General Discussion / Congratulations ...
« on: July 25, 2008, 10:58:52 am »
... to Layonara's newest World Leader, Sallaron Tempest!

Yes, you read that right.

Administrative error?
GM team oversight?
Leanthar going soft in his old age?
Lowering standards?
Plain dumb luck?

Probably a combination of all the above. :)

Congrats LordCove!

NWN Ideas, Suggestions, Requests / Craftable Items in drops
« on: July 24, 2008, 12:57:31 pm »
I'm sure this has been discussed before but thought I would bring it up again..

Taken from his thread to not over take it...

pawn shop limit per character and not overall limit.

What are the chances of removing all craftable items from drops?

It seems it would help the crafters and guilds to be able to actually sell things again if they were removed.  Like LordCove said.. it takes so much to make a yew longbow of the hunter... then for it to be common to find them in drops is very frustrating.  It is not rare to find diamond ability rings, rare leather amours and high end weapons.  It would be better to find a uncut diamond or a nugget of
mithril, a branch of yew etc.

Rumour Has It / In Memorial of Shiff Dragonheart
« on: July 21, 2008, 06:35:17 pm »
Word goes out quietly and with invitations to friends of the Dragonhearts of a small memorial service being held in Haven.  Shiff's remains will be interred on the hillside overlooking the town and the family Shiff worked so hard to protect during his life.  Those wishing to remember Shiff are invited to do so.

Shiff's armor and helm have been placed in a stone casket set in the ground, arranged in a manner recalling how they were worn in life.  Laying the length of the armor is Shiff's greatsword.  The arms and gauntlets of the armor have been placed on the hilt of the weapon, as if Shiff were holding the sword against his chest.

Val stands off to one side of the casket, supported on her left by her father.  Standing at the head of the casket is thirteen-year-old Drakus, feeling both important and scared.  He is holding an urn containing the ashes of his father, Shiff.  Val, refusing to cry, stands quietly, occassionally turning to speak quietly with her father.

After waiting a short while for those in attendance to settle, Val steps forward slightly to speak.  Her voice, none too pleasant to begin with, is noticeably rougher than usual, but is still strong and she is clearly heard.

"I'm not much for ceremonies, but I have a few words I'd like to say.  Shiff Dragonheart was a good man.  He was a strong man, a dependable man, a firm man, one who could be depended on, a loving man, and a protector.  He was a man who I always knew would support me.  Shiff was strong willed, unyielding in the face of adversity, and a man who worked tirelessly to accomplish good."

Looking upwards, Val continues: "Shiff, we are proud of you, and will remember you always.  As you kept us safe, we will keep your memory safe."

She takes on a slightly more formal tone:
"Under the wide and starry sky,
Dig the grave and let me lie.
Glad did I live and gladly die,
And I laid me down with a will!

This be the verse you grave for me:
Here he lies where he longed to be;
Home is the sailor, home from the sea,
And the hunter home from the hill.
"
As she speaks the verses, her voice gets rougher and breaks several times on the last few lines.  Clearly barely able to contain her emotions, she says in a voice so quiet, even those in the front can barely hear her. "Shiff... you're finally home."

She steps back to her father, and he puts a comforting arm around her.  After a bit, when it seems clear she is too distraught to continue, her father moves towards Drakus, but Val reaches out a hand and stops him, quietly murmuring "I'll do it."  She reverently takes the urn from Drakus, setting it carefully under the breast of Shiff's armor.  The family then steps back, allowing others the opportunity to pay their last respects to Shiff Dragonheart.

Wild Surge Inn / Raven Trade Compagny Friendship Trip #3
« on: July 11, 2008, 05:55:10 pm »
* A post is tacked up on the message boards across various Inns Taverns and otherwise visited places by adventures *

The Raven Trade Compagny have decided to begin to host a series of gatherings, meant to illuminate and educate the infrequent adventurer in the dangers of the world. These gatherings will show and demonstrate the tenacity and sheer determination that all adventures are born with to survive. This is the third of such gatherings.

We hope that these trips will serve as a breeding ground for new friendships across the races and beliefs. Everyone is welcome to meet and talk with us near Stormcrest Crossroads.

