Introduce Yourself / Another belated introduction ~ Lynn1020
« on: June 30, 2008, 06:04:54 pm »
[SIZE=16]I finally caved in to do an intro myself. My real name is Tiffany. Lynn1020 comes from my middle name (Lynn), 1020 is from my wedding anniversary, October 20th. I am a southern girl and from what I have found out, I still have a very southern accent. I grew up in Kentucky until I married and moved with my husband. After moving to several different states (including a three year vacation in Hawaii) we now live in the Northwest, near Seattle. It never fails though; anytime I speak I am asked where am I from.

I have been a military wife for almost 18 years now, and also a stay at home mom to three kids (four if you count my husband). Two boys aged sixteen and thirteen, who both play Layo from time to time, and one girl age six. She plays the NWN single player version. I had to finally tell her she could start playing with us when her reading and writing improves. She will lecture me when she watches me play. "Mom do you want to keep playing Emie? Well stop going out alone and wait for your friends!"

I have to say I love that I get the chance to stay at home with the kids, even though you will often find me moaning and complaining. Especially now that I have been nursing a broken foot for the last couple of weeks, and the kids are out of school for the summer and I can't even drive! But at least it does give me an excuse to be in Layo even more.

My husband played Layo for two years before I started. In that time I have to say I hated Layonara. All I knew about it was that it was a game that kept my husband on the computer for hours!! Many times he tried to get me to watch him and try it out. I refused. I was happy with my scrapbooking and Zelda games. Then it got worse! He got our two sons playing it! It drove me nuts having to listen about it all the time. Well to make a very long story short, he finally got me to try it. Emie was born! That was almost two years ago so needless to say I was hooked and haven't left since. Now the whole family plays together at times. I never thought a game could make me laugh and cry as much as this one has.

I have never played any type of D&D game before Layonara. So there was so much I didn't understand and I am still learning. That being the reason Emie started out a lot like me...shy and quiet. Boy has she changed in the last two years!!

General Discussion / This place.
« on: June 26, 2008, 08:46:40 pm »
Hello again everyone, It's me Mykah again..  (Yes I like to post on these forums for some reason)

I have to say that when I signed up to play on this server.. after reading all the rules, as much lore as I could (Which won't be enough until I've read it all) and what not..  I was expecting this server to be amazing.  I was expecting this server to be better then any server I had ever played..  I was expecting this server to be exactly what was missing out of Neverwinter Nights and every other RP game out on the market today..

Well.. I'm here to tell you.. that my expectations.. were completely blown away.  This is by far the best server and best roleplaying experience that I have ever experienced in any form.  Pen and Paper, MMO's.. All of it.  The community that consists of both Players, GMs, etc.. is the most diverse, friendly, helpful and humble atmosphere that I have ever experienced.  Not to mention that every single person that I came across asked me if there was anything that they could do to help.  I am going to be playing here, for a VERY long time.  I just want to thank you all (and I mean it, all) for finally putting to rest the long search of finding a place that just feels.. "right".

You all make it what it is.. without the individuals and the "team" behind it.. it would be nothing more then a virtual replication of everything else out there.  Thank you again, for bringing a LONG time RPers hopes and wishes to a realization and giving me the chance to enjoy RP for what it really is.

General Discussion / God its been a long time
« on: June 24, 2008, 08:54:40 am »
Gday to all you crazy RPers.

It's been so  long since I've visited this forum or played NWN that I think I'll need to read the players manual again.

Anyway with a career change and university commitments + family stuff I've been hell busy.  I think I've finally reached a point where I'll probably start poking my head around every now and then.

So to all my dark comrads, if you're still around, keep an eye out for Alandric (three cheers to Corath).  To all my enemies, you'd better hope you don't get a consultation from doctor Vensk.  It won't be one of your regular check-ups I can promise you that.

Peace,
Polak76

General Discussion / A belated farewell
« on: June 15, 2008, 08:19:54 am »
Hello everyone,

I've been meaning to make this post for some months now, but every time I thought about making it I'd think to myself, "Oh, I'll come back." Once I started thinking about Layonara again I'd get excited to come back and do one thing or another. But I never did come back and GM or play. The fact of the matter is, NWN had a good run (and I've spent and absolutely obscene amount of time playing it) but I'm tired of it. I'm not tired of Layonara, but I just don't want to play NWN anymore, and haven't for a while.

