Shield Bash
« on: April 12, 2007, 12:45:49 pm »
So I was thinking about making a character. I viewed all the options, and since I am unable to play layonara until the weekend, I had enough time. So I decided I wanted to create a guy that fought with a shield and a shortsword, a versatile fighter/scout that would wait hidden until the batle started, but once he engaged, he had enough armor to survive until the batle is over, and dealt enough damage to be at least slightly effective. How to combine these, however? I came up with the idea of two weapon fighning with sword and shield bashing. (By the way, the character wasn't summed to this, but this is what the suggestion is about).
So, what I am sugestting is the ability to make a shield bash. Since NWN doesn't normally allow this, I was thinking about making spiked shields a weapon, that would as a special property give a bonus to AC (shield bonus, so it would not stack with a normal shield). This weapon could be used with the Shield Bash feat (see below), a weapon proficiency feat like any other. Shields better than copper would give only a bonus to AC, not to atack or damage, for balance issues, but this could be discussed. So this is the raw idea, I think it can be implemented in the system, not sure though, that's why I hope you can answer soon. :)

SHIELD BASH [GENERAL]
Prerequisite: Shield Proficiency. Martial Weapon Proficiency.

Benefit: This feat allows the character to use spiked shields.

Special: A fighter may select Improved Shield Bash as one of his fighter bonus feats.

Spiked Large Shield: One Handed Weapon. Damage: 1d6. Critical: x2. Damage Tipe: Piercing.

Spiked Small Shield: Light Weapon. Damage: 1d4. Critical: x2. Damage Tipe: Piercing.

This is essencially from the PH from 3.5. Just adjusted the feat to suit nwn. Hope it can work.

While I believe this is implementable, there are a number of downsides:

If a shield is treated as a weapon, characters without two-weapon fighting who take this feat will suffer a significant penalty to attacks with their primary weapon, and with the shield.  This might be alleviated by adding two-weapon fighting as feat on the shield, but that would increase the shield's value so much as to make it worth crafting just to pawn it.

Second, shields cannot simply be treated as weapons - a new shield model would have to be made that would be a weapon model, rather than a shield model.  As the team is over their heads now in bug fixes and balancing issues for v3, you'd need to find someone else with the time to make 'em. (Or, they might be on the Vault, who knows?)

I think it's a neat idea, but implementation will be slowed by these issues.

I wish someone would make the necessary models and such for this. Seeing as how SMITE was my favourite skill in DII.... heh, needless to say, if it existed, I would be its biggest fan. :B

The Shield was supposed to be used for two weapon fighting, yes, unless you used the shield without a weapon, but that was its intent all along: to use a weapon in the off hand which would not be as strong as another (you have to spend one feat to use it, you could use it to use a kukri (for the small shield) or a bastard sword (for the large shield) with the exotic weapon proficiency), but that would offer some defense.OR for Rofirein clerics, who could show how the best atack is a good defense (using it one handed) OR for someone who liked doing it :). It would not grant two weapon fightning feats: if you wished to do two weapon fighting, you would have to spend the normal feats to do so. It was just a sugestion that I thout I could give seeing as it came to my mind while making a new character.

Anyway, I can perfectly understand that everyone is busy with v3, but if anyone manages to find some time, I would be greatfull. Thanks.