A such gathering is held here: Raven Trade Compagny Friendship Trip

There are no rules for any person wanting to join this trip. Where we go will be dependant on the youngest adventure being with us. Maybee we will just talk, maybee we will seek dark dungeons. Its up to you to come here and tell us what you want.

Resources and items of value will be determined by need before greed. No items gained from these trips, are allowed to be sold/traded for profital use, and no resources will be given to people without a need for it.

If you have any questions, suggestions or comments, feel free to send a bird to me.

Just for Fun / Life tips
« on: July 10, 2008, 08:27:29 am »
Another public service announcement. I know we have quite a few young players and I honestly believe the Layo forums can be a valuable medium for imparting these important life lessons.

GAMBLERS: For a new gambling opportunity, try sending $50 to yourself by the Postal service.

EMPLOYERS: Avoid hiring unlucky people by immediately tossing half the CVs into the bin.

HOME MAINTENANCE: You only need two tools in life - WD-40 and duct tape. If it doesn't move and should, use the WD-40. If it shouldn't move and does, use the duct tape.

MEN: When listening to your favourite CD, simply turn up the sound to the volume you desire - then turn it down three notches. This saves your wife having to do it.

DRIVERS: Avoid getting prosecuted for using your phone while driving. Simply pop your mobile inside a large shell and the police will think you are listening to the sea.

HOME IMPROVEMENTS: If it doesn't fit - get a bigger hammer.

CINEMA GOERS: Have consideration for pirate DVD viewers by using the toilet before the film starts.

DRIVERS: If a car breaks down or stalls in front of you, beep your horn and wave your arms frantically. This should help the car start and send them on their way.

RAPPERS: Avoid having to say: "Know what I'm sayin'?" all the time by actually speaking clearly in the first place.

SINGLE MEN: Convince people you have a girlfriend by standing outside department stores with bags of shopping, looking at your watch and occasionally glancing inside.

SCROOGES: Save money at Christmas by returning last year's cards to the sender with the simple inscription "Same to you".

SHOPPERS: Take one grape to the till. It won't register on the low-tech, insensitive scales so you will get it for free. Repeat this procedure 100 times or so and you have yourself a free bunch of grapes.

COLD: If you have a bad cough, take a large dose of laxatives. Then you'll be afraid to cough.

CYCLISTS: Avoid getting a sore behind by simply placing a Naan bread over your saddle. This will comfort your ride and when you return home, hey presto - a warm snack!

HOME MAINTENANCE: If you can't fix it with a hammer, you've got an electrical problem.

YOUNG MOTHERS: Calm hysterically crying children in the supermarket by firmly slapping their legs and then tugging them along by the wrist.

FEMALE SHOP ASSISTANTS: When a garage mechanic comes to your till, add on a selection of random items they didn't know they needed and charge them $50 labour costs for the transaction.

Rumour Has It / R.I.P. Hilda VonAxeweilder
« on: June 30, 2008, 07:28:46 am »
Today at approximately 3am Day 18 Month 12, Hilda fought her last battle.  She fought valiantly in the MIsted Village alongside an aquaintance, Leisa, however the bandits surrounded them and they both fell.  Hilda never to return again.

A memorial service will be held within the next week.  **see player's calandar for details**  All those who have fought side by side with Hilda are invited to attend at the Ulgrid's temple to Vorax.

General Discussion / I would just like to say.
« on: June 25, 2008, 05:10:30 pm »
Hello everyone, I'm rather new here, infact..  I am still waiting on a character submission to be accepted and even though I haven't played yet I would like to commend everyone and anyone that had a hand in creating Layonara.

The amount of explicit detail that you guys put in to this world is astronomical.  The systems that are/were developed are amazing.. and the fact that you have gone to such lengths to ensure that everyone has a clear image of what Layonara is.. is mind blowing.

Kudos to every single one of you, as well as to the GM's that work hard to maintain the level playing field and the environment.  You guys obviously work very hard at what you do, and don't ask anything from anyone.

Just my two Cents.

Wild Surge Inn / The Raven Trade Compagny Danger Adventure
« on: June 16, 2008, 04:20:54 am »
* A post is tacked up on the message boards across various Inns Taverns and otherwise visited places by adventures *

The Raven Trade Compagny have decided to begin to host a series of gatherings, meant to illuminate and educate the infrequent adventurer in the dangers of the world. These gatherings will show and demonstrate the tenacity and sheer determination that all adventures are born with.