I'd like to formally announcing my resignation from all Layonara position that I've held and release any and all of my characters to NPC use.

Talan's house should go to Lalaith, I believe her and some other characters still use it. Akki's house in Krandor (137 I think, the one closest to the crypts) can be resold.

----

Since about the time I completely disappeared (last December-Januaryish) I've been working on my own project which has captured most of my free time. You can read about it on my blog at:

Cutthroat Studios Developer’s Blog

It's not an MMO or even in the same genre as Layonara, I hope L does not mind me posting the link. The Layonara MMO should come out well before it anyway, which I'm looking forward to as well!

If anyone wants to reach me, feel free to do so! You can find my contact information on the contact page of the website I linked to above (I'm trying to avoid posting my email address on forums these days, some of the email addresses I used to do that with now get more penis enlargement spam than I thought was possible lol.)

Anyway, Have fun everybody! I'm sorry that I won't be here to share the road.

Layonara Server / Lifting of the ban on McLeve41/Naiather
« on: June 13, 2008, 01:33:00 pm »
After quite a bit of discussion we have decided to lift the permanent ban on McLeve41.  This was a difficult decision but the circumstances in the end led us to give him a second chance.

The player was very new when he broke the rules and never had a chance to own up or apologize since he stopped playing well before we even realized he had broken the rules.  Typically what we do in this case is ban the player then wait for them to check the forum and/or PM one of the administrators to plead his case.  In this case it never happened as his interest from Layonara faded.  So we just left the ban as permanent.  His maturity and commitment to be a positive member of the community at this point in time 2 years later led us to believe it would be beneficial for the community and him of course to lift the ban.

Additionally he could have just bought a second copy of NWN diamond or whatever and been right back in game without us being the wiser but he's taken the time to try to do this the right way and be a positive member of Layonara.

We will not be reinstating the Naiather player as his bank account and inventory are tainted, uncertain what truly belonged to him. But we're giving him another chance with a new character.

Please make him feel welcome and trust that he will bring a positive role to the world.

If you have any concerns, do not hesitate to contact me.

« on: May 10, 2008, 01:24:21 pm »
I have a master's degree. Got the piece of paper yesterday, after sitting very bored through a two hour ceremony in a robe with sleeve-wings.

I think my family was more happy than I was.

And now it's back to an 8-5.

On the upside, I'll be more consistent with Layo time now. :p

P.S. To those on the "Reveal the Storm" quest, see the layo server forums. I finally got a post in there, and yes, I pretty much just woke up.

General Discussion / Hello and goodbye :(
« on: April 12, 2008, 11:49:16 am »
Those of my old friends, those i will not meet, hello, I am the insane mind behind Celgar magnus.

I have been away for a long long long time, and it warms my heart to see that this place is still running, with the passion I saw years ago when I first joined. It is with a said and very broken heart that i must make the dreaded farewell post.
I have to leave this fine family and yes to those of you who are still wet behind the ears as my persona puts it is a family in whole. The GMs are like your fathers and mothers while the rest of the player base is your brothers and sisters, they watch your char grow with joy and cry with you when your char falls for the last time. :D
As for the reason i am leaving. I have been overly busy with 2 of my life long friends running a star wars sim on a very infamous and rather misconceived game known as second life. before the flames come up and let loose unholy salvos of lag, sex, and other deprived things. I know, I have known and I try to ignore the bad and look at the good in it.Our sim has a very high ruling but is running at a mature rating for its guns, its a stupid little thing that has to be done in most if not all sims. (IE if you use guns on the sim you gotta give it a M rating, don't ask me why i didn't make Second life)
Its a full on role play sim that was created for the geeks of Star wars and if you want to swing by there, take a look or see what the old bugger Celgar would look like as a mandalorian Twi'lek let me know drop me a line under my name Celgar Hax and the sim name can be searched for as Manaan. Yes we do have people that play Selkath.

I have been here for 6+ years before there was an eastern server and the only way to get on was Pester Big L to open it or during an event.

I wish the holy machine spirits of of the servers that they run strong and long with out lag.

To my old friends I wish you the best of luck. to those i haven't met. Keep a good cleric by you at all times.

I think i shall make a nice RP reason why Celgar is gone here so keep an eye out.

General Discussion / Happy Birthday Leanthar!
« on: April 09, 2008, 06:17:30 pm »
Aaah... now that everyone else has done these sort of things before, I think it is my turn in this case! Still a little bit early due to the timezone things (it's a new day here, but not a new day there!)...

