Ancients Legacy / OOC: Plot GMs, Contacts and Information« on: October 03, 2014, 05:29:03 pm »
All,For the purposes of the main plot events, the responsible GMs are myself (Dorganath) and Rowana. We are co-running this plot and coordinating all events within. We are also having a few GMs help out with various events here and there. When it comes to overall plot-related actions and inquiries and a PM is appropriate, please direct those to Dorganath and Rowana. If you forget and only send to one of us, it's no big deal as we're sharing all infomation and inquiries between us.When it comes to questions and clarifications on events that are handled by one of the other GMs, please direct your questions to them first.Of course, posting on the Ancients Legacy forum is equally appropriate and the applicable GM will respond in whatever way is appropriate. Please note that plot-related posts made elsewhere may not get the attention it deserves. If there are any questions about this, please ask below.

Layonara Server / New Plot - please read« on: December 17, 2014, 10:24:57 pm »
Thank you all again for your collective expression of interest in the upcoming plot. This is going to start very soon, if all goes well, and we have one other question for you all, or perhaps a better term is an “election.”For this plot series, there exists a very real probability of character alteration in a seemingly small but actually quite important way. What is the nature of this potential alteration? We're not saying right now, however we'll give the following information:
So essentially, there is a risk/reward mechanic at work here, and by taking the risk associated with this potential change, the chance of a greater reward and/or more significant role exists. What we're going to do is give every player who will/may be involved with the plot quest series to opt out of this potential alteration. This is to say, if you do not wish for your character to be altered for story reasons that do not stem from your own actions on the quests, please indicate below by simply stating that you opt out, and we will exclude you from being included in the list of potentially-altered characters. We will repeat this request at the first quest session, and anyone who joins into the plot after it starts will be given the same option. Everyone will get to change their minds one time, meaning one can opt-out but change one's mind later (though that is no guarantee of character alteration) or do the opposite (opt out sometime in the middle of the plot), but one cannot keep going back and forth between the choices. For those who have not opted out, whether or not your character becomes altered will be determined by the roll of dice, so even deciding not to opt out is no guarantee one's character will be changed in some way. We are simply seeking to avoid any misunderstandings and hard feelings as the result of an unwanted breach of the so-called “Golden Box”.Please indicate below only if you will be participating in the plot quest series and you wish to opt out of any plot-related character alteration. Just for Fun / Cool video my nephew did of our vacation at my parents house in Anna Maria Isle this July 4th« on: July 15, 2014, 09:15:28 pm »
Hi all,I thought this go-pro video my nephew Ryan put together was pretty awesome. It's taken in Anna Maria, FL where my parents live and we had a little vacation there this 4th of July. We brought our boat over. In the video are my nephews Ryan 19 (blonde short hair), Austin 17 (tallest with color striped shorts), John 14 (green shirt), and Daniel 13 (dark hair with wavy bangs). Obviously Bill and I are there but good luck telling us apart because we're twins. Bill is wearing mostly the yellow patterned shorts and sometimes white shirt and I wore black shorts and some short grey ones and sometimes black racing shirt. I hope you enjoy it; its about 25 mins long.Davidhoff Here's the link:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v9LgVpXepzY

Layonara Server / GM breaks and player bonuses« on: June 01, 2014, 12:49:40 am »
Greetings all!As summer is nearly upon us, we would like to announce a couple of things that will be happening over the next couple of months. For starters, beginning on June 1st, the GM team as a whole will be taking breaks. These breaks are voluntary, and we're placing no requirements on people to do so or for how long their breaks will last. The point of this is to let our GMs refresh, take time, and have a period where they are not being held to the responsibilities and expectations of being a member of the GM team. This is something that used to happen with some regularity, but we managed to get out of the habit. This oversight has taken a toll on some GMs. For others, just having a break will be a nice breather, while others may take advantage of the time for summer activities, vacations and time spent with family. The nature of these breaks is that, firstly, they are completely voluntary, though they are also strongly encouraged. GMs are free to take advantage of time off at any time during this period, as many times as they wish and for as long as they wish. For you, the community, this may translate into seeing fewer quests on the calendar during this time. As for the overall duration, this will last until at least the end of July, possibly into August for at least one of our GMs. On the other side of this break period, it is our plan to put the finishing touches on planning for a new plot quest series.I do want to mention that despite these rolling breaks, there will be a GM presence, if no other place than the forums and IRC. If anyone needs help, has a question or whatever, someone should be available to lend assistance.Having said all this, during the same time (June 1-July 31), I will set up the servers with XP and Fortune bonuses as well as gold (and possibly loot) bonuses. As an added benefit, I am throwing in one additional bonus:For this period of time, no Soul Strands will be cut. This is not an IC thing, so like the last time when I kept it a secret, it should not be acknowledged in-character or in-game at all. I of course request also that it is not used as a license to be reckless or exploitive. The key purpose in this is to let people have fun and not worry about character loss.So there it is. Enjoy!