We hope that these trips will serve as a breeding ground for new friendships across the races and beliefs.

A such first gathering is held here: Raven Trade Compagny Danger Adventure

 Now a few small rules:

Because of the destinations travelled, the Ravens will hold the right to deny people if they are acting reckless or if they are otherwise known to cause danger to people.

As a result hereof, the experience of the person needs to be abit higher than we normally expect of the average adventurer. We expect you to be atleast of season 21 or greater.

Resources and items of value will be determined by need before greed. No items gained from these trips, are allowed to be sold for profital use, and no resources will be given to people without a need for it.

Lin'da Sul'kolindo on behalf of the Raven Trade Compagny.

// These rules are in to protect you the player, against certain death and/or SS loss. We are not trying to limit anyones access to these events, but we can not with good conscience bring a level 20 with 9 SS lost. At level 21 you will atleast have had a chance to remedy this with the SMD feat.

Also if RP is not initiated by the player either IG or with a letter, you will not be invited along, its as simple as that.

If you have any questions, suggestions or comments, feel free to PM me.

General Discussion / Missing portals? read this
« on: May 27, 2008, 05:08:09 am »
Weary traverler (Mariners hold):

If you find that the portal is not in the first locked room on the right of the bar. Go out and close the door. Now walk to the right side of the building, you will see a door there. Use it. Once you did that, go back inside, buy a new key, and go back to the first locked door at the right side of the bar. Voila!

Orcs Bashers shop (Hempstead):

The same principle applies, close the door, then go to the Alurial district. Turn left after coming out of the At and access the first door you meet. Once that is done, go back inside the Orc Bashers shop and Voila!

General Discussion / It's time
« on: May 21, 2008, 04:26:57 pm »
t probably comes as no surprise to anyone in here, but it's time for me to face up to it and step down as a GM :(

I've been putting it off for a pretty long time now, largely kidding myself that things would work out so that I could pick up the reins again, but it isn't to be.

Some of you will be aware, that great Demon, "Real Life" has been relentless in its attack. If you include travelling, I now seem to work an average 55 hour week. Add in childcare and all those family-type responsibilities, and I've not even had time to play in what seems like forever - nevermind put a quest together. To top it all, my Boss (no, not DMOE - the other Boss) has now decided that I need to be fully qualified to "Enterprise level" in Windows Server 2008 by the end of the year. Combined with the exam I still need to achieve 2003 Security Specialist, that adds a serious amount of study to my so-called "free time". Ho Hum.

May I take a moment to thank L in particular, and indeed all of the team for the fun times and the support. And thanks to you - the players; without whom the quests would have been pretty dull!

There's been some fun times!

I don't plan on quitting Layo.  Darn it, I swore that Ell would make WL one day! ;)

See you all on the flipside, as soon as I get chance, an as often as I can

General Discussion / Done.
« on: May 10, 2008, 01:24:21 pm »
I have a master's degree. Got the piece of paper yesterday, after sitting very bored through a two hour ceremony in a robe with sleeve-wings.

I think my family was more happy than I was.

And now it's back to an 8-5.

On the upside, I'll be more consistent with Layo time now. :p

P.S. To those on the "Reveal the Storm" quest, see the layo server forums. I finally got a post in there, and yes, I pretty much just woke up.

General Discussion / Essrantor's Veil Quest Announced
« on: May 03, 2008, 01:44:15 am »
WELCOME TO THE QUEST SERIES: ESSRANTOR'S VEIL

For the past several weeks, a group of several GM's have been working with the writing team and lore experts to develop a quest series that would impact the lands you travel on Layonara. This series contains 11 individual quests, which are tied intricately to each other, hinging on each other's success.

The quest will begin with the High Boyer designating his esteemed counciler for war, Raker Estoum, to put forth the call of aid in a time of impending threat. The quest begins with that alone, an audience with one of the most highly respected individuals in the Boyer Kingdom at Boyer's Fort.

This quest will impact the world around you. It will play upon developing plotlines, and at it's conclusion - the lands of the Boyer Kingdom will face the changes that have sprung from your own efforts. It will require wit, perseverance, teamwork, and sacrifice from all the players involved.

