Roleplaying / RPing Intelligence
« on: April 06, 2007, 09:34:07 pm »
Had an interesting conversation with another player last night about a character's intelligence.

I was playing a PC with an intelligence of 10 .... average. This character had concocted a plan to deceive some others that was reasonably involved/intricate.

I received a tell (good naturedly) from this other player saying that this plan was more appropriate for a character with a much higher intelligence. My initial thoughts were along the lines of probably so but the more I thought about it, the more that I begged to differ. I (RL me) had thought of this plan and I couldn't say I was more than average intelligence as measured by DnD standards. Afterall, I can barely speak one language let alone an additional 3-4 which is the quantifiable benefit from a high intelligence!

It amused me that we (I?) tend to think of ourselves as RL intelligence of 20+ and we (I?) have to dumb down our (my?) own intellect/rationality to play a character of less than 20+ intelligence. I don't believe we need to play characters with 'average' ability scores as less than average. Now I just have to work out how to RP my character with 16 intelligence ....

My point? None really, just struck me as an interesting idea, thought i'd share. : )

Trade and Market Hall / Whip of the Gods
« on: March 21, 2007, 07:01:41 pm »
Millenia ago, when the world was young, the foul and rancorous God Corath first stalked the lands of Layonara. In his passing, crops withered, babes grew sick, malcontent roiled where there was previously harmony and peace. All who felt the presence of the Black Sun knew evil and hate deified and chaos and discord were rife.

In these early days, prior to the establishment of law and order that we enjoy today, dark souled individuals, ever obsequiously ambitious, sought the favour of the Mad One. It is rumoured an assembly of damnable men and women (mayhaps eventually becoming the first Dread Priests and Priestesses of Corath), through means deceitful and deceptive, obtained and offered as sacrifice to the Black Sun one hundred virgins of noble birth.

It is remembered in ancient histories best left forgotten that Corath, pleased with this offering, took a hell-forged whip from his side and flayed the multitude of victims in an orgy of unspeakable horror that taints the land to this very day.

What became of this whip, this instrument of overwhelming evil, was lost in the passage of the years that followed. Over time, there were rumours of it surfacing in lands near and far and whenever it did chaos, war and pestilence followed.

Eventually, through a sequence of events of fantastic chance, this whip has come into my possession. My first thoughts were to take it straight to a temple of Aeridin, Rofirein or Toran so that the whip might never again fall into the hands of evil-doers. I am a lover of peace and the thought of this filled me with dread.

Then, I remembered the realities of the world in which we live, the children going hungry, the multitude of orphans, the sick, the needy, the poor huddled masses. As I stood on the docks of Hempstead, tears in my eyes, watching a beggar, a boy child, no older than eight or nine, I had an epiphany. I would sell this whip, hopefully to a cashed-up crusader or good and light and use the money to help these unfortunate souls.

Though it initially seemed at odds with my altruistic heart, I decided it must be the best course of action.

And so, I offer for sale, the Whip of The Black Sun. Starting bid, whatever one might think is reasonable to keep this in the 'right' hands.

Poetic License / Druid Limerick
« on: March 20, 2007, 09:10:41 pm »
// Howdy! I decided to try something a little different with one of my new characters, Slessanaa the druid ... his CDT would be entirely made up of poems/poetry.

I was trying to write a relevant limerick but decided not to post it into his CDT for fear it would turn the whole attempt at creativity into a farce!

So, instead, here it is!

A druid took his wolf for a walk,
No fighting please, just talk,
Yet by unfortunate chance,
They chatted near ants,
A passing bard could but gape, giggle and gawk.

If of interest, feel free to add your own creations!

feed

with claw and fang
I am the wolf

with talon and beak
I am the hawk

with hand and tooth
I am the man

feed
and know life

this shell I wear
this body, this flesh,
Skin, feathers, scale and fur

I close my eyes
to know an inherent truth

How truth is not this form
all you know may not be so.

