I do remember so many of those things, despite being born in '89. As sad as it is, I know the entire Captain Planet theme song :)

Thought it may be time to ressurect an old thread :) I was thinking about this the other day and was wondering what actors would go with the various characters we have out there. So let's see who we need to cast for who :P

General Discussion / Re: Class Discussion
« on: June 27, 2006, 09:24:02 am »
There is a line somewhere in the DM's guide for the 3rd edition about Barbarians and fighters. It says that one on one, the fighter will win practically every time, due to the feats and the armor. The barbarian can even be in a rage, but it'll still lose. So why play the barbarian? They have a better hitdie, and thus get more hitpoints. They get fast movement, and eventually even DR. Still, perhaps not comparable to a well-built fighter, but if you want to play the more powerful class, play the fighter.

As for setting an Intelligence restriction on a fighter, that doesn't really seem like it would work. After all, there are plenty of not-so-bright warriors out there. They don't rely solely on their rage, or their natural strength. Instead they are well-trained. Frankly, it just doesn't seem like they need to be intelligent to be a fighter. Although many fighters you may notice have the high intelligence anyway, as you'll need it to go Weapon Master.

Now there are spell casters. I can't play them in NWN because I lose track of my spells and I can't cast them fast enough. As a result I play fighters or some form of fighter. And i must agree with the others that have said above that mages are weak at low-levels, and less than powerful at epic levels. They should be powerful though. But once they run out of spells, the game is over for a mage. For a Fighter, they can keep fighting at the same rate until they are dead, or until there is nothing left to fight. So the way I see it is burts of lots of power, or a steady, not quite as great a power.

The way I would see solving the "problem" is that the rest restriction are greater. But frankly, I don't really want it to happen as that will hurt everyone and make the game less fun, and more tedious. So I guess that just means we aren't really going to be able to solve the "problem", because as Ar7 said, the solutions only cause more problems.

In my own opinion though, it really isn't the wizards/sorcs that are overpowered. The clerics are hands down the best solo-artists out their, due to their defensive spells, combined with a small amount of offensive spells for when things get rough. Mixed in with a decent base attack as well as a decent hit die, you have a jugernaut. What is the weak spot of the cleric then? The fact that they have to comply with with their dieties dogma, they have to be active in the religion. They get their powers and, much like paladins, have harsh restricitons if they plan to keep them. Where as others can be dynamic and shift alignments and dieties, the cleric cannot. It is an RP restriction, but it is still the thing that, I think, makes sure that clerics are balanced. After all, why would a cleric of Aeridan be blasting the life out of everything?

So yeah... I guess that's just my take on it. I guess if you want to solo, make a soloing character. If you want to play something else that won't be good at soloing, do that.

So, if re-taking Pranzis is a priority, then an army needs to be recruited, equipped, and deployed to Lorindar, Saudria, and Hurm to begin the seige

That's assuming the rulers of the respective cities actually *want* Pranzis to be re-claimed :)

General Discussion / RE: Points in Harloff’s post

Agreed, my eyes hurt. Lots of reading in there.

On broken classes, at the moment I haven't seen or heard much complaining about them. I have always wanted to play a spellsword, regardless if they are underpowered or not. I just don't have the time to get another character up to that point. As for the Skald, heh, I know a person who plays one pretty well. But he has never, not once complained about his skald abilities. Instead he's been grateful for the cool things it lets him do, and the fact that there are so few out there like his character. I firmly believe the idea that "You make your own good time." And if you are going to let a few problems with a class ruin that good time, so be it. But instead, look at the good things :)

Ha, I lucked out that I got the morning shift at work that day. So I'm out in time for the quest. Unfortunately, I have to also avoid the dreaded family bonding time, but if that can be dodged, Jet will be there.

Everyone is always standing in the exact same place, and when they aren't, everyone wonders what is going on.

People don't hesitate to invade the forests, chop half the trees down, and then wonder why the native satyrs are shooting at them.

Every person encountered on your way from one place to another is an enemy. Unless, of course, they glow blue or green.

You could mine the same place for years, and no matter what the ore always finds a way to regenerate.

People maintain stunning good looks, despite monster blood, their own blood, scars, dirt, burns, frostbite... as well as God knows what other injuries.

Emeralds are among the rarest minerals in the world, yet entire golems are made from them and destroyed on a daily basis.

Epic people are incredibly rare, yet the entire Eastern side of the world is filled with beasts that are even more skilled than the most skilled in the world.

Backpacks somehow contain enough room to fit pretty much every item an adventurer needs on the go, as well as the loot, materials, and gold gathered.

And finally...

The most feared creature in the world is a small penguin wearing a backpack :P

Development Journals and Discussion / A new lesson...
« on: June 20, 2006, 12:51:14 pm »
**Jet reaches the top of the peak, and a cold wind blows by and then down into the valley. He looks over the small town of Lar. For a time he called this place home. Now it was simply a memory, a place that he used to go. It had been so long since he last had visited. He sets his pack down beside him, and removes a small rose from the pack. Jet then stares at theflower for some time...**

Love. So long ago I was told it would be the cause of my downfall. That it would be my fatal flaw, and that one day I would let love and my other emotions get the better of me in combat. I did not believe it at the time, and as always I stubbornly refused to listen.

