Title: Familliars
Post by: on February 18, 2005, 11:09:00 pm
Since ZV has gone off making a bunch of polls, and there are a large number of mages, druids, and rangers on the server, each with their own ability to summon from several varieties of companions lets see which is the most popular.

Which do you prefer and why?

hmm I like the Imp for a few reasons...firstly it's a tough little critter with a poisoned attack reaching deadly poison, it is regenerating and it has some nifty invisiblity spells which always come in useful.  The other reason I like it is that its of lawful evil alighnment  whereas Bil is chaotic good and this leads to funny RP between the two :)

The breath weapon of the pseudo dragon (especially higher level) is a real crowd pleaser.  The punishment the panther can take is respectable, however.

Ice Mephit. Trying something different and besides Basset Hounds are not available.

Fire Mephit for first 10 levels than Pixie all the way up.

Pixie all teh way for this old wizard, makes for an interesting dicotomy.  Pixie also enable Improved invis, and a great sneak attack taht works well, and most of all you have the abilities of a thief of your own level.

Personally I like the Imp as well. The damage reduction it has, the regeneration and gets, and the fun you can have playing a mischevious imp that likes to have fun and poke fun at people is priceless. The thing can take a beating, and if you throw a few buffs on it, it can deal it out as well.

My second favorite is the pixie though, simply because it's a cute little rogue all wrapped into a nice green package.

More an imp person myself, the pixie noise drove me absolutely nuts after about 5 mins.. low tolerance for twinkling noises!

When choosing my familiar, I had to go for the RP factor. Lived in the Underdark, big big cave. Bat kinda made sense. He stinks in combat, and probably always will, but he's used more as a carrier pigeon anyway. ;)

Could have taken the giant spider or eyeball...

Thought about the eyeball but decided not to go with it, but I'm pretty sure Giant Spiders are only for Druids/Rangers. If there were spiders I missed it.

Depends on my alignment when I'm a mage. I pretty much always play neutral, so mephits tend to be what I have as an option. And some of the animals. Since I tend to play envokers, mephits. My last invoker has a ice mephit named Pale.

When I play a druid its always a bear. Always. Bears for teh win.

Yea, ZV, that's why I chose Pixie, pure RP.  If you read my character Sub and my char developement you see how the old venerable mage gets stuck with a hardened battle pixie. I think it's fun to RP her.

You can't deny the power of the Fairydragons confuse breath attack, or the improved invisiblity

i chose the raven because of the poison and because its true netraul.  Also Ravens are sneaky and attack and the withdraw plus it compliments my character since i has a high HP

Eyeballs are NE.  I just HAD to choose one for my CG inventor gnome for the ongoing nefarious rebellion factor.  I RP him as a biological experiment gone horribly wrong, an oxes eyeball accidentally stored in a bottle of enchanting oil, warped by the fluctuations in the weave cause by his spellcasting.  As he was born a hideous freak without hands, Mr QUimby is a very bitter and twisted individual bent on revenge against his maker Brilligimble, and the rest of the world out of rageful hand-envy.

Pretty much a huge beholder swarm CDQ of betrayal in the making ;)

I figure this is a large group of rangers or wizards responding to this because I see how a brown bear has a small percentage of votes, either way.. bornw bear or a dire wolf are the elite for the druids, they amount massive power and constitution, added the magic fang, they are hurting ppl like there is no tommorow.. so either of those I support.

Slightly off topic for a moment, but my band covered that song!

Back on topic though, I took the giant spider for RP reasons as well, it's poison attacks are nice, but it needs a higher HP to be of real use to me.

slightly off topic, but my characters have met Mister Quimby in game once or twice, and it is indeed a twisted but hilarious little bugger.    nice work !

Another reason I chose My Pixie is because of my voiceset which is Deekin. When ever I slip I always blame the Pixie or her friends for throwing their voices.

I say Ice Mephit. They have all sorts of craay bonuses, first off. Secondly, they've got this amazing tendency to be cold, sinister little beings. More aloof than elves, they hate 'pitiful wingless freaks' a lot. *shrugs*

I had to go with the hellhound, at first it was because I thought it was the coolest thing on there, and Dog does fit Jeran's personality and attitude.  Later on I had the idea that since Dog was an outsider, I could throw in all sorts of pop culture refrences since nobody said exactly where the hellhound came from.  So I get all sorts of entertaining (well at least to me :)) RP out of him.

I like the bat. Not really sure why. Its horrible in combat. But I usually name my bat Dracula, which is kina fun.

My familar came about because I wished to bring my cat in RL into the game.  He's a large coal black cat named Luke.  Just like the one Marcus summons forth.

Panther all the way.
Dunno why. I've just got 2 cats and they are really cute!
What can i say? I LOVE CATS
(would have prefered a lion or a tiger though.....)
