    Bow questions
    « on: May 09, 2006, 04:32:42 PM »
For all the bow experts out there:

I've seen that a compound bow has Massive Criticals: +1d6 damage compared to a regular bow.  Can anyone put in plain language what this means?

The other thing I've seen is a Mighty +1/2/3.  What is this?  What does it do?  Can anyone use one?

    Thanks!

Mighty (+x) means that you add your strength modifier to the bow damage as you would any melee weapon. x is mearly the maximum strength modifier you can add. So if you had a +3 strength modifier and you used a might +1 bow, you would only add +1 to the damage.

As for the massive criticals, I do not know, but I could make a guess. I assume it means the bow does an addition +1d6 damage when you get a critical (a natural 20) ON TOP of the bow's statndard x3 damage.

      Both of these are correct.

Can additional parts be added to an existing bow to make it compound?

Compound bows can only be made by wood crafters with enough skill. It requires compound cams to be added to an existing bow.
Compound bow parts (mighty) can be added by any person, similiar to adding enchantment rods to a weapon.

So I am confused.  Adding the compound cams makes it a compound bow, what does compound bo parts do (besides add mighty)?  Can both be added to an existing bow?

A compound bow, which is made by adding cams to an existing bow by a woodcrafter, adds Extra Range Damage: Piercing; Massive Criticals: 1d6 Damage

The Bow parts, which adds the Mighty to it, can be put on an existing crossbow, regular bow, or a compound bow by anyone. Like Aragwen said, it is similiar to adding enchantment rods to a weapon.

Isn't one of them acctually called a "Composite Bow" to eliminate this type of confusion?

        So if might sum up:

A compound bow is made using compound bow cams and a bow by an experienced woodcrafter.  It adds an additional +1d6 damage above the rest of the damage on a critical.

A Bow Part of Strength +x is made (by a tinkerer?) and can be put on any bow (even crossbows?) by anyone of an appropriate level to do so.  It allows the strength bonus of a bow user to be added to the damage done by the bow, assuming you have a strength bonus of at least the mighty number.  This is listed as a Mighty +x in the description.

        To complete my understanding:

Is the mighty +x damage added to the base damage, so that it is multiplied by a critical?
If I have a bow with a Mighty +3 but my bonus is +1, can I still use it?  (I envision this as being like a bow with a very high pull strength; if I'm not strong enough to pull it, I won't be able to use it)
How does adding the Mighty +x change the level requirement of the bow?

Mighty, in PnP DnD and in common sense cannot be added to a crossbow. I'd assume Layonara doesn't allow you to add it to a crossbow either. I mean, come on, the damage from a crossbow isn't dictated by how hard you can pull the release trigger :)
