Forum stars - what do they mean?

Beneath my forum avatar I get various coloured stars. Leanthar has his own his galaxy of them.

Now I assume that the colours represent different forums posted in, but why does the number and colour of stars change every now and then?  I appear to be down to a lonely red star now while the other day I had a merry multi-coloured constellation. Whats it all about?

(edit--in other words, you now have a 160 star plus a 10 star for 170 posts, where before you hit 160, it was made of up of more smaller ones...or something)
