Title: System Failure, Character Corruption
Post by: orth on December 06, 2015, 12:34:37 pm
Hello all,I wish I was posting better news but there has been an issue as you know recently with the system acting quirky and some characters going missing and I've finally figured out why and the consequences. The servers file system was filling up dramatically with some rogue logs that would get exponentially bigger and then it would get filled to capacity. This caused the server to not save characters properly as there was no more room on the drive. I've corrected this issue but the issue is going to be a headache for some. The following characters are corrupted and there are no reasonable backups for them, the backup system overwrote both their daily backup and weekly backups with the corrupt file and I have no other known backups. It's a shame the weekly backup ran just a few hours before I realized there was a serious filesystem problem. The following characters are corrupted but I do have a weekly backup:We have been discussing the best way to restore the characters, we know how much XP they last had due to the db. We know some of the partial equipment by being able to somewhat disassemble the corrupted files but we have been trying to figure out the simplest means to restore your character exactly to how they have been. I have also been trying to find another backup from a month ago on my personal computer but it looks like I deleted it.Some of the options we're considering is:a) Just restore the character exactly to how they were by giving you the XP and the items and working on the honour system for items/gold on person.b) Give you the opportunity to create a new character (must be approved) with same XP as lost character but no equipment.c) Restore your character with the proper XP but give no equipment but a certain number of Fortune for you to decide whether to try to buy new stuff or use it for XP at your own discretion as you see fit.We are open to any suggestions you wish to make. We feel extremely bad about this and want you to have faith in the systems and we'll be happy to correct them as soon as we can. We will probably handle each of these on a case by case basis, but please feel free to discuss any other ideas you may have. The two characters whom I have weekly backups will be a lot easier to restore, especially if they haven't done a whole lot since last weekend.-orthP.S. All other things like housing/bank/storage/fortune are still on the DB and have not been lost in any capacity. It's just the physical bic file that's gone all messy.

Thanks for the reply Orth,

I'll mull over what is easiest to do with my characters, but a question on crafting levels.

Are these stored also on the DB or would crafting levels be lost? If they are lost are they returnable? ( One char was highest level enchanter / gem crafter )

My char was only level 6, I'm not horrified about the prospect of losing his copper chain mail and copper greatsword! I'd rather just go back to the XP he was at and take the 1 fortune point it would take to buy back the gear, but if its easier on the team I could start a new char and get him back up to level six quick.

Crafting XP is stored in the database, so crafting levels can be recovered.

Is it safe to play?

I did a 'SAVE CHARACTER" on the menu screen for Kenzie in the middle of the week. Does that help?

Do we have to change the name a little so not to confuse anything? Much like a character redo at the creation when someone messed up.

What happens to the NPC quests?

Should we (people who lost chars without a backup) make a new character with a slightly varied name then, and find a GM to bump us up xp? I'd rather deal with this sooner than later, I got all excited about the char and would like to get back to playing him.

Thanks!

Hi Teo,

Yes and no. Yes, if you just want to create the character as it was, go ahead and do that. You don't -have- to change the name slightly but you are welcome to. If you do so, please update his application with the variation. Once s/he's created post in the Grievances forum with the usual format, bioware name, char name, issue, etc, and tell us what of the options you are looking to do of Orth's posted available. One of the DB GMs will take it from there, coordinating with another GM as necessary.

Hi Charm2009,

I don't have all the answers to your questions, so leaving this for Dorg or Orth to answer. Just wanted to let you know you weren't being skipped.

I recreated Raven with the same name. Her journal is as it was before the corruption occurred. The quest status' are still there minus the equiment given from the quests. The entries I wrote in her journal are also still there also. I will resubmit her with a name change.

Title: All,Please hold off on
Post by: Dorganath on December 08, 2015, 08:19:11 am

All,

Please hold off on submitting or making new characters with name changes to replace these that were lost.

We are aware that recreating a character with the same name will mean that the character does not have his/her equipment as before, but all of the database-stored aspects of the character will be in place. It is actually significantly more work on our end to transfer all of this to a new character with a different name, and in the end we still have to see about replacing your equipment.

Please have patience while we get the process and needs worked out.

Post by: LordCove on December 15, 2015, 06:48:58 am

Can I get either of my three characters back?

Kagen's character is already attached to the database, he has crafting levels and banks, he just needs xp and a few items.

Maran is not attached to database, so I understand he will take time to restore.

Marlon55 / Leon is apparently in a weekly backup and needs restoring.

Regarding Maran, I did some digging and I see no reason why he wouldn't have his crafting levels; they are visible and present in the database. However, the database currently suggests that he had no gold in his bank account and no items in his bank chest. In other words, it's not a matter of being "disconnected" as the fact that the database contains a quantity of zero on these data points. I'm personally keeping the notion of some sort of error having affected these two things, though it seems somewhat unlikely on the surface given that the systems are somewhat separate and stored in different tables within the database. If we can find some backup data to support one position or the other, we'll adjust accordingly, but at the moment it looks like Maran had nothing in his bank.

For the delays, I do apologize, but as I said elsewhere, we're currently short-staffed due to RL events, computer failures and/or simply being busy due to the time of the year. As such our coverage is very thin at the moment. However, I will at least look at restoring the XP for any characters that were lost and subsequently recreated under the same name as soon as I can. This can be done through the database, so we do not need to coordinate for this part at least.

Post by: LordCove on December 15, 2015, 11:12:07 am

Thanks Dorg,

After a quick check, Maran does have his crafting levels attached to his character. I'm not concerned about losing his gold or bank vault, I don't remember what was in it so it can't have been that important.

Xp for either characters would be great! Thanks!

Thanks for double-checking the crafting thing. Good to know.

I'll focus on the XP for the moment and we (collectively) will try to work out some time(s) to get gear back in people's hands.

OK folks.

I had a bout with illness for a few days. On the mend now, but it caused a delay.

I have restored XP to the following characters:

The following characters are in a backup and will be restored, but those need to be done by orth:

The restored XP should return these characters to the point they were before the corruption/loss. You will need to re-level these characters yourselves. Please make every effort to maintain the same character build to the best of your memories.

We will start making arrangements with players for restoring their items.

Thanks Dorg, sorry you were feeling sick and glad you are recovering....tis the season I guess.

After logging Sam Night, I don't see any change to his XP.  Is there anything I need to do in game?  I did rest a couple of times and I also checked the other character I originally re-created (Sam Nite), but no xp change there either.  After restoration is complete, I'll post to have Sam Nite deleted in the appropriate forum and I haven't done anything with him (still at just 1 xp).  Sam Night I have been playing and he's currently level 7.

Looks like all is well for Garadel! Equipment wise I'm not worried about that, consider him taken care of!

Side note, I have a level one, chaotic evil barbarian who mysteriously appeared in my inventory about the time Garadel disappeared?

I personally have some time off over this up-coming week, allowing my potential availability to be greater than it normally is. Please post some times below when you could be online and available to receive replacement items.
