Hello!

Firstly, Layonara's servers will be renewed again for a year. Yay! So you can rest easy that as long as there are volunteers to keep the cogs greased the world will continue to run.

Secondly, there are about to be some significant changes to the sites. Every Layonara site and feature has been rolled into one all new site. That includes LORE, the forums, the gallery, the calendar, the character pages, the personal messages, the downloads, the devlog etc.

Let me say the new site is awesome. I can't begin to describe how many features exist. I think players will love the ability to tag anything with your character and then your character's page aggregates all this information. Whether it's a forum topic, a gallery image, maybe quest participation each "node" can be associated with as many characters as you wish.

Here's a current screenshot of the front page to give you an idea of the look and feel of the site.

Anyway, it's getting pretty darn close to being ready so I hope you share in my excitement for its new launch. I'm sure some of you will be a bit concerned with transitioning to a new system but we've tried to keep every single feature that exists already into the new site.

I'll be happy to answer any questions about the new site and we'll go through a period of adjustment I'm sure but moving forward to have the entire codebase in one place is a real benefit to everyone's end.

Also as you may already know, the servers are being paid for their annual renewal again and every dollar you can help to donate will ease my expenses. I've included the links to donate once again for your convenience.

Donate to Layonara in AUD

Donate to Layonara in CAD

Donate to Layonara in EUR

Donate to Layonara in USD

Thank you,
James

Important Layonara Announcements / Tech Update and a Request For Donations
« on: February 18, 2012, 04:55:51 pm »
Hi everyone,

I've made my decision about server hosting and we're not going to see as much down time as I suspected. We do have to transfer the web/lore/forums/irc to a new server but I suspect that will only take a late night downtime of those services, I expect that will be taken care of some time in the last few days of February.  The NWN servers are going to stay as is and as far as I can think, they will not need any sort of downtime.

While I worked on cutting some costs with our host provider I decided to pay for an entire year for all our servers. This comes at a much bigger front end cost of course, but in doing so I save 10% for the full year. This means we're committed to at least another year of all of our servers.

Now I know we haven't had the Donation Tracker working. I was hoping that by creating a manual PayPal donation campaign then whoever donates can post a reply to this thread (unless they wish to be anonymous) and I will confirm their donation with my gratitude and a virtual hug. I'm not looking for any specific target dollar but if I could get back $500 over the year from the community it would be fantastic. There's no timeline for this, so if things are tight right now I understand, but every little bit, even $5 helps!

For convenience I've created links to pay in four different currencies, AUD, CAD, EUR and USD. There is an area on PayPal to add a personal message, please include your forum or character name so I know who's who.

Donate to Layonara in AUD

Donate to Layonara in CAD

Donate to Layonara in EUR

Donate to Layonara in USD

Thanks to everyone for helping and once this server migration is complete I look forward to working hard on the new community site.

Best wishes,
James

General Discussion / Resigning as GM
« on: May 31, 2011, 04:40:17 am »
It is time for me to hand my GM batch to another.

The plot is nearing its end and the remaining parts are in very capable hands. ;)

So, after more years than I care to count I am resigning from my position as GM in Layonara's amazing Team of GMs.

Before I move on to being 'just' a player I have one thing I would like to ask all you players out there:

At times on quests where you feel wronged or feel that the outcome was not fair, please try to remember why the GMs are here. They are here to make this world around your characters a living and breathing entity that provides you with entertainment and fun. That is the basic idea.

So, instead of taking the fight to the GM and/or the Team, try to consider whether the incident in question is one that your character might deal with in an IC fashion - perhaps that was the intent of the GM in the first place.

Like you, GMs are people and people will walk away if you rattle them enough. After all, they are not acting GMs for their own sake, but for the sake of others.

This was not based on a recent episode or a current situation in game. Please consider this a plea that you might consider in the future. I have seen it happen too many times over the years and it simply burns people out, which ends up making this place less colourful and alive.

Finally, I wish you all the very best of luck and hope that many of you will continue to contribute to this magical place that is Layonara. For me the time has come to move on, although I will probably be around with Kobal now and then.

Kind regards,

Harlas

Rumour Has It / Rumblings and fire
« on: May 18, 2011, 11:07:17 am »
While the war grinds on on Belinara throwing the entire continent into chaos the mountains of Molten Isle rumble and start to spew forth dark ash into the sky even more so than usual creating a thick cloud that is slowly moved westwards by the northern wind currents. Huge jagged streaks of lightning that are common place over the many active volcano's of the island ripple across the skies in the dust cloud that is forming and before long long trails of fiery balls of rock start to spew forth from several of the main peaks some of them reaching the far out on the waters around the island.