And then I was told that my love was a virtue, a virtue that would set me aside from the other warriors. Warriors that killed without a second thought. Warriors like my old comrades. I quickly embraced this. I followed my hope that this would be right, and believed wholeheartedly that my love would guide and control me.

**another cold wind blows by, and the rose sways in the wind**

Today I see the flaws in both concepts. If I only listened to Tyde, I would have followed only raw combat instincts. I would not fight for a purpose. The lives that I would take would have no meaning. I would have no reason behind my actions. In the end, I would be no worse than those that I have escaped from, and I would be abandoning those that I wronged so many years ago.

But... at the same time I cannot fully ignore Tyde's lesson. I cannot let my emotions control. Vivian's lesson was one meant for a fairy tale. I cannot let my emotions control myself, and I cannot let love be my sole factor for making my descions. Survival has its merits, and without the ability to survive and right the wrongs I have committed then I would also be abandoning those that I did not help when they needed me most. I would be useless in the end. I realize now that no one is going to save me but me.

As of today I say good-bye to that dream-world I once thought I was in. Today I have taught myself the lesson, instead of relying on guidance from others. Today I emerge as a man not shaped by others will, but instead having made his own decisions.

**He tosses the rose to the snow-covered ground**

This will be a new start for me. A new way for me to find my redemption, and my peace. It will be another battle, another struggle, but in the end I will prevail.

Tyde will meet my blades yet, and when he does he will be facing a warrior that is not one who has been shaped by him, nor one who has rejected him. Instead he will be facing a warrior. One who is ready to be done with his vendetta, and one who has shaped himself into the warrior that he wants to be. There will be no fear in my eyes this time, Tyde. There is no place left in me for fear.

**Jet slowly turns around and begins his decent down the mountain as the rose is gradually covered by snow.**

"Good-bye"

**As Jet leaves sight of the rose, it continues to be covered with snow. Finally, the rose dissappers, erased by the snow, as if it was never truly there. All that is left is the wind howling**

Just for Fun / Re: Character theme songs
« on: June 20, 2006, 10:55:04 am »
Took me long enough to decide, but I would have to say Jet's theme song would be Nickelback's Hero:

I am so high, I can hear heaven
I am so high, I can hear heaven
Whoa, but heaven...no, heaven don't hear me

And they say
That a hero could save us
I'm not gonna stand here and wait
I'll hold on
to the wings of the eagles
Watch as we all fly away

Someone told meLove would all save us
But, how can that be
Look what love gave us
A world full of killing
And blood spilling
That world never came

And they say
That a hero could save us
I'm not gonna stand here and wait
I'll hold on to the wings of the eagles
Watch as we all fly away

Now that the world isn't ending
It's love that I'm sending to you
It isn't the love of a hero
And that's why I fear it won't do

And they say
That a hero could save us
I'm not gonna stand here and waitI'll hold on to the wings of
the eagles
Watch as we all fly away

And they're watching us
They're watching us
As we all fly away

You Are A:

Lawful Neutral Human Fighter Ranger
Follower Of Helm

Alignment:
Lawful Neutral characters believe in the triumph of law and order above all else. It does not matter whether the leader is for good or evil; the leader will be followed, because the order they provide is the most important thing.

Race:
Humans are the 'average' race. They have the shortest life spans, and because of this, they tend to avoid the racial prejudices that other races are known for. They are also very curious and tend to live 'for the moment'.

Primary Class:
Fighters are the warriors. They use weapons to accomplish their goals. This isn't to say that they aren't intelligent, but that they do, in fact, believe that violence is frequently the answer.

Secondary Class:
Rangers are the defenders of nature and the elements. They are in tune with the Earth, and work to keep it safe and healthy.

Deity:
Helm is the Lawful Neutral god of guardians and protectors. His followers believe in vigilance and preparedness, and are always ready for whatever confronts them. They wear plate mail, sometimes with gold embossing, with an open eye set into the breastplate, and an open-faced helmet. Helm's symbol is an open eye in a gauntlet.

I recall an incident from a quest of mine... the Magma Paraelemental. Ozy called it a God of Fire on two legs. Took out the entire party without taking a single point of damage.

And that was the smallest one, too. :P

CNR Suggestions/Discussion / Re: Poison - It's an Edge
« on: June 14, 2006, 02:13:08 pm »
In my opinion, there really shouldn't be any restrictions to use poisons at all. After all, my cleric of Sulterio is Lawful Neutral, the only alignment a cleric of Sulterio can play without being evil. So what's wrong with that? Sulterio is the God of Poison, and it would kinda make sense for him to be able to use poison.

I agree with what was said earlier about using game mechanics to restrict poison use. If people have a good RP reason to make poison, they should be able to. If they don't, then they shouldn't make the poison. Like back to the animal thing Stephen brought up. Druids CAN hurt animals, but your not really considered a good druid if you do, and other druids would disown you and refuse to work with you. It should be the same with poison. The LG paladin of Toran CAN make poison, but the church would likely cast him out and he likely wouldn' stay a paladin of Toran long.
