Why is OOC in group so frowned upon? However brief it may be.

Because it ruins the immersion of the role play going on.  If you need to say something OOC to a character the best way is to do a tell.

OOC things that have no bearing on the game break immersion for players around you.
OOC things that constitutes knowledge your character would not have, such as the name of someone you've never met, some bit of game/plot/story info or whatever is just bad form. Also bad form is // Wow these things give major XP!!!!!
One thing to keep in mind also is that GMs see all party channel communications. When you're off adventuring with a group and a GM is running a quest, it's very disruptive when the group gets into a discussion about // laagggggggg.
If you have to do OOC, do it in tells. If you have to say something to your party, keep it brief and relevant, such as:
// Gotta log out, sorry  // brb // bio

    Depends on situation really.

Generally, OOC talk is one of the best RP killers:

A: Come and look here. What do you think these are for runes?
B: *studies them for a while* Hm... I think I've seen them before. *picks out a book*
C: // What is the AB for queen spiders?

And OOC talk should be avoided in party chat if possible.

DMs use that channel for quests. I bet it's already hard to follow the quest-party's conversation if a few other parties are active talking at the same time. Throwing in OOC-talk doesn't make things better.

    Edit: Aww! Too slow!

ok the part about DM's sharing the group channel explains it. Should we generally try and avoid the group channel even when in a large group? I typically prefer the group channel when in a large group.

      From the FAQ:
      Q: What is Party Chat?
A: Party Chat is one of the other forms of communication in NWN. Everything your character says in the party chat channel is seen by all characters in your party. However, please bear in mind that if one party member is in another area, you should RP that he/she did not hear it as he/she is too far away. Please do not try to circumvent this by, for example, talking into a walkie-talkie-stone. Party chat can be seen by all players in your party, as well as by all GMs that are online. Party chat should be in-character talk, so please refrain from OOC talk.

ROFL, where can I get these walkie-talkie stones, and how much do they cost. Funny how much you can laugh at something small at 4am.
