Question about camping.
«
on:

"Camping is not allowed in Layonara. Its a bannable offense, but that usually happens if you are asked several times not to do so.
Camping a boss area for the XP from it is wrong... in no way can you RP this. Plus its nothing but bad taste.
Camping CNR materials is okay, as long as it doesnt last over like 30 min, and you don't weigh yourself down silly, like 500 lbs when you can only carry 150.....
GM's have the right to drop whatever monster they want at anytime, and trust me, theyll drop a hydra or two on you if ya get caught."
This is a qoute from the rules about camping, but I have a query...
Not to be a snob or anything, but I was hunting around Broken Forest just so I can get a good spawn of undead to get a boost in cash. I tried several times on different occassions and the same set of players were there that cleared out the forest.
This lasted for about...45mins-60 mins, going back after long breaks.
I also think I had a kill steal, wasn't too sure as it happened soo quickly but a monster did fall there was a hit in there. It was by a person who quickly ran by, hit and ran off. I questioned about it to see if it was an attempt or anything - but he said that he thought I needed help, when do I need help when me and my allies were killing 2 zombies which were left?
This person also addmitted to staying in an area for 1 or 3 hours just to collect coins and helping someone to level...Isnt this against the rules?
But how long is camping defined?
Thanks, Edd.

Staying in the same area for hours, getting gold/XP sounds definitively like camping for me. And, yes, camping is against the rules. Sadly, it's quite common, I think...
I wouldn't be too bothered by a single "kill steal", though. A lot of people try only to be helpful, after all. Allei (my own character), for example, would definitively do it if she saw you with "injured" or less HP...

If something like that is happening you can let a GM know about it. If none are on you can always get one on the NWN IRC channel.

Yes, that is against the rules as it is camping. There is no reason (RP reason unless on a GM run quest) to cycle between a couple of areas (or even 1 area as it stated there) for 1-3 hours.
With that said...I am fully aware we are all here to have fun and combat is a large part of that--but lets not camp an area, spread out see the rest of the world, meet new people.

just curious about my own activities. I was trying to get down into the lower levels of the goblin red fang cave to get some copper, but I always ran into heavy resistance. I would get down to badly wounded, then I would rest and lick my wounds (not literally) and continue on. I had to do this 3 times I think, I did lose track of time but I would say I was there for barely over an hour.
I tried to make the rest areas easily defendable for RP reasons, and did talk a bit (to myself). Was what I did considered camping?

Camping is in my definition staying in an area with the intention of spawning creatures. If you reach one of the spawns in the broken forest and nothing happens and you just wait for it you're definatly camping, if you do a full circle cleaning out the entire forest and then want to continue to Fort Hope and trigger one of the spawns again then it isn't camping.
The in the camping example the players use their OOC knowledge telling them that something will spawn there eventually. In the secong example the players OOC know that the undead might spawn again, but they can't do anything but fight them to get further.
So if you're forced by game mecanics to fight a spawn twice it isn't camping but it is if you use game mecanics to fight a spawn twice. And staying in an area and just going in circles viping out all the spawns again and again is surely abusing game mecanics.
As for the killsteal, I don't really bother about killsteals and Storold usually pops out of invisibility if he sees someone fighting and try to help the best he can. I don't think that is killstealing and really all the players Storold helps is a few xp which really shouldn't matter at all IC.

Is it considered camping if you go into the goblin cave to mine copper and it takes a bit to mine all the areas and it will if ye get lucky with all the areas
and as your coming out a few deposits respawn as your headingo out and you mine it.
I tend tend to rp to my ox that Zandor named Stone that it must be me lucky day and one of the cave walls must have caved if from all the mining and it showed some more copper
most of the time i say something like " well look at that Stone it must be are lucky day a cave in must have opened up some more veins of copper fer us te mine time te pull out me pick" and I would go and mine the copper then leave.
//I know I know rp talking to an Ox but thank about it im a dwarf in a mine with just me ox, the dead gobbos that me and Stone just got done killing(yes my ox has bashed him a few gobbos down there) and me mining to do he has to talk to some one:)

with layo having soooo many areas in which to explore seems funny that you simply HAD to repeatedly return to that particular area. they must have good pie there !?

I think common sense is the key here...
1 or 2 "wipes" of broken forest? Nope... Don't think that as camping.
10 "wipes" of broken forest? Surely camping!

Yes. Threads like these generally bring up a host of "well this one time I... but I wasn't..." posts; most of them fairly normal situations, some not. These aren't meant to accuse the mass population of doing it, just a clear point out of "Hey, I saw this specific incident, that's not cool, right?" The people doing it usually know who they are, because you just can't really roleplay sitting in the same place for hours, fighting off the constantly respawning enemies.

With this server, there really is no reason to camp. The place is so huge and most of the areas are balanced to nearly the same level, you could instead go on a single "Warpath" that's easily last 45mins-1 hour. A warpath is where you designate a start point, gather the party and march through the most challenging, treacherous path on the way to an end point, say Hlint through sielwood, through the broken forest, to Hope, then past the griffons and to Port Hampshire. Then when you get there, you take a 5 minute breaks for poopies afk and smokes, do all your banking and pick a new destination... say, Hampshire to Uligrid in Berhagen, or through the High Forrest all the way back the back-route to Hlint.
You'll be fighting far more beasties on a warpath nonstop, and much better, you will build a working knowledge of trade and shipping routes. Also, helping crafters attain their goods is plausable RP, while camping in the same handful of areas is not. Find a dwarf who NEEDS iron, the song of Dorand on his tongue and help him slay ogres as he fills his packs full of ore. You'll find it much more entertaining when there's a "prize" at the end of the battle frenzy, vs. killing for its own sake.
A list of things more entertaining that Broken Forrest Zombies...
-Renders
-Giants
-Ogres
-Werewolves
-Used Carraige Salesmen
-Badgers
-Acacea
-watching 5th lvl wizards blow themselves up with their 1st fireball

You go back later. Go RP or tacke some other quest or go gather other resources...anything but sitting around waiting for them to respawn.

the problem is that at lower Character's level you haven't much opportunity to go somewhere and do something different because you are too weak... i will go deep into caves insted of waiting for ears if i could but it would be a suicide. so i have to travel between crypts and woods untill i will be stronger
to be honest i chat a lot so it isnt a problem for me but anyway if there isnt any other players i have nothin to do between respawns...

Believe me, I'm well aware of the limitations of low-level characters. I still have one, in fact. Again..RP, or get together with a group of people to go exploring. There are always alternatives to camping.

Hm... Well, Layo isn't meant to be solo-ed, after all...
So... Erh... the only solution is really... Stay in Hlint until someone else drops in (you can browse the forum/chat on IRC in the meanwhile, if you are playing in window mode).

look for GM quests on the calander, there are a couple that are meant for low levels. And to my knowledge they are a good source of friends, jink, and experience.

I really have no problems with somebody fighting in an area for 20-30 minutes--after that it is camping though. And yes, low levels are limited and we are aware of that as well...
