Every day, I see a new post on the forums (and Im not looking to rain on anyones parade here) about how much people are looking foward to NWN2, how they cant wait to have Layonara represented as PW in it, and all the expectations that go with it. It is always nice to look forward to something, and I have noticed that new games always generate a great deal of pre-release fervour. Expectations are high, and we all hope that this will live up to its much publicised hype. However, I have to say this. I love Layonara the way it is now:
It runs on a relatively low spec'd PC.
It is entralling and exicting.
Well put together, and dynamic.
Has some great people behind the scenes.
Lots of other stuff, that Im sure I dont have to tell you about, as you all know.
So lets look forward to Layonara on NWN2, but spare a thought and think how lucky we all are to have found this great place. Oh yeah!.. when is NWN2 being released? ;)

Unfortunately I just jumped on the bandwagon, and it seems that it's running away while leaving me in the dust.
Just joking. I've known about Layonara for some time now, but I just joined up - finally got my hands on a legit copy. So I suppose I'm not that enthusiastic about NWN2... heh... but I extend my best wishes to the Layonara team and players. From the sounds of it, you guys have a wonderful place. So congratulations.

Lets face it. NWN2 will be a better game. But were not playing NWNights are we. Were playing Layonara. And Layonara on NwN1 or NWN2 is still Layonara for me.
I agree with Rasterick, theres nothing wrong with Layon now, and I doubt therell be anything wrong with Layo later.
To be honest, I dont really care about NWN the game, just Layo.

i agree with rasterick. Layo on NWN1 is great And i love the RP and everything. But I think Layo could even be better on NWN2.
Why? because the worlds that can be created for NWN1 are like blokes. it is very Square. Nothing wrong of course but since I like good grapics. I know layo on NWN2 would be better. because the worlds that can be created for NWN2 are not as Square. I even think that NWN2 would alow for so much more things that you might soon forget about NWN1.
however I would not forget NWN1 because thats the game that lead me here to Layonara, this great world filled with many RP aportunities. And since i'm here on layo. i have started to like RP more and more.
what ever Layo has instored for us in the future. I'd be there to enjoy it. along with everyone else.

This has been kind of said already but it doesn't hurt to repeat it....
What makes Layonara unique is the community. We can have Layonara on the NWN platform, NWN2 platform....heck, even the Half-Life platform if we really tried hard enough....or really just about anywhere we wanted. It's not the engine and the graphics that really makes things special, but rather it the people...the players and GMs, the Project Team and really just all the effort that so many people put into this place out of a true affection for the world. *wipes a tear*
Having said that, a little eye candy goes a long way!
And for Rasterick, NWN2 is being released in mid-September by all accounts, however Layonara will not likely switch over fully until January 2007.

Y'know... I'm starting to think that maybe the switch to NWN2 might not be the best of ideas. I mean, really, how many players can afford the kind of machine that it'll take to run NWN2? All my spare money's going towards NWN2 machines, be it the servers or my own.

Bear in mind, there will be a fair lag between the release of NWN2 and Layo's port...
After all, the DMs and World Designers may be superhuman, but some of the haks which we acknowledge as normal components of Layo (most notably, the CNR system) will take a non-trivial time to port. So even though NWN2's release date fast approaches... it's not gonna be an instantaneous thing.

To Stephen: I believe when it comes down to it, if the requirements for NWN-2 are THAT big, we'll probably end up sticking with NWN-1. L and the Team want to do what's best for the community, and let's face it, a new game will help keep the community interested. It IS the stories, the characters, the interaction and the people that keep us here, but after three or so years of the same graphics it starts to get a little old.
I'll never leave Layo for good and that's just something you're all going to have to deal with *winks* but we can't run on NWN-1 forever and a new game will go a long way in assuring Layonara a bright future. I'm starting to ramble though so, yeah.

As said above-we're not playing NWN 1-we're playing Layonara! I, for one, would hate to see Layo (1) go by the wayside. Certainly, if you want to play NWN (2)-there will be hundreds of new modules created for it. Maybe the designers and scripters can't wait to get their hands on a new toolset, but as with most new games there will be bugs and glitches to labor through. Why replace something when it's not broken? Personally, I've only seen half of Layo and wouldnt mind having time to see it all before it goes.

