General Discussion / Re: Archer Level Requirements

I'd gladly be ranged if it wasn't for the damage range... dual wielding i attack three times in a row giving 6~9 damage each hit, ranged i attack only once with a 6~7... or twice with rapid shot but misses half of the shots... i honestly think ranged combat is a massive disadvantage in nwn.

If Pvp is restricted to gm supervision, there should always be at least one gm online, no? I wouldn't have trouble calling one of course, since both parts would certainly agree, but i had no luck so far finding one.

About the dicebag... it feels like holding some commando play doll on your hand and making '*puff* *puff*' with your mouth while throwing it at another one =|

Anyways, i gave my reasons, and it's obvious to assume the rule won't change, so... i'm satisfied at least people avaiabled themselves to discuss this.

What do you mean by 'above that'? Is uo some kind of 'under-game'?

Mikli, i see your point, is saves the gm a lot of work... but if you look through another point: such class combinations are ALREADY restricted not giving a deep rp base, which is analyzed through the character development topics. The difference would be that some people would begin trying to make them, and would be consequently denied such rights... so the aditional trouble I see is just a couple of denials... such combinations wouldn't happen one way or the other.

And the pvp i'm talking about is still not planned or war-like... but punches exchanged in a tavern or some wrestling favouring the balance of nature. It would be an integrant part, another facet of a realistic rp, not rp being a detail between the pvp sections...

I never argued pvp in favor of factions, i just favor it for the sake of reality.
Rapes were banned in my previous server justifiable because of the enormous headaches it gave to the gm's, mainly because people didn't ask for ooc permission before. And about the stolen item... giving it back? This is a long term agreement and does not, in any case, helps to simulate real world. You lost it, that's lost, happens and the world moves on.. if you get robbed, that item is most likely lost forever, and you must get a new one.

Things were pretty simple.. there's either a mutual agreement [screenshot] or a ban. In Ultima Online rp servers that works fine, even though the game is widely known for it's pvp and even war servers... probably the same problem with nwn... but, is it really impossible?

I would hate the faction system, as this brings hatred out-game... but asking a druid to ignore someone killing animals just because their 'rp styles doesn't match'? That hurts the main principles of a mmorpg, where everyone is part of the same world and then bound to rp with each other... I do believe a world with different styles and even enemies can be managed peacefully... you do have a large and participative gm team.

You know what would help avoid abuses? Scripting some way for the examine option not to show that 'level rating', like 'impossible', 'moderate' and so on... that gives you an idea of the power of other players without ever seing him in action. If an animal killer saw an 'easy' in the druid's screen, he certainly wouldn't bother respecting him... but if he didn't know.. well, maybe that druid was capable of ripping out his arms without so much as a blink.

He didn't cast it on ME, he trapped me in a place with it. And frankly, that was the most serious rp he could have shown...

It's not about evil guys... the possibility of Pvp is exactly to exclude the need for a evil guy. People get attacked, spanked, punched, robbed, raped, ripped everyday in real life. In a medieval age enviroment, law enforcement was loose and crime was even more common. Raiders, road-criminals and fugitives give depth and density to a scenary, and none of this is possible without Pvp... Including different races like goblins and bugbears roaming human streets? That was supposed to be a bloodshed.

It's not, for obvious reasons, funny to be robbed in a road or rapped in a dark corner of the street, but in a roleplay game, this all give traumas, spread some healthy hatred and anger throughout the population... it seeds base for more serious roleplaying...

Of course it must be kept to a minimum, but to nullify this... it's... weird.

I don't want a pvp server, but i do think such restricted pvp also restricts greatly rp and similarity to the chaos of life

I know how it works, i'm not asking this.. i'm suggesting how it could.
In my view it's disappointingly limiting, and result in some akward[sp?] situations like threats that cannot be put to work and points that can't be defended. Ad the few problems it brings are easilly enough handled by the number of gms that exists here.

And about the giving up thing... it's a bit unmotivating, isn't it? A perfectly peaceful and happy and harmless place... weird.

Weeblie, i've sent messages in the dm channels for some time now, and have never been answered.

