Why does this spell only affect some undead and not others? My understanding of it was that it should affect all undead?

Not affected at all? Not affected as you'd expect?

There's a reflex save that can cut the damage in half. It only stands a chance of outright "killing" vampires and shadows. Other undead types just take damage.

What sort of undead did you try it on and what was the effect?

And because it's a reflex save involved, if the undead in question has evasion and makes the save, then no damage, no death, no effect.

Okay mummies in Storans took between 1 and 4 dmg max from sunbeam...they all failed their saves.

Mosscrypt undead, I used a sunbeam causing 1-4 dmg they all failed their saves and then followed up with an Undeath to Death to no effect and once again they failed their saves.

Any explanations for that??

First guess - by some mistake they aren't tagged as undead.

That sounds messed up...if truly undead... the sunbeam should do more damage and the undeath to death should kill most of em outright.

Maybe Soulz is right about not properly tagged as undead.

I'd be interested to see portions of you're logs for those encounters...maybe there's something there that would help understand why it's not working...remote possibility, but guess I'm just curious.

I concur with Dezza in regards to the undeath to death spell.. I have also used it there with no affect.

Well at least for mummies in Storan's They seem to work fine as Undeda. otherwise Lance were unable to turn them, which is something i have made in the past, but will try to check at is it now for confirmation but I don't know if the tag that afects what turns afects, is different of the one that rule what the spell affects.

If that's the case (and I'm not saying it is or isn't...I haven't looked), then it's been that way for a very long time, dating at least back to the start of v3 in 2006 and probably beyond that when the creatures were first designed.

But given that Pallena is level 15, far short of the expected average 52ish damage for things that fail their saves. In fact, the values are pretty close to the average damage for non-undead (17). It doesn't explain the first set, but if the spell didn't properly recognize undead...

Okay, I did a bit of digging on this...

Apparently the way the script targets creatures results in the spell doing "living thing" damage if there is a living thing in the area. If the targeting was not changed for the Layo custom version of the spell, that would at least partially explain the numbers. I still have no idea why it would do less than 5 damage when Pallena (level 15) casts it though.

Forgive me, if in my computery ignorance this doesn't make sense, but would it be possible to change sunbeam to the same sort of targeting as sunburst (which doesn't seem to suffer from the same infirmity)?
