"Cook the stuffing separately — it's MUCH safer!" the government says in  turkey guidance reworked in the Clinton era. "Measure the temperature  of both the turkey and stuffing! Don't just trust a pop-up indicator!"

Can anyone explain why a government would have turkey guidance in the first place?

Don't they have better things to do then write turkey guidance?

It's pretty simple, really.  There actually are a lot of stupid people in America.  It seems worse than it is since it's the stupid people who end up on TV and Youtube, but there are still plenty even without the exaggeration and skewed viewpoint.  Since we have a government "of the people," and since you'd have to be some sort of moron to want to be a politician, stupid people end up in the government and we end up with things like turkey guidance.

Also, since that guideline probably came from the Department of Agriculture (USDA), no they don't have better things to do.  That's actually their job, amazingly enough.

I do paperwork for a college campus computer department, taking orders and payments from all the professors and administration.  I will tell you now, the students are only 1% of the stress, and the 99.999% of the rest of it is from the staff and faculty.  These same people that lecture you about the "real world" when they give you a zero for showing up 30 seconds late will bang on our doors an hour after closing, throwing infantile hissy fits.  The more important their positon, the longer their job title or the more extensive their acadamic expertise is, the more likely they are unable to tie their own shoelaces.  The Network Administrator for the President of the Campus got into a shouting match with us over why we don't carry Norton Antivirus for mac.... yeah
