Recommendation: 3 or 4 mangled metal pieces be returned for a failed attempt to make throwing axes.

Reasoning: The following materials are required to make iron throwing axes: 9 ingots of iron, 2 shafts of oak, 2 small molds. A failed attempt at throwing axes returns 1 mangled piece of iron.

By contrast, it requires two iron ingots and one small mold to make an iron dagger. A failed attempt at an iron dagger also returns 1 mangled piece of iron.

It seems logical that there should be more "leftovers" for a failed attempt to create something that requires significantly more resources. 3 or 4 mangled pieces of iron is still less than half of the resources required to make the throwing axes.

3-4 mangled metal being returned for throwing axes would make the recipe out of balance with the rest of weapon recipes. Even the largest weapons return no more than two mangled metals on failure. On success, you get 25 throwing axes for those 9 ingots, so the risk/return ratio is pretty high already there. Full suits of armor and large tower shields return 3-5 mangled metals, depending.
This kind of thing was a balancing decision rather than one of "realism". As such, I wouldn't expect the recipe to return more than 2 mangled metals, but someone else should chime in on that, as balancing isn't really my thing.

If it's a balance issue then I'm sure this has been given a lot of thought already and perhaps is beft left as-is. I had hoped to lessen the sting of failure somewhat since throwing axes have a higher resource requirement than nearly all other weapons and need to be replaced often since they are expended.

Thanks for reviewing this.