In either case, lets say a happy birthday to Leanthar. ;)

Just for Fun / Timely warning
« on: April 08, 2008, 07:04:00 pm »
Pseudo's Community Service of the Day

Are you SURE you're ready to have children??

Test 1 - Preparation

Women: To prepare for pregnancy:-

1. Put on a dressing gown and stick a beanbag down the front.
2. Leave it there.

3. After 9 months remove 5% of the beans.

Men: To prepare for children:-

1. Go to a local chemist, tip the contents of your wallet onto the counter and tell the pharmacist to help himself
2. Go to the supermarket. Arrange to have your salary paid directly to their head office.
3. Go home. Pick up the newspaper and read it for the last time.

Test 2 - Knowledge

Find a couple who are already parents and berate them about their methods of discipline, lack of patience, appallingly low tolerance levels and how they have allowed their children to run wild. Suggest ways in which they might improve their child's sleeping habits, toilet training, table manners and overall behavior.

Enjoy it. It will be the last time in your life that you will have all the answers.

Test 3 - Nights

To discover how the nights will feel:

1. Walk around the living room from 5pm to 10pm carrying a wet bag weighing approximately 4 - 6kg, with a radio turned to static (or some other obnoxious sound) playing loudly.
2. At 10pm, put the bag down, set the alarm for midnight and go to sleep.
3. Get up at 11pm and walk the bag around the living room until 1am.
4. Set the alarm for 3am.
5. As you can't get back to sleep, get up at 2am and make a cup of tea.
6. Go to bed at 2.45am.
7. Get up again at 3am when the alarm goes off.
8. Sing songs in the dark until 4am.
9. Put the alarm on for 5am. Get up when it goes off.
10. Make breakfast.

Keep this up for 5 years.

Test 4 - Dressing Small Children

1. Buy a live octopus and a string bag.
2. Attempt to put the octopus into the string bag so that no arms hang out.

Time Allowed: 5 minutes.

Test 5 - Cars

1. Forget the BMW. Buy a practical 5-door wagon.
2. Buy a chocolate ice cream cone and put it in the glove compartment. Leave it there.
3. Get a coin. Insert it into the CD player.
4. Take a box of chocolate biscuits; mash them into the back seat.
5. Run a garden rake along both sides of the car.

Test 6 - Going For a Walk

Wait
Go out the front door
Come back in again
Go out
Come back in again
Go out again
Walk down the front path
Walk back up it
Walk down it again
Walk very slowly down the road for five minutes.
Stop, inspect minutely and ask at least 6 questions about every piece of used chewing gum, dirty tissue and dead insect along the way.
Retrace your steps
Scream that you have had as much as you can stand until the neighbours come out and stare at you.
Give up and go back into the house.

You are now just about ready to try taking a small child for a walk.

Test 7

Repeat everything you say at least 5 times.

Test 8 - Grocery Shopping

1. Go to the local supermarket. Take with you the nearest thing you can find to a pre-school child - a fully grown goat is excellent. If you intend to have more than one child, take more than one goat.
2. Buy your weekly groceries without letting the goat(s) out of your sight.
3. Pay for everything the goat eats or destroys.

Until you can easily accomplish this, do not even contemplate having children.

Test 9 - Feeding a 1 year-old

1. Hollow out a melon
2. Make a small hole in the side
3. Suspend the melon from the ceiling and swing it side to side
4. Now get a bowl of soggy cornflakes and attempt to spoon them into the swaying melon while pretending to be an aeroplane.
5. Continue until half the cornflakes are gone.
6. Tip the rest into your lap, making sure that a lot of it falls on the floor.

Test 10 - TV

1. Learn the names of every character from the Wiggles, Barney, Teletubbies and Disney.
2. Watch nothing else on television for at least 5 years.

Test 11 - Mess

Can you stand the mess children make? To find out:

1. Smear peanut butter onto the sofa and jam onto the curtains
2. Hide a fish behind the stereo and leave it there all summer.
3. Stick your fingers in the flowerbeds and then rub them on clean walls. Cover the stains with crayon. How does that look?
4. Empty every drawer/cupboard/storage box in your house onto the floor & leave it there.

Test 12 - Long Trips with Toddlers

1. Make a recording of someone shouting 'Mummy' repeatedly. Important Notes: No more than a 4 second delay between each Mummy. Include occasional crescendo to the level of a supersonic jet.
2. Play this tape in your car, everywhere you go for the next 4 years.

You are now ready to take a long trip with a toddler.

Test 13 - Conversations

1. Start talking to an adult of your choice.
2. Have someone else continually tug on your shirt hem or shirt sleeve while playing the Mummy tape listed above.

You are now ready to have a conversation with an adult while there is a child in the room.

Test 14 - Getting ready for work

1. Pick a day on which you have an important meeting.
2. Put on your finest work attire.
3. Take a cup of cream and put 1 cup of lemon juice in it
4. Stir
5. Dump half of it on your nice silk shirt
6. Saturate a towel with the other half of the mixture
7. Attempt to clean your shirt with the same saturated towel
8. Do not change (you have no time).
9. Go directly to work

You are now ready to have children.

General Discussion / Wanted to Thank You all
« on: April 03, 2008, 10:35:23 pm »
Well when I started here, I knew nothing of the rp world.  I read everything slow and I typed even slower.  As time grew on, I like to belive I grew as an person and a player.

I was like this is to cool.  I can not belive this world and these people.  The GM's were great.  Heck I even remeber my first 3 day banned and only (I was a bad boy that did not read the rules and leveled in something I should not of) by L himself.  I could go on forevery about the Quest's.  The time it takes for the gm's, mind blowing.  The RP great, but I do like a bit of bashing.  Heck after all I am a fighter/cleric/undead slayer.

I can tell you this, I have learned to read faster and type faster with fewer mistakes.  My spelling has gotten a lot better, now I need to work on my grammer *belly laugh*.

I want to thank everyone here for everything it.  I can not wait to see the next verison.  I am sure it will be just as great.  I guess I just wanted to get this off my chest.

To the team for keeping up and keeping things interesting

and to the players who make this world a fun place to play in.

Just thought I'd drop in and see how things were going. It's been a long time since I was last here. Doubt any of you "new" people remember me, Vyris, Gulnyr, and Dragonsbane probably might remember me.

Any how, I might drop in some time though I think Weston is long gone by now. ((I can hear a sigh of relief from dwarves everywhere... I still think they have a racial ability to attract lightning bolts))

As for myself, I'm working hard as a Engineering Draftsman at a good company here in Phoenix.

Catch y'all later.

General Discussion / Thank you!
« on: March 12, 2008, 08:57:32 am »
I want to take a moment to thank all of the people involved in the last three updates over the past two weeks. There has been many long hours (I would be willing to bet at least a thousand) put in to these updates and it is clear their love for the world and community is what keeps them working on updates. The past six months have been extremlly packed with RL happenings, holidays, family issues, and the list goes on and yet these individuals continue to produce updates for the community.

There can not be enough thanks for them but I just want to make sure everybody understands that their selflessness is what continues to make the world a great gaming place that is enjoyed by many around the world.

 In no special order:
Gulnyr, muaddib, Chongo, Eorendil, Darkstorme, Weeblie, Script Wrecked, and Dorganth.

 Thank you and good job!!

I also want to thank everybody on the GM Team, now and in the past. I firmly believe that a major part of what makes Layonara so special is the GM Team and all of the events they run and all of the difficult work they do behind the scenes (online and off) in order to ensure that Layonara remains a RP server at heart. Your efforts do not go unnoticed and it is your attention to the spirit of the server which is what continues to make Layonara loved by many.

Thanks folks, to each and every one of you!

And of course, thank you to the community! What a great RP community.

 You rock!

Introduce Yourself / An old player is back
« on: March 09, 2008, 05:00:23 am »
Where to start ?

The name is Thierry  living in Lille, France. My age? ;)certainly a lot more than many players, actually 43.

My first pen & paper RPG experience was during my last year at university, nearly 20 years ago. After 10 years of player experience and some DM experience I stoppped RPGs, that's not easy to keep eyes open at work after fantastic but sleepless night or weekend.

How many Layonara player knows Wizardry ? I remind many nights on this simple graphic, single dungeon, first computer RPG like game. And many others like the Bard's tale, Ultima, Might & Magic, NWN etc...

In 2004, I wished to join a NWN online server, a friend of mine told me of Layonara as a reference. At this time I had so much fun here and sleeplees night that one day I was nearly asleep on my desk, I left layonara for a French speaking NWN server in 2006; where I had some good roleplay time. When this server stopped; I tried the popular World of W, where clearly roleplaying is close to nil. After WoW, lack of time keep me far from any online game for nearly 1 year.

Some weeks ago after a former Layoplayer informed me of his wish to come back. I looked for my NWN CDs, reinstall everything and logon. I saw with a great pleasure that Layonara atmosphere, which make it unique, hasn't changed; even if the world change a lot. A thousand thanks to the team for the astonishing job they do. My first Layo character is running again trough Mistone and is going to continue for a while. Till he will be seasoned enough for more dangerous place.

Now, I haven't as much time as 3 years ago for online gaming. My job in an international retail company make me travelling frequently in the UK, which is very good for my English, and seldomly in Far East.

Finally, please forgive my English (and my typewriting)  keep in mind that I need more time to understand you and sometimes my Francais/English dictionary help.

See you in game. :)

General Discussion / A Slice of Life
« on: February 26, 2008, 12:12:09 pm »
I've always thought of Layonara as a never ending movie where we the players get to puppeteer the stars, but what does puppeteer really mean? Well, I believe that when one plays a character, regardless of how much effort is put in, we are exhibiting characteristics of our own mind, personality and soul. There is so much depth to every single one of us that is often left completely undiscovered. Some people prefer to not explore themselves and so we only get to witness a sliver of their true self but the ones that do explore are often the ones that pour themselves into their RP and do so over the course of more than one character.

While we all tend to act differently in RL than our characters IG, even in RL we are playing the role of our real lives with real stakes at hand. This is why RL Always Comes First.

While Layonara is Just a Game there is none-the-less a bond that's seeded, nurtured and grown through the life we breathe into our characters. I like to think of this bond being represented by the 10 Soul Strands. When a character is first created, the bond is fresh, new and full. As we explore the world through the shoes of the character we're able to learn about ourselves in ways not available to RL. We are given the opportunity to explore the truth and consequences of our actions in a setting where when it really boils down to it, there's absolutely nothing to loose and everything to gain because it really is Just a Game.

As the strands wilt over time [be it short or long] we are all hit personally with that pang in the chest and burning of the heart. We are tangibly loosing a slice of that bond between our heart and our alternate self; the character. Having that bond broken by a permanent death will inevitably impact the RL self to some degree. Sometimes the break can be so extreme as to bring one to the point of rejecting the mere thought of allowing one's self to grow another bond. This is natural, we are only human and our hearts can bleed in more ways than one.

However, we must always remember that with each and every permanent death; a void is born in the world and a new chapter in the history of Layonara is waiting to be opened. Regardless of how big or small the chapter is, there is a new slice of your self just waiting to be given the chance to see the first light of a new Layonaran day. Rejoice in the accomplishments of the past slices, learn from their mistakes... where there was an avenue blocked from your exploration due to alignment or other RP restrictions, perhaps now that avenue can be explored through a new slice of life in Layonara.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with maintaining the characteristics of a past slice in the new personality. In fact, I'd highly encourage it. Take the best aspects of every character you've ever played and imbue them into a new one. Inevitably this will cause a new mix of experiences which bring out new traits you'd never even thought of before.

Now, don't get me wrong, I'm speaking for myself and I'm not trying to hype Layonara up or push anyone to continue playing when they in fact do not wish to do so. All that I want to do with this posting is to share with you all how I feel about the inherent impermanence within the realm of Layonara. It forces us to come to terms with emotional transitions in-game that mimic similar emotional cycles and transitions found in real life but in such a way that allows us to adapt [and / or harden] ourselves to the realities of real life in a positive and relatively risk-free environment. I've always loved D&D of old for this and in our modern day D&D has given way to learning opportunities on a massive scale with the advent of multiplayer RP games.

Hoping this made sense to someone out there,
OneST8

General Discussion / Thanks and good wishes to Aragon
« on: February 25, 2008, 04:53:07 pm »
I'm not sure if Aragon made it a point of leaving in relative peace, but last night he came online to IRC to bid adieu to some of the team members until September as he ships out to serve his country.

If it were his intentions to simply fade away without any fanfare then I apologize to him, but I felt a showing of community support was deserved and could not let it pass.

Thank you very much for your efforts and hard work for the community and the future of Layonara Aragon and get back safely, we're going to be needing you again.

If you wish to share your well wishes of a safe and speedy return and thoughts for him, please do so without turning this into any sort of political debate.

Get home safe Chuck!