So feed
with fang
with beak
with tooth
sustain this form,
this alien flesh

feed of the animal
of the leaf, of the fruit
of the earth, of  the root
feed to remember
from whence you came

rip
tear
eat

and know life

NWN Ideas, Suggestions, Requests / Wolverine Camp
« on: March 16, 2007, 11:26:17 pm »
Is it possible to add a couple of NPCs (maybe guards on the wall) to the Wolverine Camp near Black Ice Island?

Maybe a line of text when you enter that screen that says 'you see figures atop the battlements' or some such if that takes up less room in the module?

Reason being, I had always assumed it was deserted and only found out last night it was actually a manned outpost!

Introduce Yourself / Pseudonym

Real name: Matt.
Real age: 33.
Real Location: Melbourne, Australia.

If any of you have ever met my character Ark in game, he's not a huge stretch for me to RP ... except he has got a goodly quantity of true in the bank and has a 23 dexterity.

RL, I currently own a retail business here in Melbourne, Australia but in 5 years i'd like to be retired and living in Barbados with my new wife named Candy. Actually, thinking about it, i'd like to be doing that right now.

Hope to see you soon!

This is not me, it's one of my kids. She has, however, borrowed my pink fairy top for the photo.

Wild Surge Inn / Postmaster Vale

*Gossips and rumour-mongers have been telling tales that one of Hlint's most eligible bachelors, Postmaster Vale, has been seen escorting an attractive young lady of unknown origin to the Wild Surge the last few evenings. The couple were seen sharing a candle-lit meal at a corner table and fellow diners reported much giggling and intimate whispering going on. Later in the evening, after a few glasses of liquid refreshment, the dutiful civic servant and his partner allegedly set the dance floor alight. Hostess Doria divulged to one patron that she had never seen Vale looking so happy, nor did she know that he had such an enviable range of golem-movement dance moves.*

Thoughts of Urhuk Meshanek

Humanity.
The Natural World.

Why is there a perceived conflict? It is a simple issue. They are not in conflict. Humankind has risen and evolved to be the greatest killing beast in the animal kingdom. Humankind, by the rule of natural law, deserves their place in deciding the fate, the life and death, of those around them.

Yet, I look around and see the rightful place of those who should continue, by the selection of natural law, restricted and bounded. Humankind place restrictions, laws and boundaries on themselves that limit the reign of their free will. The strongest should survive and flourish and create their own reality. The weakest perish and perpetuate their failure no longer. All law, all normal and natural behaviour must flow from this immutable truth.

Nature. Corath. They call upon me to reveal this truth to those who are blinded. Natural Law must be the impetus for all my behaviour, for the behaviour of all. The weak, they build their walls and they build their laws to pervert the course of natural law. The strong, the worthy, those who must continue ... need none of these artificial props to support our place. I must not fail, for failure is weakness and not tolerated by the Dark One. The strong do not fail. The weak fail. The weak fear and the weak create artificial laws to hide their frailties. Mercy is weakness. Mercy is not a favour one does for another. Mercy is a delay of their inevitable fall. If someone, something is in the position of needing your mercy .. they are unworthy of continuation.

Why is this truth seen as ‘evil’? It is not a question of good and evil. It just is truth. Those who seek to hide this truth are guilty of a far greater perversion of natural law than any Corathite I have ever met.

The strong survive and dominate. It is the law of the Natural World, the only true law not distorted by cultural and political ambiguity, and I will reveal this truth to all. The walls of the weak must topple. The laws of the corrupt must be revealed for the lies they are. People have accused me of being brutal. What is brutality? I must be a reflection of Corath and a reflection of the natural order. Savage, cruel ... evolving to perfection of self.

I am Corath’s instrument of truth.
I am Nature’s instrument of truth.

Servant of the Lifegiver?
Hate shedding blood as much as I do?
Wouldn't it be better if someone devised an alchemical solution that weakened those foes that we couldn't persuade with gentle words to put aside their evil ways?

Friends, look no further!

Arkolio, lover of peace, has been hard at work!