Before long the dust clouds from the isle drift over the coasts of Boyer covering the beachs, villages and lands with a fine layer of ash and soot.

So too within the Orsgaunt mountains, from two of the tallest peaks, one of which lies close to the Fort of Last Hope there is a deep rumbling. Just after Connor departs from the fort after having summoned the creatures that attacked the enemy seige engines defenders in the fort hear loud cracking sounds from the mountains and scouts report a number of avalanches and dark smoke and ash rising from at least two of the peaks. Soon a think sprinking of ash and soot begins to drift down over the fort and the battles being fought within creating yet more worries for the defenders.

In the south within the Splintered mountains more rumblings occur and again here one of the peaks throws soot and ash high into the air that drifts over Belinara soon reaching Sundance and covering the lands in soot and ash.

So too those near Mount Thul feel a trembling in the earth and notice that on the eastern side of Mount Thul a fine trail of ash and soot starts to rise into the sky.

General Discussion / Big thanks to Dezza
« on: April 26, 2011, 02:47:31 pm »
I know when the plot quest concludes that we will all stand up a applaud Dezza for his works. I want to stand up in the middle of the chaos and say that the job he is currently doing is nothing short of amazing. He seems tireless in this effort. Dezza not only creates engaging write ups but he incorporates the endless stream of PC actions into every write up, which tells me he is also reading and replying to what must be a mountain of PMs. One of the great things that Dezza is doing with these write up is in how he portrays each PC so true to how they are played.

My deepest thanks go out to you Dezza for your work, creativity, and the energy you are putting into this effort.

The Dragon Storm Campaign / Rise of the Long Storm
« on: March 03, 2011, 02:00:16 am »
Above the skies of Audiria, not even a day after the Cult dragons attacked the walls and main gates of the beleagured city the alarm bells ring yet again. Black smoke drifts above the desert sands creating long thin trails into the upper atmosphere in the clear bright morning sun from buildings still burning from the attacks the day before.

The bells ring loud and clear, those brave enough to venture out on the streets that morning run quickly for underground shelters in various buildings around the city that still stand. Once again pikemen, nervous and sweating already from worry and stress move to positions designated around the city to mount what minimal resistance they can offer against the sheer power and brute force of the Cult dragons that have brought their nation to a standstill and killed or made refugees of thousands of their countrymen.

A Synod Cabalist, one considered to be amongst an esteemed order of the elite of the Sand Sea Synods forces waits beneath the overhang of a building with thirty pikemen at his back. He waits with his hand shadowing his dark eyes against the already burning morning sun as he seeks the tell tale specks in the sky that will signal the position of the attacking dragons.

Soon he has them, coming from the west. He watches as they descend from up high a number of miles out from the city over the desert itself. He watches as they gather momentum tucking their wings into their bodies for greater speed generation. In that moment he cannot help but admire the sheer natural power and grace of the beasts but nor can he ignore their potential for destruction. Glancing back at the men behind him he can smell the fear in them. Many had not eaten properly for days, some had lost family and friends already and most were simply not trained for war such as this. Motioning for them to wait and stay hidden he continued to watch the west soon losing sight of the Dragons behind the city walls. At the speed they were coming he estimated it would only be minutes before they would reach the city walls and the attacks would resume.

Closing his eyes the Cabalist called on his ancestors to be with him and prayed as he had done so every day for the last few weeks as if it would be his last day on this world. Touching a sacred relic of his family to his forehead and his lips he walked from the place in which he had hidden and stood to the middle of the dusty street. He signalled his men to stay hidden. There, alone in the middle of the street he called on the Al'noth, words of power that wrapped and twisted around him in currents of energy and the flow of magic that he believed came from his ancestors.

Deep into his castings he heard the first roar and glimpsed the flash of a dark shape as one dragon hit the western wall and rock and debris, men and dust exploded into the air. Fire filled the air in the street ahead and more buildings burst into flame. Then there was a second flash as the other dragon landed on top of the temple to Azatta and breathed fire into the streets around it setting more buildings alight.

Within moments the morning had been shattered in a cacophany of bells, dragon roars, flying debris, fire and the sounds of the wounded or dying.

