Some advice needed.
« on: April 21, 2006, 05:55:34 AM »
I'm in the process of writing the bio of a human cleric of Shindaleria.
  Now i've completed most of the bio, but i've hit a standstill for you see, I can't find a reason or way for him to have actually become a cleric of Shindaleria. I assume that you would need to be taught the ways of being a cleric by another cleric of Shindaleria.
  Finding a temple on land would be impossible as quoted here from the deities page; "Shindaleria has no actual temples, but numerous underwater shrines exist"
  "Clerics of Shindaleria often spend most of their time in the sea", and from what this says I think that the clerics spend most of their time underwater, and only venture above water for a really important reason, or for the first week of Junar in which they go about collecting beautiful objects and treasures to giving them to the mother ocean as a gift.
  It's due to this that i'm finding it difficult to explain a way in which he was taught the ways of being a cleric of Shindaleria. So far i've explained that everything his learnt about her is through his life as a sailor, and what his heard from the other sailors and people he talks to when he docks.
  Anyone have any suggestions on how I could get around this?
  I've searched the forums for other human's who have been clerics of Shindaleria, but their bio's seem to conflict with what is said in the deities page.

  Thanks in advance.

Technically, the statement that there are no actual temples may be out of date, as I can think of two locations off the top of my head, one on the West server and one on the Central server.  Clerics of Shindaleria may typically remain in the water, but due to the events of the Fate of Carocsa quest line, a good number were driven out of their marine homes (and thus opened up the Sea Elf race to be PC-playable).  Most human sailors follow the Sea Hag (Mist) instead of being enlightened (so life as a human cleric of Shindaleria would not be all that popular among your character's sailor fellows), though you might use the "seeking a different path from the norm" ideal as a character hook.  If your history involved spending time with the elven seafarers here and there, your character will probably have seen much more favorable interaction.

There is one temple of shindeleria on the surface (at least only 1 that is acctually represented IG.)  And there are many underwater, though the difference between a temple and a shrine seems largely semantic to me.

temple = big shrine?

shrine
  n : a place of worship hallowed by association with some sacred thing or person v : enclose in a shrine; "the saint's bones were enshrined in the cathedral"
Temple n: A building dedicated to religious ceremonies or worship. |
So both are places of worship, but shrines are associated with relics in there or something, so a special kind of temple.