I have, currently in stock, a number of solutions that may be placed on your weapon (yes, it pains me to use the 'w' word) that will weaken an opponent. Long have I wrestled with the morality of using such distillations in unavoidable combat but, after talking with priests and priestesses of the Lifegiver, now believe I have no choice but to offer this service. These solutions, in the sad event of dreaded battle, will weaken an opponent, hopefully to such a extent where they retire from the fray before one is forced into the tragedy of ending their life.

Surely a few true is not too great a price to pay for furthering the work of the Lord of Light?

Do your part, help prevent avoidable death and seek Arkolio de'Averlain in Hlint and surrounds.

General Discussion / Players new and old - please consider!
« on: January 18, 2007, 11:09:00 pm »
Imagine if you will;

There is a man who lives in Australia, let's call him Pseudonym. He is introduced to the world of Layonara about 6 months or so ago by another player, let's call him Dezzo* (*name subtly changed to protect the tubby).

Pseudonym, a regular guy with a regular family and a regular job yielding an all too regular income and has a regular, normal life and regular, normal habits (are you relating to me yet?) plays Layo on and off for the next 6 months. Perhaps a little more on than off if we are being totally honest ...

To date, Pseudonym has made (I think) two donations to Layo's owner, about $20 bucks a time, when he was on the Paypal site paying for some rubbish he bought off ebay. Okay, this week Pseudonym has a few days off work and is told he is painting the exterior of the house by Mrs Pseudonym* (names again subtly changed, her real name is the Devil). Still with me? Pseudonym is afforded way too much time to think as he engages in the mindless task of painting the house ...

Pseudonym thinks of the 24 hours in each day.
He works say 9 hours of these, sleeps for about 7 more.
That leaves 8.
Let's say, on average, of those 8 remaining, 2 hours are spent playing Layo after the little Pseudonyms and Mrs Pseudonym have gone off to bed.
That's about 8% of my time!!!
Pseudonym, who has a somewhat black and white perspective on many things, thinks about the fairness of his two donations given he spends about 8% of his day playing this game WHICH COSTS SOMEONE ELSE A CONSIDERABLE AMOUNT OF MONEY.

I don't really know about the legality of requesting donations ... It's my understanding L is not allowed to come out and demand donations from people? I think he can request and thats about it? It occurred to me today that he is a hell of a lot more restrained asking players for donations than I would be in the same situation. I've seen posts once and a while pop up along similar lines to this one now and have always thought to myself 'what a suck!' (Is that just an Aussie expression? A crawlie bumsnake? A brownnose? Anyway...) but now I am thinking maybe the inequality (that I am sure is present for most players) in this equation has occurred to others before it did me.

Please consider.

PS. Pseudonym apologises for the repeated references to himself in the third person.

General Discussion / Lair of Bricket the Journeyman - Help!!

//

Part 1 of quest completed last night that was generally agreed upon by all involved to be great RP, great combat and great challenges all round.

Little problem ... last night we had Kobal in our party (and still managed to lose 3 DTs amongst the group) and tonight Kobal can't make it. Arkolio (ie. me) is very nervous!!! We need suckers ... oops, I mean we need volunteers!!!

hehehe, Just kidding, it has been challenging (and sure Dezza is an evil GM) but it also was, and will be, awesome fun! Also a great opportunity to adventure with (to my mind at least) some of the best RPers on the server. Do yourself a favour and check it out on the calendar!

General Discussion / Loot splitting - question?
« on: November 28, 2006, 02:47:30 pm »
Far be it from me to rehash something thats been probably rehashed a thousand times, but . . .

The splitting of loot is outside normal RP, yes? Correct me if i'm wrong.

I try to play the most untrustworthy rogue on server but I have always split loot perfectly equitably amongst party members at the end of a run, although doing so is completely NOT 'him'. It's starting to bug me when the looters get a little casual with this ... ESPECIALLY WITH ITEMS!! (Check it out, caps lock on, I must be annoyed)

I don't care if it's a couple of dusts, a scroll of summon I and another Bracers of the Scout. Split these too!

