The problem with pies (and bread)
« on: October 01, 2010, 09:47:39 AM »
The pricing on pies ranges from 300 to 1500 true per pie and loaf of bread costs 100. My first thoughts is at those prices was how do the masses afford to eat? Then I thought well they make their own bread and pies, but that thought was followed by: There is no way they would eat the pies and bread they make they would sell them to adventurers and buy mansions :)

No, they're not prices that reflect what commoners would pay, and this has come up before I'm pretty sure.

They're reflective, however, of our single-currency system in NWN (which also doesn't reflect the reality of the situation) and the general inflation involved with the crafting system in general. The same can be said of the crafted drinks as well.

Very true on the drinks. So those prices should only reflect PC to PC purchasing but not, say in quest tavern prices.

Some folks just make the pies then give them away freely.  The ingredients are not really hard to come by.  Besides, from what I have seen and heard, they are also a great way to say thanks and rp with (Especially with Halflings ;)

Well quest situations are at the GM's discretion, and since a couple of True might well buy a round of drinks for the entire inn, a GM is likely to stay with the PC pricing.

Clear as mud?

Certain ingredients are easy to come by, others aren't.. for example, if your character can't hide/invisible/great sanctuary, it can be tough gathering raw materials. Take pecan, the only place I know if is located in Firesteep... not exactly the type of places that most players can freely go by themselves. Furthermore, it's quite a travel to get there. A simpler example would be getting sage. A few screen away from Haven but is surrounded by scorpions. Therefore, it depends on the raw materials that you're gathering.

Cooking is time consuming as well.. in order to make any type of pies, you'll need: 1 wheat flour (3 kernel = 1 flour), 1 corn oil (2 kernel = 1 meal,  4 corn meal = 1 oil), 1 sugar (10gp at Port Hempstead), 1 salt (goblin cave or 10gp), and whatever the required amount fruits/nuts, i.e. 8 pecans > 1 pecan pie.

So my point is, prices on what we make shouldn't reflect tavern prices. If that's the case, I rather go buy the pies/breads from the tavern vs making my own. :)

Pecans can be found in closer and less dangerous places, just so you know.

It kind of weirdly balances out when you also consider the difficulty in purchasing any kind of perishable food save for what is immediately local. PCs buy and sell anything everywhere regardless of the season or how long it has been in their backpack. NPCs pick apples or blackberries at certain times of the year, sell what they can at the local market, perhaps preserve a chunk and give some to the pigs.

It's actually See Invisibility that they spawn in with sometimes, but same effect.

And no hints...and we also discourage posting CNR locations on the forums. *winks*

I'm sure someone knows though....find out in-character. It's more fun that way.

Silly me, I remember where the easy ones are at now. Daniel, The Protector, took us there several times, and I took a semi-new player there yesterday to touch the point of interest flag. Layo is big, i love it!! :D

Bread, Pie, Roasts and ales are all free if you happen to know a brownie Prunillite!  Just not in bulk... unless you're willing to bring Annie the ingredients. ;)
