Quill System - Flag as Uneditable
« on: June 29, 2006, 03:18:30 am »
I'm not sure how editability is stored on an item but I was writing IOU's the other day and considering using them as a written form of currency backed by a reputable individual (gold standard hehe.) But I realized that another PC could just edit the note and make it say whatever they wanted.

I got around this issue by using a LORE bird message since those are uneditable. However, they're also 2x2 making carrying serveral around as currency rather onerous.

So, It'd be great if there was a quill command to "finish" a note making it uneditable. IC wise, you wouldn't be able to remove the ink once you put it on (easily and without leaving a trace) however you need to be able to do that while editing it IG incase you make a typo or something.

I suppose another way could be to make "indellible ink" that is not eraseable, have some sort of invisible tags around it and make the delete and erase commands ignore characters between the tags. If you mess up writing one you just have to toss it and start again.

Just as a point of interest, the LORE bird messages can be put into parchment folders as of a few updates ago. That can help with the bulk of them being 2x2.

I know at one time Orth was thinking about making a new skill that allowed document copying/forging (or protection from forging etc.). He is quite swamped with things but the only way what you described above would happen is if we decide to go down that path, which would be cool mind you, but time consuming.

The introduction of forgery (in Layo2, for example) would be fantastic - it would allow for even more layers of intrigue.  Consider me intrigued already.  *L*  I'm not sure how that would be tagged, but it has possibilities.  Possibly a CNR station ("Document Desk"?) could be used to keep away from editing the skill 2das.

On a previous PW server they had CNRable signet rings. These would act much like soul stones where a PC would 'use' them to make them their own. They would then be able to sign documents with the ring.
A forger would have to be a ring maker (jeweler) and would, I assume, attempt to forge a ring with another PC's name. Perhaps the CNR recipe would be a blank signet ring and a letter signed by the PC. A forged letter would always fail at this step, though it would not give an indication that that was the reason for failure.
Signet-signed letters would then have an authenticity. A scribe could put two letters into the scribing station and compare them. It would simply say something like "Letter #1 differs {significantly|somewhat|slightly|not at all} from letter #2." If the scribe was sure letter #1 was truly signed by the PC, then they could give their opinion. Even same-signet signed letters might differ slightly from one another. Wax seals are a fickle medium. Two letters signed with the same forged signet ring would still match.
