~ Caerwyn Ahrail'lan

* Caerwyn nods gratefully to Alton, as he pushes back his hood and proceeds to shake out his cloak. Draping it over his bandaged arm, he heads directly for the bar and drags himself up onto a stool. As Tyrian leans across the bar to ask, he shakes his head wearily and fixes her with a stare, despite the consideration she has shown him in passing the odd private note back and forth. *

* He speaks quietly, for her ears alone. * "Whiskey, large... and no questions, please." * He offers her a tired, warm, yet cautionary smile. *

44
* Caerwyn, though passingly familiar with the workings of a ship, wisely chooses to stay out of the way, unless and until asked to help. As the ship races its final furlongs toward the shore, he finds the best place he can to weather the impact of the ship's inevetable grounding. When the ship finally comes to rest, he debarks, likely no more wounded than most, and he does what he can to get survivors out of the surf and up above the tide line. He spends some time binding wounds (his own and others) and, once he sees Jaelle in good hands, heads toward the city and The Twin Dragon's Inn, nodding to Andrew Reid's suggestion of the timely need for a stiff drink. *

When Steel speaks, Caerwyn stops, nods once to him, glances over to Jaelle, and replies: "I have Seccea here in town. Let me know where and I'll get word to you as soon as a decision in reached."

* He then proceeds, wind whipping his cloak furiously, into Leringard. *

Sir,

Another ox-load is ready for delivery. As we discusssed last time, either this or one more will, of necessity, be my final effort for a while; I have other matters that require my attention. We can finalize that decision at the time of this delivery, I am sure.

Quote from: Dorax Windsmith

1)  Install a SMD II feat available at some level (maybe 30) where an additional 5 SSs could be obtained.

2)  Increase the GP system to allow 2 or 3 GP's per some number of levels (2 per 10 levels or 3 per 20 levels).  The restrictions on de-perming a character could still be valid.

I agree that a PC's longevity should have some bearing on any opportunities to gain/recover SSs, and like both these ideas.

I'd think however that a SMD II feat (at level 30 or more) should gain a smaller number than 5 (3?). Both as PCs and players, we should be getting wiser as we go along.

As to #2, if there were to be a change to the GP system to allow for N GPs per M levels, perhaps 'amend' would be a better idea than 'increase', as follows:  When one expends a GP, a 'replacement' GP wouldn't be available until M levels from the point at which it was taken. Sort of a 'walking window', where the total GPs available would never increase beyond N. I think this would also encourage players to submit GP requests as their PC goes along, rather than any 'storing up' of them against some expected future need.

Rumour Has It / Re: Fire in the Forest of Fog

* Enroute to the Farstrider's Temple on a deeply personal pilgrimage, Caerwyn stops dead in his tracks as he sees the fire's devastation with his own eyes. *

Raising his face to the heavens, he calls out as his despair finds a new low, "Not now, my Prince. Please!"

* Wiping his eyes, he gathers his will and presses on to the Temple. As he finds it undestroyed, he is able to compose himself enough to interview those that were present and those that found what evidence existed; his personal matter set aside for now. *

How do you keep people playing when they've essentially "won" the game?

There is another perspective, which may be worth considering: Layo, like golf, can't be won, only played (apologies for the plagerism from "The Legend of Bagger Vance"). To quote the Bard, "The play's the thing".

In an RP emphasised world, with a constantly changing player base, as well as a constantly expanding PC base (including one's own new PCs), there's an almost unlimited set of opportunities for alliances, relationships, collaborations, antipathies, etc.

On the bashy side of things, even with script generated spawns, there are always alternative tactical/operational approaches with which to experiment.

And all this doesn't even take into account the plot and area developments that the team adds as we go along. I really don't understand the concern; a little effort and imagination goes a very long way, IMO.

Rumour Has It / Re: In The Wake of the Hempstead Tsunami ...
« on: November 13, 2009, 04:48:32 pm »
* Throughout the long night, Annwyl continues to fish bodies from the flood waters, stacking them in her appropriated skiff. Every limb she graps raises and then dashes her hopes that another survivor may be found. Each time the boat is full she drags it, wading, back to Allurial or the city walls and helps stack its contents on the many funeral pyres.

Finally, exhausted and soaked, she collapses into the semi-sleep that is her fate, within wafting distance of the continual burnings. When the hazy dawn and the stench keep her from resting further, she smears a pungent ointment across her upper lip, eats some cold rations, and heads back into the city to continue with the seemingly unending task of collecting the dead. *

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
* On hearing of the disasters on the coast as he emerges from the Whitehorn Forest near Leringard, Caerwyn immediately takes the land route to Hempstead. He retrieves Seccea from the flood waters in Allurial to take her to high ground and, once she is safe, returns to the city.

His first stop is at the Orc Basher's guild shop and warehouse where he finds both innundated. He secures the guild gold chest and surveys the damage to the stores. *

"This mess will take weeks to clean up and gods know what we've lost in the way of stock", he mutters irritably.

* Locking the doors of both shop and warehouse, he works his way across the city, cloaked and cowled, to the Tower Academy seeking out his colleagues there. After getting caught up on what has transpired, he turns to Jaelle *

"Alright, how can I help?", he says in a tired and despairing voice that seems uncharacteristic of even his foulest moods.

General Discussion / Re: Thank You

I couldn't agree more, except to add a 'Thank You' to Hedessa herself for organizing it all! From the moving wedding ceremony, to the planned activities, to the bang-up finale, it was all artfully done and truly enjoyable.

It's really too bad that more players missed out on it, especially the newer players; the whole experience demonstrated the types of things that are possible in Layonara.

I've missed an Essa party or two in the past. I doubt very much I'll miss another :)

Fixed Bugs / Re: Arrows with wrong Level Req
« on: October 06, 2009, 09:59:15 am »
Caerwyn ran into the same type of thing when the stacking limits for arrows changed. I don't think it's a UMD thing but more that the lens calculates level req'ments based on value of the stack as a whole.

Try dividing the stack down and checking w/ the lens on a smaller stack.
