Title: New Beginnings: In The Aftermath Of The Fire
Post by: Carillon on November 09, 2009, 09:47:31 pm
//This will be the thread used to track rebuilding efforts, materials, and aid when the time comes. For now, the embers are cooling, the smoke (literal and figurative) is clearing, and people are taking stock before what will be needed to rebuild becomes clear.

After the fire, dedicated patrons and true lovers of the Arms are seen picking through the rubble, either for lost possessions or for anything salvageable--all under the watchful eye of a small detail of Blackwatch guards who, depending on who you ask, are there to make sure no one is injured poking through the unstable structure or are there in case the errant steward shows his face.

A few long-time patrons talk amidst themselves as they begin to salvage any useable stone, tile, small pieces of unburnt wood, etc. that wasn't ruined completely in the blaze, and talk of incorporating these materials into the inn when it is rebuilt. It is generally agreed that the first thing to do once all has been salvaged that can be is clear the site so things can be started fresh, ready to incorporate pieces of the old and the inn's long history into a new building.

After the dedicated patrons have picked over the ruins a little, someone finally steps forward with some initiative to begin clearing in earnest:

"Alright lads .. and, uh, ladies," the patron says, nodding to a few women helping in the effort, "the first thing to do, it seems, is clear away the old! Let's get a couple dozen pickaxes and shovels in here, and start clearing away the fallen rubble. Go easy and save what you can that's undamaged!"

//A list of materials will be posted as soon as we have had a chance to set up a donation center for this cause. When the donation center is set up, characters should be able to use the existing donation NPCs to donate gold or materials to the rebuilding efforts.

Argali catches the words of the patron.

"Don't you think who iz burrning it down should be rebuilding it?"

*Another local, this one with the weathered face of a sailor--and the scent of a fisherman--turns at Argali's words*

"And if the storm drives your boat onto the rocks, do you wait for the storm to rebuild it too? Did we wait meekly for Snowtooth to come down and rebuild our docks, when they were destroyed? I don't know where you're from, lass, but here in Leringard if we want something done, we don't wait around to see if someone else will get it done for us. We put our backs into it and do it ourselves!"

*A small cheer goes up as several people voice their approval for this sentiment.*

*****************************************************

*Later on that night, as charred timbers are shifted and the rubble begins to be moved around, a shout of surprise and "Take a look at this!" and other such exclamations fill the air. As the rubble is shifted, the source of the excitement becomes clear:

There amidst the ruins of the Arms under some fallen beams lies the statue commemorating Cole Norseman. It's dirty and sooty as can be and Cole has a few new scratches, chips and scars that weren't there in life nor part of the sculptor's design, but other than that it looks miraculously unbroken.*

"Huh," says one of the worker, with a bemused expression on his face. "Would ya look at that."

"Heh," another answers him, an old grizzled fellow who's come to the Arms once or twice a week for a drink for longer than most of the others have been alive. "Norseman always was a tough bastard. In death and in life, it seems. Takes more than a fire to kill a Dread Blade!"

*Work for the evening stops, as if the discovery of the statue had been a secret signal of sorts. Someone brings drinks from another small tavern, carrying them over to the site of the inn. One pours some of his drink into the ashes at the foot of the fallen statue. Tired, sweaty and sooty workers pass a pleasant half an hour like that, drinking amidst the fallen stone and charred timbers as the sun sets to the west, somewhere out over the ocean.*

//We rolled dice for the Norseman. He really is a tough old fellow.

*Alatriel slips in unseen among the crowds surveying the damage with her own eyes.  After she's seen enough, she leaves again, silently.*

//Alatriel is going to donate a sum of money to the rebuilding efforts.  I haven't decided how much... mostly because I have no idea what is currently in her bank account.

Some time soon after old Cole is discovered hidden in the rubble, the initial wave of enthusiasm mellows down a little, and serious talk about what might be needed to rebuild the Arms begins.

A local contractor by the name of Neilan Kavanagh who happens to be learned in his letters and good with figures in addition to having years of experience takes an evening over a couple pints at the Twin Dragons. The ale mugs slowly accumulate on the table as the quill goes scratchity-scratchity-scratch at the parchment.

Finally, long after most of the other patrons have left for the night, he tacks up the parchment with a metal tack to a bit of wall where notices are sometimes posted.

//OOC Notes:

The above list was a collaboration between several GMs, including the GM most familiar with housing and rebuilding costs and precedent, with both past requests for building and the large size of the inn and cardhouse taken into account. While it is indeed a long list at first glance, I kindly ask players not to comment on how out of proportion any of the above might be with the RP economy. I think we are all aware that gold flows in faster than out, but every effort has been made to provide some RP justification for why the above is needed. Furthermore, characters have every opportunity to RP trying to reduce the costs all they like, but the figure of 300k is, at least in an OOC sense, non-negotiable.

Donations will be collected via our slick new Layonara Donations Center system. You can donate gold or items--the system will track both--at any of the NPCs available. You will find that the appropriate cause has already been set up and all is ready to go.

A Request: This is intended to be a list that allows a wide range of characters of differing levels and abilities to participate and contribute to the rebuilding in both gold and material form, if they wish. I've tried to include CNR of various levels of difficulty to acquire, and requiring different skills to make. Please, please, please--if you know your character has a lot of abilities or resources at their disposal, do NOT start with the easiest items. Choose something that is a bit of a challenge for you, and leave simpler items for other characters and players so as many can participate as wish to do so.

We will keep track of what has been donated and post it up from time to time, but feel free to use this thread to take initiative or keep track of your own donations, so the inn doesn't end up with 12 jukeboxes, or something silly ;)

Many thanks,
Carillon

"What iz to ztop the Blackwatcherrs burrning it down again?"

