Ar7 - 8/9/2006 4:46 AM *The bard is attacked by three highway bandits so he begins to sing in hope to make the bandits deaf or perhaps cause them pain so they would flee. Instead the bard´s awful song wakes 5 death knights who proceed to beat up the bandits. The bard´s joy from the unexpected turn of events is short lived as the disturbed undead, having quickly finished the bandits, then turn to the bard. Having kicked everyone´s butt they return to their honest and earned rest* This situation just came to my mind after the last reply, don´t know why :)
but the clever bard uses his invisiblity and runs as the undead wake...

Diamondedge - 8/7/2006 12:57 PM Woman or not, you need to start with what I consider the bread and butter of fantasy novels. "In a hole, in the ground, there lived a hobbit." You should start with The Hobbit. It has it's slow bits and it's fast confusing bits, but all in all, it is the grand-daddy of all fantasy genres coming after it's release. It is an easy, light read, deemed 'children's literature' or 'young adult's literature' although all people dearly love the book. After reading The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkein, it is safe to move on to the Lord of the Rings, if you have a good long time to read. The story is told as if in Ent-speak. :P After the Lord of the Rings trilogy, you can go in any one of several directions. I have never read a DragonLance book, and it's very likely that it'll be a long, long time before I do, so I can't really recommend reading them or not. What I read directly following the Lord of the Rings trilogy was the Elminster saga. The first one, "Elminster: The Making of a Mage" is, in my opinion, one of the absolutely best D&D-based books ever written. Ed Greenwood is a talented and wonderful author whom does not get nearly enough credit for his amazing works these days, as R.A. Salvatore seems to be stealing the show. :P I would not recommend the Dark Elf trilogies until you've got yourself acquainted with the Elminster saga. I'd at least read the first three books were I a newcomer to the fantasy realm, since, well, that's exactly what I did. Once you have read the saga, if you follow the road I have taken, move on to the Cleric Quintet. It is a wonderfully charged set of books that keeps moving at a good pace. Salvatore wrote them in what I consider to be 'his prime', after his first several books, when his style had become fairly founded. After the Quintet, I would advise reading the Drizzt books; prepare yourself for stomach-cramping goody-goody drowness. :P The Drizzt books gave major birth to a huge following that is even evident upon Layonara: Good Drow Renegades, Turned Away From Their Homeland's Wicked, Vile Ways. After the whole goody goody drow book, it's perfectly safe to move on to whatever's next. Y'know. I hear Terry Goodkind is good, although I couldn't force myself to read through her novel. I believe I read somethin by Harry Turtledove when I was younger, something of a parody of World War II if it had taken place in a fantasy-like realm. A dark series of books, but very inventive. No sword swinging, unfortunately, but rather, sticks charged with magical energy which I assume could be compared to rifles. :P Beyond what I have listed lies a vast, vast realm of books for your enjoyment. These are only a few that I have 'put forth' for your leisure.
i agree, the hobbit is a very good book to start with ive read it many times myself

Development Journals and Discussion / RE: A Bards Tale

there is a new entry to "Heros of the World" it is simply Entitled Dulan

Will of steel, strong of arm. Protecting others from peril and harm. Marred by darkness, Prevailed by light. Strength and power through Toran’s light.
His sword aglow, his shield on his arm it does rest. Time to fight and face the test. Toran’s light is glowing with pride Sword is swinging, knocking foes aside.
On a charge the enemy charges to a clash. Dulan summons Toran’s light with a flash. Fang jumps forth his flail smashing down. The blow causing the enemy to reel.
They hide in shadow and fear the light. For in the shadows they whisper for others to hear. Dulan of the church of Toran they say in fear.

General Discussion / RE: How did I get here?
« on: August 07, 2006, 02:12:46 am »
ive made lots of characters on layonara but early on i settled with Jamesan Denday, at first i made him as a bit of comic releif tocounter the hardend personality of Jamekulus Gnald but as i continued to play him i started enjoying him so much more.
One very funny thing i remember was once in Hlint at low level i was running around with Arcanist's bard ( i forget his name, sorry!) and there was a group at the benches and we ran in and turned the casting emote on and just started makeing up a song :D, i think it was Darkchild who eventuly screamed and jumped into the lake, ive never laughed so much before :D. but as he levelled up it was getting harder, a bards life is hard when he is amazingly good at failing to do things apart from sing and play instruments, eventuly i met a cleric called Dulan who was buying in knuckles and basicly we just continued to adventure together.
Isuppose his personality comes abit from Twoflower from the Color of Magic, his amazing abilitiy to undererstimate danger and the adament idea that problems are solved by a good drink and talk but it also has a large bit of me in him , i think thats why hes my favorite character. so that is Jamesan, Bard, Looter and Invisiblity Expert.
I found layo after floating about the PVP servers with Arcanist he found layo and i joined him here we created our first characters here and mixed their history abit, Jamzogie and Alwise.
