How to play with a broken arm
« on: February 19, 2010, 06:00:23 PM »
Yep, that is the question.  My left arm from shoulder to fingertips is in a cast.  Sooooo Layo buddies......give me your best idea's on how to get into the game.  So far my only thought is to Park Peanut and just RP with her while pecking the keyboard with my right hand.

//Wow!  Sorry about the arm!  Get better soon.

That is a GREAT idea.  She could even clean the fish caught on it.  He would really like THAT.

And thanks....I will never try to rescue a cat from the roof of my barn ever again!   Score : Cat 9  Me 0

I'd say if you have the possibility to have your arm straight and supported by something, then you should be able. Typing would be the most difficult thing, but other wise, you can pretty much do everything with the mouse.

Storold wouldn't mind a halfling trying to drive him nuts at his bench... Although he would advise her not to use public property for cleaning fish on..

Edit... And of course get well soon :)

I had that then I dislocated my shoulder a few years ago and was in a brace for 4 weeks.

[LIST=1]
  • Don't go dungeon crawling, it'll get you killed because you're not used to doing everything with one hand
  • Listen to the wrist of the right arm. It'll be hovering over the keyboard a lot because it now has to do everything. Don't want to get RSI/carpal tunnel syndrome or some other nasty wrist/finger/elbow affliction because you're over using it.
  • Read everything on LORE ;) will keep you busy for a bit.
  • Remap your keys so that it works better from a right-hand only perspective
That's about it! Hope your recovery will be swift.

It would be almost impossible to straighten my arm since it is in a hard cast. I am trying a couple of positions to see if anything works.  But with one hand only to type with I am getting about 20 words per minute.

I'm sure if you do play there'll be some nice people around who'll be patient with your typing. :)

And I hope it gets better soon :)

I wish there were WASD foot pedals for first person shooters.  In any case, dont attempt to play using it until you get your doctor's ok.  When I had surgery on my left hand, I found myself playing tons of Civ 4, Tex Murphy and oldschool Sierra adventure games as they weren't time sensitive.  Hope your arm gets better, make sure your getting some calcium and vitamin D.

Get a comfy chair, one of those sofa-chairs, if you know what I mean. Then just place the keyboard on your lap so that you have WSAD keys under your fingers, and take a stool, put the mousepad on it and use the mouse from it, place the stool at next to your thigh.
Always helps if you can reallocate the monitor to give you a good angle to look at it, and the footstools are a brilliant example of humane genius, have one for your legs.

I love it!  With a combination of this and some pillows it just might work.  And patience WILL be needed :)

This is not going to work unfortunately.   I have no movement in my thumb or wrist and I can't rotate my arm in suh a way to allow my 3 middle fingers to hit the awsd keys.  Thanks for all the sugestions.  I WILL be able to park myself and emote :)

That 20 with one hand is better then my 10 to 15 with two good hands.  Lets not even get in to the spelling or my gramer...  It is so bad, I dont even know how I got throw my schooling.  I will come visit you if you just want to do the rp thing.