Just for Fun / Player behind the Character
« on: November 13, 2006, 05:54:14 pm »
Is anyone else ever curious to learn more about the player BEHIND the character?

I find it fascinating to learn about people's RL and maybe the causal link to their character's behaviour.
As such, I thought i'd throw on a questionnaire into this forum that people might (or might not) like to fill in to let the other people of the layo community know a little more about themselves. Some basic info is in people's profile page I know . . . I suppose if no-one else finds it interesting this thread will die a lonely death!

Feel free when you copy and paste to delete any question you don't wish to answer or add something too! I've put some details about myself to get it started.

General Discussion / Lowest HPs
« on: October 23, 2006, 04:27:29 pm »
You know how sometimes you get hit by some massive damage and your hit points drop to -11 or -12 and you think to yourself, 'bugger, so close, I almost made it' I'm not entirely sure if I set an official record, or just my own record, last night on Dezza's quest but;

*Arkolio creeps along the darkened corridor, relatively unscathed from the battle with the savage pygmy warriors outside (// 71/97 HPs ). Some distace behind, the heavy footsteps of Pig, Jake, Revone and the others echoed loudly in his ears. This is what Arkolio loved best, far ahead of the group, at one with the shadows - unseen to even the most wary of watchers. Moving forward with unrivalled stealth and grace, Arkolio's eyes peered into the gloom of the crypt beyond. It was then that he heard a small click sound at his feet...*

*reflex save, Roll 1 + Modifier 26 = 27, DC = 35)

// Arkolio -174/97 HPs

What's left of the human body at -174 HPs? Can someone beat this!!??!

PS. Thanks to Dezza, it was great fun! My two favourite bits - the trap on top of the crypt causing Jake's head to explode (ha!) and the RP onboard the ship;

Pirate captain Liselle Arcanbow - "Disobey my orders you lubbers and you'll be dining with the sharks. Don't think I don't have the balls to do it!"
Ne'er-do-well Arkolio de'Averlain - "Milday, i'm sure if you did have balls, they'd be sizeable!"

This is interesting. And, If you're like me, you will keep trying at least 50 more times to see if you can outsmart your foot!

1. While sitting at your desk, lift your right foot off the floor and make clockwise circles.

2. Now, while doing this, draw the number "6" in the air with your right hand.

Your foot will change direction.

I told you so ... And there's nothing you can do about it!

Just for Fun / Arkolio's guide to wooing the women PCs of Layo
« on: October 09, 2006, 10:33:49 pm »
1. When she asks how she looks, shrug and say "could be better" this will keep her on her toes, and girls love that.

2. Never hold her hand. This can be interpreted as a sign of weakness.

3. Send her a LORE bird her in the middle of the night to ask if she's sleeping. If she is, say "you better be" , repeat this 4 or 5 times until morning. This will show her you care.

4. When she is upset about something, suggest to her that it might be her fault. This will pave the way for her own personal improvement.

5. Recognize the small things, they usually mean the most. Then when she's sleeping, steal all her small things and break them. Because jewellery is for wussies.

6. If you're talking to another girl, make sure she's looking. When she is, stare into her eyes ... and then turn back to the conversation at hand. Girls love competition.

7. Introduce her to your PC friends as "what’s-her-name". Women love those special nicknames.

8. Make her laugh. A good way to do this is when you pass the badgers near Hlint. Kick them. I always find stuff like that funny. Why shouldn't girls?

9. Let her fall asleep in your arms. When she's fast asleep, wait 10 minutes then JUMP UP AND SCREAM IN HER EAR! Repeat until she goes home and you can use your arms for far more important things. Like looting.

10. Spit often. I hear girls like guys that spit.

11. Take her out to dinner at the Wild Surge or the Leilon Arms. Right when she's about to order interrupt and say "No, she's not hungry". Girls love a guy that speak for her.

12. Remember her birthday but don't get her something. Teach her material objects aren't important. The only thing that's important is that she keeps me happy. And my happiness is the greatest present she can ever get.