Shiff Dragonheart comes to Leringard to Donate 10,000 True cover most of the labor and miscellaneous expenses for the Rebuilding.  Later he comes back again and again with armfuls of the necessary tools to help clear the rubble.

He then looks around for the site's foreman.  "Hey, mind having an old man help out around here?"  He then demostrates his strength and removes a stray timber from the site and hauls it to the refuse piles.

*Ferrit speaks up*  I've never, ever, known Steel to lie--omissions, maybe, but not lies.  He said the Blackwatch firebombed the Inn and kept at it even as those inside tried to flee.  I believe him.  The twelve who died there died at the hands of the Blackwatch.

Tyra begins to spend more time at the Leringard Arms site making sure things get done.  Anyone clearing debris, restoring materials, or plotting for the reconstruction that Tyra feels is slacking she confronts and demands they work to their ability.  Anyone who seems to disregard her she warns that she is the current steward of the Arms, and that she sees herself as in charge of it's reconstruction...  Should anyone give her trouble, she deals with them appropriately. //That means if a DM wants to RP someone confronting Tyra as being the steward that I'll be available for that.

Benjamin is seen entering Leringard, Fodder, his ox huffing and snorting under a heavy load of glass.  He seeks out Tyra.

"Miss,  the Angel's guild promised our aid ta Steel fore the tsunami's hit.  I have another forty ingots of glass here along with a gnomish lens.  I ken take care of yer of the iron bits yer needin, simply send me a list."

Ben settles back on his heels, patting Fodders nose to calm and sooth the overworked animal, waiting for the woman to reply.

Tyra collects any and all materials provided for the Leringard reconstruction and makes sure they are counted, stored, and made available to the craftsman best suited to make use of them as the reconstruction plans progress.  However, she also makes sure that she keeps an eye on all the materials in case certain individuals try to sabotage the reconstruction by stealing materials.  Pity be on anyone she might catch stealing...

Tyra takes the gold, be it in bags or as bank notes, to deposit in a seperate bank account specificaly associated with the reconstruction.  She takes with her her weapons, wary that certain individuals may feel like releaving Tyra of the rebuilding funds, and she is not letting that happen without a fight.

Should that go over smoothly, she arranges for craftsman to begin planning to plotting to restore and secure the foundations, allocating necessary funds for their compensation.
Title: Re: New Beginnings: In The Aftermath Of The Fire
Post by: Carillon on December 10, 2009, 12:20:58 pm
When Tyra seeks to claim the gold that has been donated, she finds there really is none to be transferred over into a bank account at that time. The puzzled contractor asked her if she thought that it was just lying around? He assures her it's already been put to use and that they have been using up the donations as fast as they came in--paying restitution for property damage (the restitution to the families was apparently taken care of by an anonymous donor), paying for labor to clear the site, paying for storing salvaged materials, paying the mages who have made sure icky magical effects from all the destroyed magical items in the inn haven't been making people sick or the area magically unstable ... the contractor shrugs and tells her that they have more pressing needs than they have gold, but offers that perhaps more donations will come in over time.

Ironically, when Tyra goes to talk to some craftsmen about planning the restoration, she finds here and there that they give her odd looks. After she presses they admit that they have already been paid in advance for their work to come on the Arms! (And it wasn't by her. Or by the contractor, if she asks.)

Once again, Benjamin is seen leading Fodder to the site, this time heavily loaded with menagerie of iron mongered parts.  He finds Tyra and begins a short tirade, "Look Miss, the wood and glass is all fine and I don't mind making  the Arms a new lock or two, but nails!  Nails, I tell ya are harder than hen's teeth ta make from scratch!  I got a suggestion or two that may help.  First off, we need ta scrounge what we ken of the other iron works from the wreckage.  Second, I watched a barn raisin in me old country up near Hurix and folks are using a tongue and groove system with pegs these days, hardly a nail in the buildins anymore.  Them barns withstand more abuse from the northern wind than any nailed tagether one, I assure ya.  So, this somethin yer interested in or not?"

A halfling woman rarely seen in Leringard calmly stops by the reconstruction site to drop off a load of wood planking. She stands facing the place where the inn once stood, hands on her hips, and shakes her head, lips pursed. "The gypsy is not going to be happy about this."

With a clucking sound, she calls her ox, which moves to her side. The ox seems grateful to be relieved of its burden, and together woman and ox leave again.

Quote
12 Lengths of Crafted Rope
1 Jukebox
6 Four Flamed Candleholders (chandeliers)
49 Flasks of Oil
47 Small Iron Rods
20 Planks of Oak
19 Long Staves of Oak
281 Iron Spikes
59 Spools of Thread

(Updated, as per a player's request; current as of today, about 2 hours before posting. I suggest noting any donations in this thread if you intend to take care of something so the same thing doesn't get donated multiple times, now that the list is growing short. If you don't want your name posted, PM me what you donated and I'll post it anonymously.)

Pallena walks by and scratches her head. "Two spools of thread all that's needed? Pssh... I'm sure I can convince some spiders to give up a bit of silk..." She comes by a little while later and hands in a couple spools of thread, muttering about stubborn spiders.

With all the needed materials in for the renovation, all that is left is for the workers and craftspeople to finish their work. Little by little, the inn is restored to its former glory. Every day, new furnishings, curtains, cushions and supplies are brought in, and workers begin to talk about it being ready to reopen soon--though of course the final decision on whether to reopen once it is ready is up to the owners.

//We have the inn ready to go back in for the next update.

/// Just for clarity, people can continue to donate, correct? That is, I assume more can be given/will be accepted beyond the base requirements. ///

//Sure, if people want to continue to donate they can, I suppose ... but there is no longer a need to do so, nor a real tangible benefit to doing so at the current time.
