Oh those Wacky Scam Artists!
« on: June 15, 2009, 03:03:12 pm »
While I was applying for jobs online, I received an email from an offer that seemed far too good to be true.  I've done eBay for over 10 years not, so needless to say I can smell one of those mass mailing scams from miles away.  I sent back a polite response at first just in case it was a valid offer and began to test them.  Hope you enjoy the zinger I sent them at the end!

Hello Rebecca,

First and foremost thank you for your lightning-quick reply!  I am very much interested in the position you are describing and feel that it is quite certainly right up my alley.  I must admit, I am somewhat of a computer nerd at heart, so the prospect of working in this type of profession definitely appeals to me.  I've worked in online technical support, billing and accounts for ISP services since the age of fifteen, also working weekends instructing the elderly from my mother's choir group in MS Word document formatting and general OS proficiency.  Since then, I have had well over 7 years of professional experience in both online and technical fields.  Web development, online sales, Point of Sales systems and customer account management are all second nature to me!

Please send me as much pertinent information about this position and the company you work for ASAP so that I can review the credentials of your corporation and attain a deeper understanding of the expectations for this position.  What is the name of this company, for starters?  How long has it been in business?  Where are your offices located, and when would be a good opportunity to set up an interview in order and meet face-to-face?  I can be available as soon as Tuesday, June 16th onward.

I look forward to hearing more from you, and thank you for your valuable time.

-John

No thank you.  Switzerland is a bit of a commute for an interview, and I don't work for people I have never met face-to-face.  Too much potential for data mining and identity theft, especially when one transmits personal info and bank data "to get paid" over the internet to complete strangers.  One could then easily use said information online and perform direct wire transfers, emptying out the victim's account and issuing themselves credit cards and loans in their name.  This is particularly a risk when an employer has a free yahoo.com account rather than a corporate or paid domain name, and there is no mention whatsoever of their company anywhere on the internet.  Good luck in your endeavors.

-John

PS: I would suggest in the future that you target people who are currently employed as they have more money to siphon.  Sure we unemployed folks might be easy targets as we are desperate and most are willing to do or believe anything to get a job, but it's kind of like stealing candy from 100 babies instead of picking the pocket of a single rich man.  I can assure you that you will get far greater profit from one wallet than 100 lollipops.  (I could send you some debt and credit card bills perhaps)  Have you read up on a Mr. Charles Ponzi?  It might be worth your while.

I'm seriously considering adding to my references in resumes... "I have had online correspondences with over 1200 exiled Nigerian monarchs, all of whom are millionaires."

Lonn you world-weary cynic, I think you just missed out royally. I bet you $1,000,000 Miss Rebecca Wilson is a decent, honest, forthright Swiss businesswoman and you're totally off the mark with your baseless accusations.

PS. In case I lose this bet, please forward to me your bank details so that I may wire transfer the lost wager to you as efficiently as possible.

Hey everyone, first time poster at this forum.

I just received the same email, except it was from Kate Primsley (kateprimsley@yahoo.com). I was also suspicious of the email, since I literally JUST signed up for an account at CareerBuilder.com...

Apparently, "It (CareerBuilder) is a legit site, but I wouldn't post a resume on there. I did and have gotten so much spam that I took it off and closed down my email address and had to open a different one! I also am getting ready to change my phone # I get lots of calls from people trying to sell me things. I have never gotten a job offer from anyone that I have applied for from that site either! I think they get so many resumes they are just too overwhelmed and they get resumes from people who aren't even qualified for the job! Don't fall for those work at home online things, they are all scams! Go to Better Business Bureau website to read the warning signs."

So, curious, did you also sign up for a CareerBuilder account?

Also, I would be interested to see the contents of the aforementioned "attached application form" if possible :-)

Indeed.  The email came literally within 3 hours of using careerbuilder.com!  I keep getting phone calls now from University of Phoenix, online degrees, etc.  Thanks for the heads up.  Taking down my info from the site right now.

Ah yes, network marketing... It seems to be a common thing in even the spammers' networks.
For some reason my own Yahoo account hasn't gotten a bit of spam I have not subscribed to :o

ps: Pseudonym: Can others than Lonnarin claim that bet you made just now, as well???

There is an old (Scottish perhaps?) saying: if it sounds to good to be true, then it is.

There is another one that says, if it sounds like manure, smells like manure, and looks like manure, then the chances are good that it is manure. (I used manure to replace the original word, so not to offend.)

And my final one, and favourite: don't put a sock in a toaster.

I cannot believe people still fall for some of these scams.  It seems so obvious, but you hear something about it on the news every night.  Did this happen as the result of a resume service?  Or was it the actual job posting site that got you?