So how does this work?

There are 11 quests in this series. They will occur next week at varying times that allow for attendance in all timezones. The introductory quest will cause several groups with different tasks to split up. This feeds into the other quests.

The separate quests will involve the groups designated to the task, and that group will be time bubbled in that lone plotline.

You can not attend quests that are outside your designated group.

There are three major branches to the quest, and in each below, you will see that the quests are each designated to a specific branch. This is the progression of each branch in all of it's quest segments.

There are three Finale's to this series, all feeding time bubbled repercussions of each success or failure from the other branches. While some are oriented towards higher levels, and other lower levels... the nature of the series is that every quest branch is critical towards the success of the series. They are all tied together, and if one branch fails, dire consequence faces the others.

So all participants be aware - your actions count.

Each GM will be posting their quests on the Calender shortly. There may be some minor changes to times or days, so be flexible with your GMs. Sign up accordingly, and find a series or branch that seems right for you, or strikes the right chord for you. They have some vague details attached, and we'll be working with all of you to assure that everyone finds a home.

The introductory quest will create many of the groups, so prepare for flexibility in this as well. And yes, if you can't attend the introduction, there is opportunity to still join in.

The GM's that can help answer questions are those running or helping run each segment of this series:

- Chongo

- Miltonyorkcastle

- Osxmallard

- Jrizz

- Mixafix

- Makashi

- Darkstorme

- Tanman

From afar, the High Boyer looks from his window to think upon the view his eyes behold. The time for a battle of ages has come.

Wild Surge Inn / ** Voon Loom, Cleric of Beryl have passed away **
« on: April 11, 2008, 05:36:53 pm »
* The title draws you neared to the parchment that have been sat up on the most common places of worship in the lands and major inns. *

Cleric of Beryl Voon Loom have passed away this Sunra, Junar 1, 1431. He was carried by Kobal Bluntaxe on his shield, and followed suit by the very people He to the end protected with his death.

His deeds will be remembered, and his sacrifice to his beliefs and the city of Stone. Stone a city that were rebuild from being under the occupation of Bloodstones forces, with pure determination because of Voon's unselfish donations and tireless efforts. This city will be he resting place in his death. He leaves his only family, his brother Boon.

I urge everyone that have known him, to write here to celebrate a new chapter in his life, a place where he can do as much good, as he did here on Layonara with us, his friends.

Rest in Piece old friend.

Just for Fun / Timely warning

Pseudo's Community Service of the Day

Are you SURE you're ready to have children??

Test 1 - Preparation

Women: To prepare for pregnancy:-

1. Put on a dressing gown and stick a beanbag down the front.
2. Leave it there.

3. After 9 months remove 5% of the beans.

Men: To prepare for children:-

1. Go to a local chemist, tip the contents of your wallet onto the counter and tell the pharmacist to help himself
2. Go to the supermarket. Arrange to have your salary paid directly to their head office.
3. Go home. Pick up the newspaper and read it for the last time.

Test 2 - Knowledge

Find a couple who are already parents and berate them about their methods of discipline, lack of patience, appallingly low tolerance levels and how they have allowed their children to run wild. Suggest ways in which they might improve their child's sleeping habits, toilet training, table manners and overall behavior.

Enjoy it. It will be the last time in your life that you will have all the answers.

Test 3 - Nights

To discover how the nights will feel:

1. Walk around the living room from 5pm to 10pm carrying a wet bag weighing approximately 4 - 6kg, with a radio turned to static (or some other obnoxious sound) playing loudly.
2. At 10pm, put the bag down, set the alarm for midnight and go to sleep.
3. Get up at 11pm and walk the bag around the living room until 1am.
4. Set the alarm for 3am.
5. As you can't get back to sleep, get up at 2am and make a cup of tea.
6. Go to bed at 2.45am.
7. Get up again at 3am when the alarm goes off.
8. Sing songs in the dark until 4am.
9. Put the alarm on for 5am. Get up when it goes off.
10. Make breakfast.

Keep this up for 5 years.

Test 4 - Dressing Small Children

1. Buy a live octopus and a string bag.
2. Attempt to put the octopus into the string bag so that no arms hang out.

Time Allowed: 5 minutes.