General Discussion / Another note of absence« on: April 10, 2014, 03:05:31 pm »
Well the time has finally come for me to grow up and actually finish my education. After having spent 9 years in Aarhus I am finally due to hand in my thesis and go out into the world. I am turning it in the 30th of this month so I wont be around too much before that.Secondly when I have -finallly- turned that in I have two weeks empty my appartment and say goodbye to my friends, as I am flying out to Japan the 15th of May to start my new life as a postdoctoral researcher. So I will be without a computer to run NWN on at least for the first bit of time. If you need to contact me though I am available through pm.

Layonara Server / Bonus event -- Nov. 29 - Dec. 1« on: November 23, 2013, 12:31:04 pm »
Greetings! We're going to hold a bonus event next weekend starting sometime on Friday, November 29, 2013 and ending sometime late on Sunday, December 1, 2013.During this time combat kill XP will be 50% higher and everyone will earn Fortune at twice the normal rate. On top of this, XP or Fortune handed out by GMs for quests and/or RP will likewise be doubled.I know this is short notice, and I know it is a holiday weekend for the US, and so we are not setting any expectations for our GMs to have events planned during this time. In fact, we are encouraging them to take advantage of the bonus period by playing their characters. If you miss out on this one, don't worry! We'll be having at 1-2 more before the end of the year.Enjoy!

As some of you might have noticed Storold hasn't been around, probably ever since the forums vent offline really... The reason is that Storolds bottompusher is currently not at home, so he doesn't have access to a computer which will run nwn or time to play with all the amazing people at the moment. Right now I am on my change of research enviroment tour, which has taken me to Wako Sataima prefecture in Japan. For those who do not want to consult google/wikipeadia about the location of this place I can inform you that it is in what most westerners would probably just call Tokyo Although as I learned that is actually a rather geographically limited area compared to what I previous thought was Tokyo city. Hopefully I will be able to return to tell more stories from Storolds bench in november when I am back in Denmark. So everyone stay safe until then and don't do something that Storold wouldn't do

