Let's set up camp.
« on: August 03, 2006, 02:02:03 pm »
Basically, I find that with adventuring I say from time to time "Let's set up camp here", and only a tinder and some flint to make a camp.

Now here's my idea:
In some modules I've played, if you buy a tent and a mat, and set them up, you get a better sleep and regenerate more health compared to sleeping outside in the snow freezing your bottom off.
You already have the campfire warming you up, just a tent to go with it would look great and add more funner RP!

Maybe later on...if you gather some herbs...could boil up some water from your canteen, mix in some herbs, then you have a warm tasty drink to keep your toes warm in the cold areas.

What do you guys think?

Ah yeah, I remember that module... It was an interesting aspect because it made you have to try and think who should carry what, and resting without a tent or bed mat gave a small penalty or something didn't it? It was a good idea, could be fun if introduced.

But Rangers and Druids don't need tents.  The ybuild lean to's, use caves, under wide spread pines . . . who needs a tent? Pine needles, soft grass, the banks of a river is all one needs for a bed.  :)

Perhaps Rangers and Druids could passively gain a tad more HP than other classes while resting? Druids would regenerate as much as a tented person, whereas a Ranger could regain more than the shelterless one, but less than the sheltered. He would have a choice to put up a tent or not.

just an idea... you could.. RP a tent.. you know.. that thing where you pretend.. and RP it out like..

*pulls out some skins and sets up a tent for the next 20 min, often tripping over strings and sticks in the process. Much to the amusment of any watching*

Though a penelty to sleeping on the floor might be nice. It would incourage people to sleep indoors. Maybe have a check made after each sleep, not sure what skill to base it out, but if you fail its -1 saves or something. Id think a Con check would work well for sleeping outdoors, especially now that were in the "Dark Ages" and its very cold out and all..

Well, to be fair, there's already a penalty for sleeping outside - most indoor designated sleeping areas are "Safe Rest Areas" and give total HP restoration.

And it's cold, but not freezing, outside.  Anyone wearing the robes and armour that most characters wear (sorry, girls) wouldn't feel the cold at all, I suspect.  Even a business suit can keep out temperatures above -5C or so, and given the prescence/abscence of snow, I doubt there's anywhere on Mistone much colder than that.

would be great fun though the whole campfire, with benches and things, maybe you could buy benches to put down to sit on and to avoid cluttering you put a script saying that if you got to far it would say "You almost forgot your bench" as it puts it in your back, flatpacked of course :D

Let's take it one step farther...the tent can be taken down and reused.  Maybe 3 or 4 times.  And to make this silly, you can buy tents that house different numbers of people...and some tents have built in benches in them...and the really high dollar tents have a fireplace and a bathroom.
Tents are a good idea for the touch more HP you might get back, every little bit helps when you're far away from a city.
Oh, and for the REALLY snobbish, high spender...a tent with removable wheels that you can hook to your ox; it even comes with a front porch and a hound dog to sit under the porch.
      :)

And maybe a portable slave to do your bidding.

That was what I was thinking - a tent can be used many times but when it rips, the cold can seep in and give you an uncomfortable rest.
So there should be a chance of ripping your tent when you use it...like when you use a chisel with a deposit of gems.
