Ok I am dragging out my soapbox so beware of the rant.  I am mad right now and have to get this off my chest.

I got a call this morning from a customer that said no one can log into the server.  Email was down too.  After several minutes on the phone I decided that I had to go in.  So I walk in and find the server, a windows 2000 DC (I know I know, windows is a bad OS) has had its NIC set to DHCP instead of its static address.  I tell the customer that someone changed it and once I added the IP back then the server would be fine.  So I did.  The server was not fine.

I rebooted and it took ages to come back up.  After some time of troubleshooting I found several system services set to disabled.  Obviously not a good thing.  So I checked the logs.  It should have caught someone  right?  Not if said person deleted the logs!

Now, it was my own fault for leave the terminal services port open on the firewall, but the customer wanted it open for his own use.  I should have pushed harder to get him to use the VPN.  My fault.

I believe after several reboots after setting the services back to automatic that the server is back to normal.  I installed some watcher services to alert me if the services are tampered with again.

I thought it ended there.  I was wrong.  I got a phone call from one of the other guys I work with and what was he dealing with?  The exact same situation on another customer's server.  On top of services being disabled, the printers were deleted, the backup software was deleted and the server was shut down.  

Now tonight, I was trying to do some things on Layo with someone I havent seen in a long time and what happens?  I get called away to mess with this server.  I think I busted him this time though.  He thought he was very clever in deleting his tracks but what has forgotten is that terminal services lists your IP address and machine name.  Idiot.

I am 99% sure I know who it is too.

So, as the title says, have respect when you leave a job and dont do something that you might regret later.  Burnt bridges can come back and bite you.

I dont know much about computer ( My daughter has to tell me what to do on it, and she is 12.  So that proves how much I know about them).  It sounds like a lot of time and work.  Sorry to hear that people can not respect other peoples work..

I have always viewed this behaviour of malicious tampering with some elses computers/PC/Severs/Network as being the same as walking into someone elses house, emptying a few closets, switching off the refrigerator and turning on the TV at full volume. If you were to do this, even if you thought it a joke, then the law in most countries would consider you a criminal and most likely seek to get you charged with breaking and entering, criminal damage and burglery. The most likely punishment is a custodial sentence. So why do people think they can do it to another persons/companies computer systems? It is annoying, and having had it happen where I work, very frustrating. In my view these so called hackers are just petty criminals.

I hope you are able to catch the perpetrator, and deal with them, or report them to an appropiate authority.

Yeah I suspect it is a former employee.  I have no specific proof though.  Yet.  Still doing some investigation.  

What is even more silly is that the guy is soliciting our customers.  He signed a non-compete agreement that in no uncertain terms prohibits him from doing that.  So, whether it was him or not who messed with the servers, he is getting smacked with the legal stick already.  

I am continuously amazed at what some people will do.
