To reply to the very first post.....  yes, I, in REAL LIFE, do actually run (well, technically, jog) from place to place.  Unless I actually want to absorb the sights, I don't have time to waste walking.  So I jog.  Oddly enough, I think Cole (my character)  walks more than I do.  Luckily, since he's not an elf, mechanically, I can set him to 'detect mode' which forces him to walk as long as he's in it, and he kicks out of the mode as soon as he attacks.  Poor elves are on auto detect and half to use the shift-click method unless they've figured out some other ingenious method to walk without holding down a button.

Of course, maybe I'm the exception to the rule... any other 'joggers' out there?

More like a runner. Sort of a habit now after track. I need to go somewhere quickly, I run. Unless I am carrying too much, in which case I walk.

For the most part, my characters walk when other people are around. Makes more sense. He runs when tryingget somewhere fast IC or when no one else is around. Although there was the one case where he ran because he wanted a work out. *shrugs* And yeah, detect mode is a blessing and elves are annoying to play because they don't have it.

just to note, if your elf tends to wear metal armors and is not a rogue or anything and you wish to walk, you can pretty safly turn on stelth mode as the heavy armor will hurt your hide skill enough that you wont hide from anyone successfully, of course this doesn't tend to work if your character is an elvish rogue or other class that tends to add points to hide/MS

Most people's Hide/MS aren't high enough, even without armor, to be hidden when five feet from another character, in broad daylight.

So Stealth works as well as Detect.

I coded my letter "Z" for walk mode so I dont have to use detect or hide/ms mode unless needed

Personally I prefere to walk in town because otherwise I feel silly, yes I even feel silly if I run in a game I have too many issues. lol

Oh and I egnore all those who I consider powergamers. My definition of powergamers extends to people who run all the time, never close doors, do not carry clothes instead of wearing that same piece of armor so they can have an extra few minutes incase they get attacked, and those who dont take of helmets when they walk inside houses, or have weapons drawn constantly even on roads they know perfectly wel have no spawns on them.

That or I will constantly grill your charecter in game about there behavior :)

I thought of a way to make people walk in towns...

a giant cataclysm comes from the heavens, making every town a swamp.

sounds pleasant, huh?  BUT everyone would be walking!!!

...but...  I run 'in town' in real life...  so, what's so off about chracters in a game running in town?  I jog through the mall, for heavens sake...  maybe I'm just always in a hurry...  that is, always late...  =P

To walk I normally turn on detect mode, or hold down shift, whatever is most convenient at the time. :)

although if your an elf this is not an option, though most cleric or fighter types you could just turn on stealth mode and everyone will see you just fine, due to your low hide/MS skills, or, you can go to the game options and map a walk key, i currently have the "Y" key on my keyboard marked to walk forward, and the final option is to hold shift and click somewhere

Actually you don't want everyone that is in town stuck in a walking mode.  For instance . .lets say . . . Demons attack within the town.  How fast would you like others to come give you a hand?  Just a thought.

I run, but then again, there's a lot of times where I seem to warp (mosly backwards). Hell, I've warped to the wrong end of a map while everybody else appeared on the appropriate side of the map (entering Fort Hope...I was already at the other end). That was odd. Worse yet, I left Hlint to go to Haven but appeared somewhere in Sielwood once. So, the way I figure it, when I'm running, I'm actually walking as the system is making corrections for me.  :p

Strange...go from the outskirts of Port Hamshire, east, and feel your mind be boggled when you appear in the Blood Desert. That's a hell of a portal. Obviously, I'm just being silly pointing out this huge gap within the continent but it's also silly trying to tell people to walk. In the end it's a game and people should feel free to roleplay but, as well, get somewhere, to do their roleplaying.

      That "warping" is server lag.

      Server lag happens.

My point is, I find it frustrating, on what is supposedly a high-RP world, that everyone runs everywhere.
DUDE!! Just take one freaking look at all the background info on the forums, in Lore and in the Players handbook then have a cold glass of water, get over yourself and like take a chill pill or something! I mean really. People who are in a hurry run, EVEN in RL. So umless Orth or someone makes a 'Power walk" animation or makes town walk only I for one will run if I feel like it tyvm :P

P.s Big Arnie and the gang Ran everywhere in Conan the Destroyer just to throw that out there like lol.

Can I add, Run jump skip hop fly whats the difarance in RP.
Houses dont canter, gaints move as fast as brownis, its the code and thats all.
A portel is a click away, I think it makes no difarance if you run to RP.
We all go around with tons for kit and 1000s of gold coins you should ask
"why do we move at all?."

All this said, some people talk about mapping characters to the walk and run actions...I haven't figured out how to do that, can someone tell me how you do these mappings?

On yer quick slot or threw a hot key, Stranzini?

Personally both my PC enjoy a great deal running over PCs that think the middle of the road is an ideal place to have a chat, especialy when riding my horse heh heh.
Roads whether in towns or out are to go from A to B not chat in the middle of.
Apart from that if I'm running I have a good reason to do so, Stempest, so before saying it isn't RP to do so, well be sure ;)