General Discussion / Welcome back!« on: February 29, 2016, 10:54:39 am »It's been a little while! For some of us this has been the longest we've been separated from the Layo website for a very long time! We hope everyone got by alright in the mean time with our limited forms of communication. For those of you just getting the details of what happened and why we were out so long here's the event in a nutshell: A few weeks ago the hard drive that housed all the data for the website, IRC and a few other aspects of Layonara suffered a critical failure. Evaluation of the drive later revealed that the drive suffered physical damage to the drive itself, and the failure wasn't just a matter of corruption or some other kind of software malfunction, as we're probably used to seeing. When this kind of thing happens, it becomes very difficult to retrieve any data. To compound matters, because the site was still being adjusted, off-server backups were not up to where they needed to be. A poll/pledge was taken via social media from the community as a whole, as to whether or not we should attempt to have the drive rebuilt and the data retrieval attempted, given the steep expense associated with such an effort. This was met with a pretty resounding 'meh'; the community seemed willing to help if the cause was important, but since the data lost was mostly in forum posts, no one seemed particularly anxious about getting that data back. This is an absolutely fine decision and as such we have rebuilt the site from our last save point. As an aside, it was asked earlier on via social media, whether or not any MMO data/work had been lost as well. We just want to reassure everyone that all of the MMO data that was stored on the same server was actually well backed up and none has been lost. This repository has since been restored. The NWN servers and all their data were unaffected. The bulk of the loss was suffered by the community in posts and our frequently used services. Several months of posts were lost, but in truth, it could have been much worse. The latest backup seems to have brought us forward to early March (though the back up is listed with an April date for us). This means there will be a lot of necessary reworking on our parts as well as yours. We want to note a few things for you to keep in mind that will help us all get back to normalcy as soon as possible. First of all, there are a lot of tweaks done to the site previously that need re-doing, and as such you may see some slower load times, slower responses all together and things of this nature. Not all functions may be fully operational, and some things that existed before the crash may be missing. All of this really will be a process of adjusting will probably happen over many months (just like our original switch-overs from previous versions of our website) until we feel like it's as good as it can get. The immediate difference was noticed last time by the community when we moved over, so we wanted to point that out now to remind folks that this part will take some time. As mentioned above, we have some other features that were lost or crippled in the data loss. The most noticeable of this is likely to be the NWN character imports though we are hoping to restore them in the near future. Right now we can't make any promises or give an estimated time frame, but we -are- hoping that the replacement coding will be finished soon. Everyone is working very hard in their available time to get things back to what we have become used to as 'the basics', and so that we can start moving forward into progress once again! Another really notable issue is the loss of character applications/approvals during the time covered by the lost data. As was mentioned before, we're not going to rescind the approval of these characters but we need them resubmitted as soon as possible. We'll try to push those applications through as fast as possible so that it's no longer a concern for anyone. If you're unsure if youre character(s) might be affected, please do a quick search of the approved characters and see if your character is listed there with an approval. We will also be getting a list from the database to contact people directly but anyone who can get the process started sooner would be greatly appreciated. Please note somewhere in the top of your biography that you are re-approving when you submit! More information will be available on this topic in a later post but here is no need to wait if you happen to have a copy of the application saved and ready to post up. So onto the other side of all that happened... We did move our hosting services of the website server, which splits the website and NWN servers to two different places. IceDragonDuvessa was able to help us negotiate a great price on a dedicated server where she works with good services, data redundancy and online backups to protect us from a future catastrophic loss as we just experienced. As well, we've developed a better plan for the leadership team side of things to further protect us from potential losses, which we hope will mitigate the complications from any future event as much as possible. For those of you who used the IRC service, it is back on-line as well. Everyone who has access to special, team-related channels will have to re-register their nicknames, as the IRC server had to be rebuilt from scratch. Remember that the command for registering is: /msg NickServ REGISTER <password> <email> (changing the relevant details). Here is the basic information you'll need to get reset up if you need it. It probably goes without saying you should not share your password if you do not wish to share your handle. Anyone with needs for permissions in special channels (Ex. GMs) will need to register their handle before permissions can be granted. Once you have registered please /query Dorganath and let him know who you are (if necessary). You will need to do this for your alternate handle if you need for that handle to also have permissions to restricted or private channels (such as a log in from a work address). People who do not need permissions are not required to have their handles registered, though you are more than welcome to lock them down via registration. Two really important notes! First, if you have your log in to Layonara's IRC channel set to auto log in, and you auto-log into permissioned channels before you have necessary permission, the server will ban you from those channels and Dorganath will have to release you from ban before the invite to special channels can happen. This will not stop you from registering nor logging into the main NWN channel, but keep in mind the process may take a few minutes depending on what Dorganath is doing at the moment. Secondly, make sure that when you initiate a query to him to handle permissions and/or ban problems, that you have a good amount of time available to wait, just in case! If people log in and ask for permissions and log out before response is made, we can't help you. In other news, related to our return to the website: We'd like to make sure that you have had a chance to read our thread on the new Fortune System found here. This goes over in detail what the system does, how it works and some up coming additions we have planned for it's use. Additionally there is an FAQ going up for this system soon so please feel free to ask questions over there so we might build a better guide in the long run. One more thing: We should all thank Dorganath, Orth and OneSt8 for the tremendous amount of work over the last few weeks getting all of this organzied and ready to go! They are still hard at it making everything work like we've come to expect (for good or ill) and a lot of kudos are deserved. As always, if you have questions please reply here. Otherwise, welcome back once again and get comfortable! ~row The following users thanked this post: Mooneyes