Test 5 - Cars

1. Forget the BMW. Buy a practical 5-door wagon.
2. Buy a chocolate ice cream cone and put it in the glove compartment. Leave it there.
3. Get a coin. Insert it into the CD player.
4. Take a box of chocolate biscuits; mash them into the back seat.
5. Run a garden rake along both sides of the car.

Test 6 - Going For a Walk

Wait
Go out the front door
Come back in again
Go out
Come back in again
Go out again
Walk down the front path
Walk back up it
Walk down it again
Walk very slowly down the road for five minutes.
Stop, inspect minutely and ask at least 6 questions about every piece of used chewing gum, dirty tissue and dead insect along the way.
Retrace your steps
Scream that you have had as much as you can stand until the neighbours come out and stare at you.
Give up and go back into the house.

You are now just about ready to try taking a small child for a walk.

Test 7

Repeat everything you say at least 5 times.

Test 8 - Grocery Shopping

1. Go to the local supermarket. Take with you the nearest thing you can find to a pre-school child - a fully grown goat is excellent. If you intend to have more than one child, take more than one goat.
2. Buy your weekly groceries without letting the goat(s) out of your sight.
3. Pay for everything the goat eats or destroys.

Until you can easily accomplish this, do not even contemplate having children.

Test 9 - Feeding a 1 year-old

1. Hollow out a melon
2. Make a small hole in the side
3. Suspend the melon from the ceiling and swing it side to side
4. Now get a bowl of soggy cornflakes and attempt to spoon them into the swaying melon while pretending to be an aeroplane.
5. Continue until half the cornflakes are gone.
6. Tip the rest into your lap, making sure that a lot of it falls on the floor.

Test 10 - TV

1. Learn the names of every character from the Wiggles, Barney, Teletubbies and Disney.
2. Watch nothing else on television for at least 5 years.

Test 11 - Mess

Can you stand the mess children make? To find out:

1. Smear peanut butter onto the sofa and jam onto the curtains
2. Hide a fish behind the stereo and leave it there all summer.
3. Stick your fingers in the flowerbeds and then rub them on clean walls. Cover the stains with crayon. How does that look?
4. Empty every drawer/cupboard/storage box in your house onto the floor & leave it there.

Test 12 - Long Trips with Toddlers

1. Make a recording of someone shouting 'Mummy' repeatedly. Important Notes: No more than a 4 second delay between each Mummy. Include occasional crescendo to the level of a supersonic jet.
2. Play this tape in your car, everywhere you go for the next 4 years.

You are now ready to take a long trip with a toddler.

Test 13 - Conversations

1. Start talking to an adult of your choice.
2. Have someone else continually tug on your shirt hem or shirt sleeve while playing the Mummy tape listed above.

You are now ready to have a conversation with an adult while there is a child in the room.

Test 14 - Getting ready for work

1. Pick a day on which you have an important meeting.
2. Put on your finest work attire.
3. Take a cup of cream and put 1 cup of lemon juice in it
4. Stir
5. Dump half of it on your nice silk shirt
6. Saturate a towel with the other half of the mixture
7. Attempt to clean your shirt with the same saturated towel
8. Do not change (you have no time).
9. Go directly to work

You are now ready to have children.

General Discussion / Wanted to Thank You all
« on: April 03, 2008, 10:35:23 pm »
Well when I started here, I knew nothing of the rp world.  I read everything slow and I typed even slower.  As time grew on, I like to belive I grew as an person and a player.

I was like this is to cool.  I can not belive this world and these people.  The GM's were great.  Heck I even remeber my first 3 day banned and only (I was a bad boy that did not read the rules and leveled in something I should not of) by L himself.  I could go on forevery about the Quest's.  The time it takes for the gm's, mind blowing.  The RP great, but I do like a bit of bashing.  Heck after all I am a fighter/cleric/undead slayer.

I can tell you this, I have learned to read faster and type faster with fewer mistakes.  My spelling has gotten a lot better, now I need to work on my grammer *belly laugh*.

I want to thank everyone here for everything it.  I can not wait to see the next verison.  I am sure it will be just as great.  I guess I just wanted to get this off my chest.

*waves*
