    Language use?
    « on: April 21, 2006, 11:14:34 PM »
Greetings all.. I am new to Layonara and just submitted my character submission. However I hear of the language use hear. How does it work? For anyone that has played on Arelith is it the same.. where you just type something in and it appears as scrambled garb to some1 who does not have that ear? Would appreciate if someone would explain.

    Thanks in advance ;P

First, please don't be so impatient. 22 minutes is not that long of a wait, and while we have lots of helpful people here, both players and GMs, we're not always available to pounce on answers to questions. I'd add also that you asked this question during the very early morning/late night US times, and generally there just aren't a lot of people on at such times...and there are currently about 20-some people involved in a plot quest at the moment.
Now, regarding the languages...each language has an "ear" item that when activated allows the speaker to speak in an alternate language and to understand said language when spoken.
The means of use can come in two forms, one of which is given to you in messages when you actually use the ear in-game, that being typing
        /dm [Words to translate]
in the chat box. There is also an extensive use of parsed voice commands that work for things like emotes, dicebag functions and alternate languages. You can get help in-game for these things by typing *help* in the chat box.

of note, the language ear system, as well as many others, are currently being defined in LORE under Game Systems.  Soon enough you'll be able to go there to read up on any one of the unique aspects of Layonara.

Currently, though, you can check out all of the classes, feats, spells, etc that you might want to check out for your character on LORE, so I suggest ItalianDDog, you might want to spend some time there.

Never played on Arelith, but yes, if somebody speaks in elven and you do not have the elven language year you will see a collection of elven words that you can not understand. Now if somebody speaks animal and you don't have that ear, you will see something like '''''' ''' '' ''''' ''' ''''', for each language it's different.

      Hope this helped.
