Soul Mother Question
« on: May 28, 2007, 12:23:12 PM »
Ok...

My main character got her 9th token.  That being said does she know that one more is it?  I'm just trying to figure out if this effects her views on the world and how I should play her.  Granted I'm not going to be running her into certain death for sure from an OOC context, but I guess my question is basically if it is a topic she would discuss, let her friends know so they would protect her a bit more, etc.  She's a good crafter and has a shop and and Inn etc. so she has lots of stuff she can do without risking death, but I'm just wondering basically if this is IC knowledge, and if so how others have handled this knowledge in game before.

Thanks!

I have always believed it to be IC knowledge, and have and will RP it as such until told otherwise. *Shrugs.* I figure someone used to having the tethers holding them to the world ripped away would have a feel for how many are left.

I believe the bindstones tell you how many you have left, yes?

Yes, but that seems sort of more OOC mechanical than anything else. If you can't tell, then you can't tell, regardless of if the bindstone tells you as a player...if you can tell (and I'm pretty sure everyone assumes you can), then you don't really need the big magic rock to tell you your soul has almost completely been ripped away, right? ;) Though I'm sure if it were supposed to be unknown in-character, it wouldn't be so readily available.

I wouldn't call it metagaming to have your character be aware of it though, no. I don't know if she would know "oh, I have lost eight soul strands out of ten" for example, but know that the tethers tying her to this world have been cut away to the point of barely existing, as Stephen said... why not? :)

The way this is written makes it sound like NPCs have researched this sort of thing in an IC sort of way, so it seems reasonable to assume that PCs would have heard about a limit of ten from somewhere.

Always imagined that there would be some sense of deep loss from an IC standpoint to the extent that 9 SS lost (or 14 with SMD), would indicate that "something's off or I've lost something".  Intuition within reason is a perfectly acceptable thing to RP. I think the SS thing is within reason.

Totally agree with the intuition standpoint even if the character is not the type who would conduct the necessary research to know exactly where he/she stands with the Soul Mother.    If you don't think your character would know where he or she stands then statements like "The Soul Mother has visited me so many times, I just don't think I could survive another visit" or "I'm so tired, if I die one more time I'm not sure that the bindstone can bring me back again" could me made.  Just my two cents.