This morning i was hunting badgers and there were two druids around. I wasnt with my companion, so they certainly didn't know i was a ranger. One of them sent a wall of fire trapping me inside, but i revealed myself and we talked peacefully, the other threatened me of death if i attacked his cubs again. In the meantime, more badgers spawned there, so I could have just attacked them, and it would be more than justifiable for him to kill me. I would see as a really bad rp if he kept threatening me after i've killed 20 badgers and would never mind dying by his hands if that meant the correct course...

Where i playied, the rule is that both sides need to agree on a to-death combat. So if a pk happens, and no one complains, it goes as normal. If one of them complains, but the other has a screenshot of him agreeing before combat [in the respective of a //tell there], nothings happens. If it had no rp reason and no agreement, it was a ban, plain and simple. If there was a reason but no agreement [like me killing those badgers but then saying 'no' to a death combat, something certainly ill-intended] the agressor [the one who said no] is punished by lack of rp. And it has gone all to well for years now... maybe you could try this here.

Development Journals and Discussion / Re: Seing the world
« on: July 28, 2006, 11:48:36 AM »
After more weeks within the town of Hlint, Arhliniel decided to look into internal matters. A woman around an immensily large building was ranting about stolen papers by a ratman, which souded easy enough for her to take care of: she should just kill the ratman, if needed be, and retrive the stolen documents.

Even though it wasn't going to be the largest of adventures, she needed easy tasks for the time being, to gather some experience and learn more on direct fighting. To achieve that though, she wasn't heading on the sewers by herself, so Arhliniel begun searching the city for young adventurers to help in her task: she didn't find that, but certainly found help.

When almost exhausted of looking, a man on white and blue robes asked her if she needed something, for she had run into him a couple of times now since he got to Hlint. Not seing much else to do, she stopped and explained her situation to him. By doing that she gad not only acquired a powerful ally, but also a future friend. Celgar was his name.

The man was a powerful priest of Lucinda, information she'd take some time to run across. He agreed going into the sewers with her, and showed time after time his spells were more than enough to take care of most rats, being that by direct offense or enchanting Arhliniel herself. In the end, there was no negotiation, and the ratman was killed, mission accomplished. Seing this meeting as a likely profitable coincidence, she told him about another of her tasks: the local postman had encharged her of delivering a letter to a man in a far away Fort. Not knowing much about roads that didn't cross her home forest, she knew she couldn't go alone, but was more than well protected with him.

He once again agreed, and they left. On the way, they stopped by a destroyed bloodpool, and Celgar told her something about the history of Blood and Ozy, how Blood defeated the dragons but was utterly destroyed. It was also the first time she sailed, and meeting the roughness of those rivers was an unforgettable experience. After that, they wen't through dangerous forests and valleys and, after delivering the letter, even ventured inside a crypt of a small town: Celgar's home town. Once again, swallowed by the darkness of dungeons, magery played an important role on her survival and victory, making her think about all the power the ancients of her clan denied themselves by shunning magery from their repertoires. After the adventure, there was a long stop for a rest in the local tavern, along with drinks and food.

While the hours passed, she learned more and more about the sad history of that man, his past fiances and how he tragically never managed to get married. Even though he possessed undeniable power, she pittied him for being so bound to it, but was happy for the deposit of trust by telling her so much. After some time, wanderlust struke her again, and they left to return to Hlint.

The road back was easy, but upon her arrival and their gooodbies, she was left the impression that maybe, there could be no power or victory without the touch of magic. From that day on she admires its users, and is immensily curious about them and their abilities, and questions her own role, and Khitarien's, on the protection of nature.

About pitch black... why does sometimes, the map resets? It would be great to keep in the map all areas you've been through...

PS: I was just asking a question and stating my decision which was recommended by the players themselves, no need to get offended.

I understand limits for evil and CN characters..
Now, a limitation that bothers me is pvp... wouldn't an agreement between both parts be enough for it to happen? I mean, what am I supposed to do, in the place of a ranger, if i see someopne just hacking the hell out of innocent animals without justification? Talk him out of it?

