1736 Canting Dictionary

I don't have a slang word of the day yet, but this online dictionary of thieving slang is more than just a list of slang words and their meanings. There are examples of how the slang words and phrases were used, and I have added lots of links between the entries so you can use it as a slang thesaurus too.

Most of the links here are from lists of resources for writers, and if you are writing about the late 1600s or early 1700s in England (especially with London slang) you'll find a lot of ideas here.

Nathan Bailey published this slang glossary in 1737, and he didn't hold back: there are sex slang terms along with prison slang and even eighteenth century urban slang phrases! Is it a slang dictionary or a slang glossary? The author called it a dictionary of canting terms, and it's certainly more than just a list of slang words and their meanings.

 

If you are looking for a modern British dictionary of slang, or for elizabethan slang, look elsewhere. This is vulgar slang from the 1720s."

hello all

i'm new to your world (still awaiting character approval), but i've a query for anyone who's interested...

i'm trying to locate the city of Huangin, of which it is said

On the Northern coast of Tilmar lays the wealthy city of Huangjin.


and yet, the maps (i know i'll draw the Ire of the Cartographer's Guild!) i have been able to locate indicate an island of "Talimar" but no "Tilmar"

nor, on the island map of "Talimar" can i find evidence of the fabled trading city of Huangjin - tho i do see Trax, Rodez and "Terror Village" (sounds like a cheerful place!)

perhaps someone can direct me to the proper map?

hi

i just found your website and world today. it looks GREAT. i have been reading the background and world history, some about the deities and i am impressed by the level of detail you've gone into here. i hope that i'll be able to participate, even tho i'm coming off a macintosh platform.

at any rate, megakudos for the folks who've put this together. it really looks like you've put a lot of effort and love into this
