Server Issues
« on: November 27, 2005, 02:52:00 pm »
I know the team is working hard to resolve issues about server performance. I want to thank them for all the hard work at this time and for them to not take the following as anything but, what I hope is seen, constructive.

With all the custom scripts and other burdens on the server I think the player limit of 64 too high. Today (11-27-05 PST) a GM ran an event with about 30 players while about another 15 or more were on for a player load of 45. The lag was insane. The server crashed at least 2 times, but did come back with out issue. I "lost" my ox due to I dont know what, as I had cleared the areas I moved through of monsters. Gone with all the items on board.

If lowering the limit is not an option how about moving the maps for Rilara to the East Server which sits empty at least 90% of the time to better use resources? Might as well move the other islands too. So just keep Mistone on the West server as the load of players is more than enough to tax it.

I know GM want to include as many people as they can in the events but it seems the lag with the large groups is too much. I will not join any event with more than 10 for the Lag reasons. Death is far too easy and the current policy of no challenge for DTs or lost GP is more than enough reason for anyone to steer clear of such events. I know some themes such as the Current Blood Invasion can not help but involve all, but many of the sub quests dont seem to warrent the group sizes.

If these issues are being covered in anohter thread then sorry for the repeat.

Again Great job on the best PW out there! Keep it up.

I hear your pain. Sadly, it is a pretty bad limiation with NWN and is out of our control.  It is not the server load that causes the problem, it is the number of character in a single area that seems to cause the most lag.  And thusly, large parties will indeed cause a lot of lag, no matter how many players happen to be on at the time.
Moving Rilara to another server will do nothing about this problem.  The number of areas is not causing the lag, it is the number of people in a single area and how NWN was coded to handle players in an area (something we can not change--it was hard coded). If we move Rilara to central it would reduce the size of the module but it would not help with the number of players on the West server as few people ever even go to Rilara--maybe a dozen or so over the period of a 24 hour period--unless a quest is being run.
So... limiting the number to less than 64 will not help because of what I mentioned above.  Moving Rilara will not help due to what I explained above.  Really the only thing we can do is to have a "quest" server and bring modules up and down on that server when large quests are running. But.. that takes money and it also would require some coding changes I think.
Sorry for the lag and the problem.

*sighs* Man I wish I could donate, but here in Estonia, it would cost about as much to donate as the sum of the donation... I'm sure Ar7 agrees with me  :(

Aye, sometimes I am feeling like a leech here, but there is nothing I can do. PayPal is also out of the question, since they don't accept eastern European countries as members *frowns*

And then there's those of us who are too young to have a credit card, and who thusly cannot get a PayPal account.  Not to mention the horrible poverty a few of us live in, as all of our family's money goes into paying off debt, and keeping our internet on...

I totally agree with the idea of sending cheques. I want to make a monthly donation, but since I dont have a credit card and Im not sure paypal accepts debit cards its a little hard do. If opening a quest server would end the whole lag issue Im all for it.

I've never tithed, but I suppose donating to Layonara would count.  Ten percent, upon my next paycheck.