I do understand things happen, and that you can't control enviroment... but i've run into Rhynn, for example, four times in two days... and in ALL four times she went AFK without a warning in the middle of a conversation... am I so wrong to be upset about this? I do even ignore her now... but this never, ever happened to me while playing Ultima Online.. and now, four times in a weekend with the same person... frankly, i don't think I'll ever adjust to this. Is this so common to happen to you? Four real life emergencies in two days?

As a side note, if I had kids who were older than, say, 11, I'd probably actively encourage any interest they had in NWN or the roleplaying community as a whole, as I believe it encourages creativity and imagination.  (And if they expressed an interest in module design, so much the better! ;) )

Boy, i've been trying endlessly to convince people there are inumerous reasons of playing a computer game, but no one believes me... it's good to see some understand it and is avaaiable to pass it to the next generation.

And thanks for the thread link ^^

I appreciate the understanding, I really do. But I believe that there will be long years ahead before i can manage my time that well... I believe this because even now, I've been unnable to do things as often as i'd like, or for as much long... But still, i do waste a lot of time, so who knows.

For these and other reasons, I don't feel even the slightest will to be a parent... but as one of you [and a whole lot more people in my life] said, perspective slides, and maybe I'll want to have kids later... that, i believe, only time will tell. Thinking deeper, the fact that people can manage their schedule this well makes me admire them... It's good to see it's possible.

For now, I'm happy this worked out, and will take the advice to think more about things before posting... and hope this doesn't happen again.

PS: Just as a side note, where do i request character deletion? [Please, don't delete it before i post it there]

Personally, I don't plan to play any of this should i get myself three kids and a compromised life, really. This is the kind of time-spending fun which requires a great deal of attention and effort which, for obvious reasons, can't be handled when you're 30, is married, have children and work out. Suddenly, i expected people who don't have much to do with their lives to be playing here, and i stumbled upon a dozen married people, and that scares me, since i don't play to take my life virtual at that age.

At any rate, i respect people's decisions, primarily because i know not what decisions will I make at this age, so I can't blame any of you. All i'm asking now then, is that you plan before playing. What's that? Let's go for an example:

I do have a mother and six mess-with-everything cats, so I do have things to do... so, before sitting here and clicking nwn's icon, i do every single thing i have to before playing, so i won't have to stop in the middle of the rp... I ask my mother what she needs, take care of immediate situations, sit, and screw the world because, if she asks something of me while i'm here, i'm sorry, but i warned her i'd not be avaiable.

Suddenly i think i take this more seriously than most others, but people around me on UO used to do the same. Since they're younger, it's all understandable. So, my present urge is... your kid stuck a knife in it's belly? You dog just got screwed by the electrical fence? That's all right to me, but don't go afk if it isn't something important... and most people *will* agree with me when i say being hungry is NOT an immediate emergency.. you can still finish the rp situation, go away, log out, and eat at peace on your table enjoying some time together with family...

If a person was to fall asleep in a bench, i'd notice it in real life, 'cause she'd has her eyes closed and would have her head pending in some direction... what would certainly make me NOT speak with her... I've heard more than a few times people saying 'oh, she likes to daydream'... come on, does everyone have alzheimer in the game? That's not, IMHO, a good excuse whatsoever.

Talan, i hadn't thought of that, but it happened to me too... i mean, find an rp excuse to log off, not just some occ warning someone...

and Diamond, franckly, there's everything wrong with that... put your char somewhere people will probably not find... it's not like you're gonna DIE if you take one or two minutes longer before eating or drinking...

Dorganath, for you, i'm sorry i took this as granted, but you gotta agree with me... someone who is frequently away in the middle of rp actions or crowded areas deserve a warning... it's not someone who takes rp any serious if he doesn't fix this attitude..

More to the point, as Dorg says above, the problem is obviated by saying "*describes the object in great detail* //look at it now."

That would do it, for RP purposes.

Exactly.. this isn't much to ask. I'd still rather listen to an rp explanation.. the deeper, the better. But your suggestion is way better than pressing the identify button already...

And the afk complaint goes for people in the middle fo the action. Whoever has been to hlint for some time, noticed there's a corner, right in front of the bank, where people usually gather. A guy was sitting in one of those benches, afk. I talked to him soon praying no one was listening, because he simply ignored me. And yes, i wasn't being a pest, i knew him from before...