Layonara Server / The Fortune System« on: November 06, 2013, 11:06:03 pm »
Greetings all,A short time ago, we announced the Fortune system, which at the time was described only as a system to accumulate points that can be used for various things simply by being in-game and active. Today, I am going to describe exactly what Fortune is and how it can benefit you.At the simplest level, Fortune is essentially like XP, only more flexible in what one may do with it. The system is also very similar to AutoXP, except that Fortune does not have to be activated by a GM, and it doesn't expire. That's right, the Fortune system is always running. To give credit, the original concept came from long-time player and former GM stormspirit. Once the concept took root in my head, I worked out the details and initial state with Rowana and added the system to the modules. She's since been instrumental in testing and refining the system.
How does it work?As long as a character is logged in and active, that character will earn some small amount of Fortune every few minutes. This Fortune adds up, and eventually a character will earn a whole point. Once this happens, that point can be spent or saved. There is no requirement to spend Fortune points. In fact, some may wish to save it up for special reasons, which I will detail later. Fortune points are stored on each character and saved to the database. There's very little to it than that. Characters will continue to accumulate XP through all the normal methods, but they will also accumulate Fortune at the same time. There is one thing of key importance that must be stressed. Fortune is NOT an in-character thing in any way. Just like XP is an OOC mechanic with in-game benefits. Just like you do not talk about XP in an IC sense, neither should you talk about Fortune in an IC sense. If you need any guidance on this, please ask. Do not discuss Fortune in any in-character way.One way to think of it is a representation of a character's "social capital", their influence, reknown or reputation, though in some other ways it is also just a way for us to reward and thank you for spending time in-game. Despite Fortune being earned simply by being in-game, as you'll read below, the Fortune rewards for more RP-focused activities are greater, and so there are some significant RP ways to spend one's accumulated Fortune.Keeping trackSince Fortune is a custom system and will not show up on any character sheet in-game, we've made it easy to check one's Fortune at any time. Simply type the following in the chat bar:=c pointsThis will report to you how many whole points of Fortune your current character possesses. Also, anytime a character earns a whole point of Fortune, this will be shown as a system message, and that character's current total will also be displayed. This message will not be seen frequently. Instead, during each interval, a more generic and non-specific message will be shown: Your Fortune has increased slightly. This means your character has earned some fractional amount of Fortune. This update message can be disabled by using the following toggle command: =c toggle points_feedbackFor those who really need to get a microscopic view of their current Fortune levels, there is another command to show a more exact total: =c points exactEveryone who already had a character at the time that this system was put into place will start out with a starting pool of five (5) Fortune points. Existing characters belonging to GMs start out with a pool of fifteen (15) Fortune points. World Leader characters start out with a pool of twenty-five (25) Fortune points. New characters will start out with one (1) Fortune point. Gaining FortuneAs stated above, simply being actively in-game will allow a character to gain Fortune at a slow but consistent rate. However, there are other ways to earn Fortune.GMs can give out Fortune points in the same way they give out XP right now. In fact, the tool is set to give out Fortune in the same sort of amounts, except rather than giving out whole or fractional hours worth of XP, they can now give out whole or fractional points of Fortune instead.GMs may give out Fortune instead of quest XP. This choice will be primarily up to the GM, though requests for one or the other by players will be considered. Also, effective immediately, GMs will give out 1 Fortune point simply for showing up to a quest, even if the GM cannot ultimately take everyone who shows up. (Note: If people begin to abuse this, we will be forced to reevaluate this policy. Please don't make us do this.)Lastly, the World Leader XP wand has been modified to give out either XP or Fortune. One Fortune point granted by GMs and WLs is effectively equivalent to 1 hour of RP or Quest XP.For transparency, World Leader characters will accumulate Fortune at a faster rate. However, they will receive the same number of Fortune points when awarded by a GM for quest or RP rewards.Fortune earned by a character is for that character alone. One may not share Fortune with another character on the same account, nor can a player pool all the Fortune from all characters held by that player. There are only a few cases where pooling of Fortune will be allowed at all (more below), but it will not be allowed to pool the Fortune points of characters belonging to the same player.Spending FortuneWhile the idea of earning points just for playing is probably interesting in itself, it's worth talking about the sorts of things on which these points can be spent. Note that once a point is spent, that character's Fortune is reduced accordingly. Of course, the points can be earned again, but in this way Fortune is also like a sort of currency...a resource to be used and managed. The things upon which one may spend Fortune fit into one of four key categories:
Again, these options are solely at the discretion of the GM(s) running the quest. There is not guarantee these options will be available, nor is there any guarantee of complete success. Always work with the GM when desiring to spend Fortune in this way. Note also that GMs will deduct Fortune on the spot when it is used in this way. Also, it's important to note that there is a limit to the number of times a single character can utilize Fortune like this during a single quest. While the GM running the quest will have final say on this limit, we will generally limit these uses to three (3) times, in any combination, during a given quest episode/event.
What are the numbers? The Fortune systems is based on time and a certain number of points given out per hour of playing, divided up into smaller intervals to allow people to benefit regardless of how long they can spend in-game at any given time. We have factors we can bring into play to increase or decrease this rate or even shut it off completely. At this time, we are not inclined to discuss the exact numbers. We may never be, in fact. We may tweak and adjust the numbers over time as seems appropriate. We may find cause to change the rates because we feel they're too fast or too slow. We may have bonus events, announced and unannounced. We also don't want people to game or exploit the system. We don't want people scrutinizing their time spent in-game and figuring out how maximize their Fortune and little else. As such, we are keeping the inner workings of this system private for the foreseeable future. That said, there are certain rates and numbers which are public and visible:
