was lots of fun!"

I think family friendly is a lot easier to maintain if a certain relistic distance is maintained. I don't know any of the people who play here, we could pass on the street and I wouldn't recognise you. I'm never going to go out of my way to MEET anyone from here in RL. I have a seperation between my fantasy and my reality, my passtime and my RL that I think, personaly is healthy.

If I start discussion my religious beliefs with you, or my sexual orientation, or lack thereof, that lends itself to people having reason to descriminate. If I am just Aegidriel, that elf guy. Well, you may descriminate, because your character doesn't like elves, or blonde male characters, of people taller than him, whatever, but it's in RP, it's against my character, and not me, the same holds true in reverse. I think THAT is the foundation of being family friendly. If you set boundries about what you are willing to divulge, and keep your private stuff out of the public eye, theres no room for anyone to form a descriminatory opinion about you.

Sorry, school is still too fresh in my head, civics class debates about this same topic went on for weeks. I must have more sun, and bikini clad females in order to obliterate all learning from last year from my head!

I guess to summarize bluntly, and hopefully not sound like a complete jerk, it's a game. I didn't come here because I want to get to know YOU. I want to get to know your character, I want to RP mine, adventure with people who want to have fun and forget about you all when I turn off my computer.
This isn't life, and you are annonymous if you choose to be. If you choose not to be, prepare for people to make value judgements about what you choose to tell them about yourself, and prepare to be descriminated for or against because of it.

Personaly, I think if you enter into a situation where you are conversing about something you feel strongly about, with someone who holds an opposed view, which in reality has nothing to do with anyones ability to play the game, it's never going to turn out to your satasfaction.

I feel the need to parry some blows, and maybe find me a healer who wants to get out of Hlint.

Aegidriel would purchase the iron rapier from you. Look for a blonde elf wearing a green tinged mail shirt. (or just PM me with a time to meet)

Aegidriel sits on a bench behind the inn in Hlint, looking at a pair of dusty, worn and slightly pungent green boots that the wagon master handed him as 'reward' for retrieving the head of the goblin leader. Aegidriel had been on the verge of objecting at the reward when Ronus had seemed to anticipate the upcoming debate and stated 'Jus' put'em on Lad, and ye'll see' Aegidriel had, and indeed, they were most comfortable.

As he mused over his new boots he recalled the warrior that had helped him attain them, a man he had met only once before, with the lady Kira, at that time she had asked if he wished to accompny the two of them, and after discerning that his help wasn't NEEDED he had declined. Tonight when Aegidriel approached he expressed a need for help and the man had willingly led the expidition.
Nodding, Aegidriel learned to respect the mans attitude, he didn't refuse those in need, but he wasn't party to aiding those who could provide the desired result for themselves, not a bad outlook he thought.

Form my 17 year old perspective I don't see anything wrong with a gay character at all, if you wanna be gay, by all means! Just means more girls out there for me!

*looks around* Now where'd that attractive monk gal go to? Hmmm..

Seriously though, theres already guidelines in effect for what is acceptable and what is not, to RP sexual activity to me is kinda... 'icky' for lack of a better term, I always assumed that the RP happens when you are on line, and the more virtual-physical aspect of your characters romantic lives happens when you aren't logged in, and is implied by being 'in a relationship' theres no need to RP it.

To me the same guidelines should apply for homo or hetero relationships.

One question, is there any way to dictate what sort of ads get placed on THIS site? The ones I see up there now are for powerleveling services and gold/platinum purchases for EverQuest, which as a gamer I find completely distatefull, people that offer those services have been banned from advertising in many gaming magazines, and are a huge reason why EQ, WoW, etc, etc all suck.
Sorry, don;t take this the wrong way, just asking if it's possible to have car ads or something requested.

Understandable, it's a tough call to make, I imagine that spreading the resources out a bit isn't really an option either right?
Like a member hosting the website, forum and LORE for example? I know I have access to really cheap web hosting with unlimited B/W, but letting something like this get out of your direct control might be a problem. like said member gets mad at you and takes the forums offline or something :(

Sorry to see it happen, but it's understandable, I just wish my 17 year old budget could contribute. I've only been here a week and already I'd pay to play here.

Aegidriel sits in his room at the inn in Hlint, his hands work without direction, cleaning the fine creases in his rapier with a piece of ironwood bark, and polishing with an oiled cloth, as his mind wanders back over the days events.

Aegidriel journeys far from Hlint, past Fort Llast and Krandor, through the broken woods. He avoids what he can, and is able to nimble dispatch two ogres by turning thier blows with sword and buckler, striking only when he is sure to hit, and choosing his moment. Then past Fort Hope, narrowly avoiding an encounter with a fierce griffon he paused to rest near the outskirts of Port Hampshire, where he happened to meet a man named Sans who was looking for some Sage.

They talked of herbs and thier uses, and Sans confirmed what Aegidriel had heard, that corn has many uses and that prices for goods were better in Port Hampshire than elsewhere. Armed with this knowledge he thanked Sans and made his way into town, buying several boxes to hold the corn he would collect, a light chain shirt and a new shield. After the day was done Aegidriel was womewhat wiser for his meeting with Sans, better equipped and had explored the areas near Port Hampshire, Fort Velensk, and Fort Hope.

There were a few close calls, but overall his journey had been profitable. Now, as he sits tending his equipment and recalling the days events, a new energy begins to build within him, and he looks forward to whatever challenges await this world after the defeat of Bloodstone.

"I should have paid more attention to my father..." The thought rang out in Aegidriels mind as he sat slumped in darkness , dead but unknowing, the last thirty minutes of his 'life' a fog to him. His father had always cautioned him that goblins were only really dangerous in a crowd, today he learned that lesson first-hand in the depths of the red light caverns, though whether the lesson will sink in is yet to be seen.

Aegidriel stops at the inn in Hlint to rest and recouperate, for a few coins more the innkeeper is willing to close off the kitchen for an hour and he soaks the much and mud off his body that seemed to dry in layers in that wretched swamp, one atop another, making him stiff and slow as the lizardfolk that dwelled there, not a pleasant feeling at all. As he sits and soaks in the tub his mind wanderes...

Kira, strange woman, her grace was superb to watch though, and her blows unquestionably lethal, especially that kick of hers. I found myself distracted though...I fended the lizardmans blows easily enough, but imagine what she could do with a light sabre in her hands!

Ah well though, such is the manner of learning, I can see there are far more styles of combat than what I have been exposed to by my extended family, though I've not met one yet that fights as I do with a blade, relying on agility to turn a blow, or simply not be there, perhaps there is a calling here for one such as me, surely an unusual style of fighting may attract a pupil or two...

Bah, what am I speaking of! I'm barely past the novice stage of my training as it is, my technique needs much improvement. not to mention the hazards I've encountered here are far more deadly than my cousins armed with wooden sticks. Perhaps with time I can dream these dreams, but for now I'll concentrate on honing what I know, and finding my sister...

With that his thoughts drift to memories of his family in happier times, when he was very young, and the looming threat of Sinthar Bloodstone had yet to come crashing down apon them all.

All too soon there was a pounding at the kitchen door, and Aegidriel gathered his things, dumping the murky bath water into the floor drain and retired for the night, quietly sparring the flickering shadows in his room while the inn became more raucus with the evening crowd.

sorry, didn't mean to strike a nerve there. If I were to instigate anything like that my uncle tells me to make sure via tell that the recipient of my racial hatred is willing to RP the moment. So.. uh, yeah. I'm going to go remake the character I just muffed up :P

It's taking me longer to get this character right than it did to get the application approved!

My uncle doesn't play much anymore, he works out of town most of the week and only gets back here late friday, then leaves early monday too, so he's busy catching up. I live downstairs from him, it's cool though, he takes me for rides on his motorcycle on the weekends and he took me, my brother and his kids off to a renessaiance festival where we got to strap on armor and whck each other with wooden swords, that kind of stuff. I also have no idea if I spelled that right.

But hey! I'm approved!

Yeah, though, when my uncle gets back tonight I'll tell him that I got a character approved and maybe he can tell me who some of you all are :)

Alright, the pool was lame... full of 9 an 90 year olds, yuck, I'm not that twisted!

It's not fair!

It's only nice here about 2.5 months of the year, the rest of the time all the girls bundle up in layers that would make an army ranger envy thier bullet-proof..ness. Wheres the bikinis!?! Wheres the hot girl from school that doesn't know I exist!! She's supposed to be sunbathing in something resembling her underwear!!

It's just not fair! hehe.

I know patience is a virtue, but I'm about out of virtue.
*checks the approval page again*

I wish I had a motorcycle *sigh*

Well.. at least I have a little brother, now all I need is a hose, some big rubber bands and a diversion, maybe I can salvage something from the day untill my character is allowed in.
