Question About Familiars
« on: June 04, 2008, 06:33:29 PM »
Here's a question for the experts that's been bugging me for a few days: what is the expected lifespan of a familiar?

Are familiars granted longer than normal lives through their bonds to their masters and mistresses? And if so, how much longer? Will the familiar ever die of old age before the sorceress/sorcerer/wizard/mage? Is the familiar/magic user bond ever broken through anything other than the death of one or the other?

And while we're on the subject, what exactly happens to the familiar when it dies? Mechanically, there's a period of time where you cannot summon it, and you also take a con penalty. I assume the con penalty represents pain and the weakness that results from the trauma of losing something that is bonded to you ... but it comes back eventually, right? Do familiars use bindstones? Are they bound through their magic masters and mistresses?

Just some idle musings to pass the time, and keep already busy minds even busier. Hopefully you will all indulge my rambling thoughts and questions. :)

If the familiar has a shorter lifespan than the master, it ceases aging at its normal rate and instead ages at the standard rate for the master. If dismissed, it resumes its normal rate of aging but suffers no immediate ill effects. If the familiar has a longer lifespan that the master, it continues aging at its normal rate.

Pseudo answers a gamemaster question ... what's next? It's one of the signs of the apocalypse.
