The Letters of Calvin Norseman

// It's packaged with some dried goods, dried fruits, a blank
// mahogany notebook bound by Freldo himself, quill, ink and
// some fashionable clothing for a boy his age in Spellgaurd.

Dear Calvin,

I'm Freldo, a friend to your parents, your mother Treana and your grandmother Caniel. I hope you remember me despite not having seen you for a while, I used to sing for you when you were a boy and still lived in Prantz.

I know it's been a while and I'm really sorry I didn't write sooner but grown ups, especially me, get caught up in our own things and end up disappointing those that we love.

I'm writing to know how you've been! So how have you been? Learning the arcane arts and having fun with a sword, like your dad Cole, or you've picked up the katana and started swing for the fences like mom Addison? That is, I hope you've taken after both of them, they were both wonderful folks and I still love them both dearly. If you've taken a different path, I hope you can tell me about it.

I met your mother Treana the other day and she was very worried about you, in fact the last time I saw her so upset over something was a little after you were born. I know you know how upset she gets, she even gets cranky and stale, but I'll let you in on a secret - she's always been like that and that's what makes her so special to me. She's a good woman despite her ways, she loves you as the son doesn't have and wants only the best for you but doesn't know how to express it very well.

Anyway, if you need anything, please let me know and I'll see what I can do.

Your friend,
Freldo

PS. I would have sent you a pie but it's a bit delicate to be delivered by bird mail so if you ever want a nice pie, let me know and I'll take it to you.

// the following is written in a childish hand with differing text sizes throughout the page and appears to possibly be tear stained//

Dear Freldo,

Thank you for your letter and fancy notebook. I apalagize for not clearlee rememburing who you are but am glad to get your mail.

I hate my school in spelgard. I don't even think my fake mom told my grnadmother where I am, so if you can get word to her I know she will come and rescue me from here.

I wish I had some real parents instead of my fake mom. She does not care about me and left me here in school so she can do what she wants without caring about me. I hate my school in spelgard.

Please tell grandma Caneel to come soon so she can come and take me back to Prentz.

I do not like magiks very much but I do like playing with some kids here that aren't to mean to me. I just want to come home. I like to listen to songs. Last week I snuck out of schoool and sat out side of the tavurn listning to the music inside. The headmastar beat me with a stick when they found me and made me come back to school. Tell grandma I need her to get me.

Please tell me more about my real parents. I am sorry they died when I was a baby and left me.

Calvin.

Good riddance Spellgard.  I won't be coming back here anytime soon.

-----

Spent a good week travelling Westward towards Port Hempstead.  Freldo has a place there and he told me to look him up sometime in the future.  No better time than the present.

-----

Met a nice elven lass by the name of Drexia.  Says she's a monk of some order.  Pretty.  Can say I don't have much tact with the ladies.  She left me on a real cold note, so don't think she'll speak to me again.  Pretty direct when she came down to the rejection.  She was right, school should have taught me about girls.  Thanks for nothing Spellgard.

-----

Stranger approached me outside an inn and brought me inside.  Figured he was needing some talent for a job.  Instead he gave me a ring that has the imprint of a panther on it ... and my name inside.  It came with a riddle too.  Says that I need to go to Leringard, find a gypsy and have my cards read, just like my father.  The fellow was wearing a ring just like the one he gave to me, so I hope it's not some sort of cult.  It has peaked my curiosity though and I need to find the gypsy.  The only thing he wrote on the paper was Arms.  Will have to figure that one out on my own.  I'll ask around.

Drexia hates me.  Either she doesn't appreciate my wit and charm -- or she does not like men.  Don't see her much anyway, so perhaps my heart led me astray.

-----

Grandma told me to go off and be a farmer.  I am thinking that she does not want me to adventure like my mother and father.  Her methods of protecting me are questionable at best.  I can see through her trickery most of the time.  I need to be careful with her because I haven't fully forgotten my training in youth in the magical arts.  She is an enchantress and all enchantresses must be treated cautiously so they cannot control your mind.  The only thing I accomplished on the farm was poking bales of hay with my sword.

-----

Met a new lass named Amireana.  Just saying her name gives me chills.  She's beautiful, tall, and goes away for long periods of time -- she's nearly perfect.  Promised to tell me before she goes away again.  Taking her to mom's wedding reception if she ever schedules it.

-----

Mom got remarried... wait.  Mom got married.  My family structure is very strange.  She wouldn't invite me to the wedding because of some old custom.  It makes me resent her more than before.  She is getting old, so I have to be nicer to her in the future before she dies.

-----

I have been working on my rapier skills at the arena.  Amireana is also a specialist in the art.  Perhaps we may duel together and work on our skills as a pair.  We need a name for ourselves if we travel as a pair, working together.  I'll let her think about that, as she is more creative.

-----

Kobalds outside of Hempstead are made of a strange alloy.  The alloy is slick, causing my blade to slide off their hides at each swing.  I find only a direct hit works well against their cunning tactics.  They are extremely hard to hit as they dart about.  In the future, I will focus my skills on hitting things precisely without wavering in the path of my blade.

-----

Calvin
