Um...wow *overwhelming* Where do I start?

Well...

LORE: starthere (http://lore.layonara.com/starthere)
Are a few good places.
Look at the maps, read the world lore, read the instructions for submitting a character.
It's not as intimidating as it seems at first, I promise :-)
And welcome to Layo!

I am familiar with char bio submissions, but I need to start out reading up on this particular world *gets to it*

Welcome!
ycleption's links are great places to start. I also found it useful spending 15-20 minutes reading some other PC submissions (link here (http://forums.layonara.com/character-approvals/)) for inspiration and an idea of what was expected to get into the game. It can be a little intimidating, feel free to ask as many questions as you like, i'm sure you will find everyone is more than happy to help and get you having fun in no time!

*WAVES and Pounces* you made it!

Another good place to look is the Handbook (http://forums.layonara.com/local_links.php?catid=8). Many place names are no longer valid, but the histories are still largely accurate. Important things to remember when reading the handbook:
- Blood is dead. Really dead. Mountain-range-blown-up-around-him dead.
- A period followed during which the debris from said mountain range circled the globe, effectively inducing a nuclear winter that lasted around twenty years.
- While I won't go into all the places that had their names changed, here are some of the key ones: Rilara is now Alindor. Xantril is now Belinara. Port Hampshire is Port Hempstead. Fort Velensk is Fort Vehl. As for the rest - well, compare the maps in the Handbook to the Maps of Layonara (http://lore.layonara.com/MapsofLayonara) on LORE.
And as Pseudonym said, reading the other approved submissions is always a good idea. :)
Welcome!

Sorry, wasn't meaning to imply you didn't know how to write a bio, but Layo has some restrictions on alignments and some other things...
If you read http://forums.layonara.com/character-submissions/114377-guidelines-characters-submissions-prestige-classes-other-information.html you will make the character approvers very happy.
