New Addition to the Foraging System - Forage For Wood
« on: July 08, 2005, 06:10:00 pm »
In the next update, Druids and Rangers will have an alternative to chopping at trees, here's how it works:

Start a campfire near a placeable tree (you must be within 10 metres), when you click the campfire you will see the option to Forage For Wood.  A calculation is made based on your Search and Spot skills vs. a DC 30. (d20 + Search Skill + d20 + Spot Skill vs. DC 30).  If you succeed you will find 2d4 branches of the wood that grows nearby.

You can only do this once every 90 real life minutes.  You will also not be able to do this while Invisible or under any forms of Sanctuary.

Is this true for druids and rangers only? Since rogues can have high search and spot skills.. Also can weapon masters... Since spot is one of their character skills.

It isn't about their skills at Spotting and Searching, it's about their ability to find good wood and recognize what is useable to craft with being Nature savvy.  It's also an alternative to actually cutting down the tree which is not an option to a Druid and this plays better for a PC who doesn't want to be seen whacking at a tree to cut down branches.

Makes perfect sense, as long as other classes can't do the same with high spot and search skills.

Thats great, really helps the RP options.  I also noticed that bards have a perform option on camp fires, I love it. ITs great druids and rangers don't have to cut down trees or pretend their only harvesting dead trees etc.  Its a nice option. Its 90 minutes refresh so its less total branches then cutting down living trees but its should be as far less are on ground dead then in a tree.

my only sugestion possibly is make the d20 roll only happen once, IE D20 +spot +search vs DC 30, otherwise it's 2d20 +spot +search and it becomes too easy to find the stuff

As easy as swinging an axe?

Considering Spot and Search are not Druid class skills I think the calculation is fine.  Find me a druid with 15 points combined in these two?

No kidding. And finding dead wood and fallen branches should not be *that* difficult anyway.

Go into any forest. How hard is it?

Coolness!  Looks like I might have to bring my ranger out of retirement to try this!   ;)

Is this set to 90 mins per area? example say i foraged for hickory in the area of Hlint..then went to broken forest to look for oak?