There's going to be a large hole in content even six months after release of NWN2... a good amount of the community creatures and whatnot that Layo has may not be there. That said I'm not going to worry about it too much either way. I like the eye candy of NWN2 but I like the huge mass of community content that NWN1 still provides.

Better graphics? not even. It all seems drawn with a lot less details. The only real improvement I have seen, is the pc models. They don't look as blocky as the one in nwn1.

Well, once they decided that every module file would be upwards of 2 gb for up to 20 screens, and that the players had to download the entire module to the clientside in order to log into a server and play on it, they lost my vote. Then not only are you burning up bandwidth and turning off new players, but anybody who plays on a server now has a copy of your world, and they can play it themselves and dissect it, find out where mithral is on their first days, find out the immunities and special attacks of every single monster in game, etc. These factors make it unplayable as a server world like ours... and add to that a plethora of half-brained, custom made for WoW classes like Warlock, Mystic Spirit, Druid Sorceror and guy who hits the refresh button all day and keeps casting. After the first expansion, that game literally spit in the face of everything D&D ever was, mechinically.
The release of NWN2 was one of the biggest disappointments of my entire life. Right after the trainwreck that was the expansion pack for Gothic 3. But first and foremost... the release of D&D 4.0.
WHY GOD, WHY?!!!

Warlock was a slightly broken class in PnP - moreso or less so depending on which Invocations you took, and whether or not the bad guys had Spell Resistance (and if your DM rolled for attacks of opportunity on Spell-Like abilities appropriately).
In NWN2, it was just trashed.
In 4e, it's surprisingly well-balanced, and works very well with the combat system. I still prefer 3.Xe, but having played 4e, it's not terrible for a certain kind of game.

heh, 4th ed. isn't so bad... but maybe I'll make a thread in the just for fun so as not to railroad this (albeit really old, and perhaps now irrelevant) thread to talk about 4th ed. DnD.

I am actually going out of town tomorrow to a "nearby" town, to play D&D 4th edition as the groups buffer. That being Warlock/Mage. We shall have to see how that goes, eh

I love to Roleplay, I have for the last ten years be it a simple online chat game or sitting around on everyone's day off with a mountain of snack foods and a table full of dice. No matter where you Roleplay, it's not the system or the computer game that makes it worth coming back to again and again, it's the people. My DM is more than just a little picky about who plays his campaign because he's had player who just didn't work and three weeks of bad sessions ensued. The years Layonara has been online shows what kind of a Roleplaying community has been built here, a good solid world with a dedicated team of DMs and players.
That being said, I hope the world of Layonara never jumps on the NWN2 bandwagon. The number one reason my room mates and I all roleplay is because it's free fun for hours. Movies, malls, theme parks, and bars all cost money, even if it's just the gas to get there. So finding an online world for an old game that was laying about collecting dust meant a great deal of excitement to me. I honestly haven't the money to throw around on much of anything aside from bills. So moving on to a new game means I'll have to give up Layonara until I can get together money for a new computer and the new game itself. Something that costs a small fortune in my world. Any players on Layonara who like me just want to have some fun but haven't got a lot to give won't be following behind any upgrades, if ever.
Looking through this thread though it seems like any updates to a whole new game aren't likely to happen any time soon. A relief to me. But even running on older computers with an older game it can't be cheap for the DM team, why else would they have a donations button?

@Shrowd,
At the time this thread was started, layo was going to move to NWN2... then it came out, and the powers that be decided that it wouldn't work. Sometime later, they decided to leave the DnD world, and we are currently phasing out DnD based lore, to move to a standalone game. For more information on what updates to the game will happen:
http://forums.layonara.com/layonara-mmo/157522-faq-general.html
And yeah, I hear you on the costs and stuff... I found Layo for similar reasons. I've said before that I do intend to follow layo to its next incarnation, because the community here means a lot to me, and hopefully my budget will increase before too long, so that I can continue...