The Cabalist spoke words of power and ice fell from the skies striking the dragon breaking through the cities western wall. That wall held the gate to the desert road that led to North Fort. Then, more words and harsh crackling lightning arced out in raging blue tendrils to wrap around the creatures neck and wing.

The dragon roared its fury and launched heavy boulders torn from the walls itself at its attacker. The rocks thundered into buildings around the Cabalist and he glimpsed quickly that one struck the place where his men were waiting. He could hear their screams in the dust that now filled the street but forcing his mind to the task at hand their cries become just part of the background noise as he released himself to the magic and cast everything he could summon at the dragon.

Some attacks fizzled and brushed off the dragon, others ran like rain down its skin while others seemed to cause the creature harm. Enraged it advanced on the Cabalist down the street taking time to tear down and destroy everything around it, buildings were smashed into pieces, people who ran into its path were torn apart, the road was clawed into jagged chunks, and clouds of dust and sand were raised by the massive wings as the creature slowly advanced.

At the same time in another part of the city the other dragon that had caused destruction from atop the temple had moved into the streets and was systematically hunting for any people it could find, buildings were either torn down or turned into raging torrents of fire in its rampage.

All the while far into the desert to the west a storm was rising. Winds picked up across the desert and slowly formed a maestrom that rose slowly and gradually until far in the west the sky was filled with a tall whirling tornado of sand particles. All around it hot winds sucked cold air from far above, drawing it down into the spinning vortex at its centre. The sudden condensation causing an intense build up of electrical energy within its core that was realised by sharp and jagged flashes of lighting and deep peals of thunder. The storm gathered strength building higher and higher, wider and wider and then it began to move eastwards.

Oblivious to the rising storm the Cabalist watched his death advancing on him. The massive enraged Cult dragon had allmost reached him and been able to shrug off most of the energy he had thrown at it leaving him nothing in reserve. Waiting for the inevitable he closed his eyes as the dragons claw moved towards him and its violent roars filled his years.

Then...far above the storm from the desert broke over the city, the sky darkened all at once and the spinning vortex of sand enveloped the city. The violent wind blown sand cut vision to no more than a few feet, and the winds howled through the streets, lighting lashed out and struck at any object that rose above the main level of the city and thunder roared within its depths.

Blown off his feet the Cabalist was flung against a building by the force of the sudden wind, sand lashed at his exposed skin and forced its way into his eyes and mouth. The Dragon that had been about to strike him tried to leap into the whirling maelstrom to escape and was all at once smashed into the ground as two smaller forms tore into it. The Cabalist fought to blink away sand and fix his gaze on the confused images, his mind barely able to adapt to the sudden change in the air around him and the battle before him. Awe and shock filled him, disbelief rose in his heart and then the thought that his prayers to his ancestors had saved his life filled his mind.

Struggling to see or even move in the vicious sand storm he could barely make out the shapes tearing and ripping into the larger dragon, blood splattered on the ground as the larger dragon tried desperately to escape its attackers and gain some height. The combat was ferocious between the three combatants but it was clear the two smaller foes had gained the element of suprise over the larger. The Cabalist fought to regain his feet fighting against the fierce winds as the larger dragon managed to break away from its attackers and leap into the air. There, a massive discharge of lightning thundered into the creature and with a stench of burning flesh and a loud thump its lifeless form hit the ground. The shockwave from the blast sent the Cabalist back against the wall again where he collapsed unconscious.

Meanwhile the other dragon had noticed the approaching storm and leapt into the air to evade it. The storm seemed to surge towards the fleeing creature and just as it reached it a huge blue skinned shape emerged from the storm. Lightning issued forth from its open maw along with hundreds of tendrils of electrical energy from the storm it had created. The massive discharge enveloped the fleeing Cult dragon and when the flash dissipated dust and ash, all that remained of the dragon drifted slowly towards the desert floor.

With a deep throated roar the Long Storm circled the city, the storm he and his kin had created starting to dimish, leaving a thick layer of sand over the entire city.

With another deep roar, answered in kind by two smaller dragons, a gold and a slate coloured one that rose from the city to join him. The three dragons headed west once again.

And as the dust settled, the people emerged to behold the wonder of their salvation from the Cult dragons.

The Dragon Storm Campaign / State of play on the War
« on: February 25, 2011, 06:28:37 pm »
//Over the last few 10 months of the war the following has occured in sequential order. Some of course have taken more time than others to complete but this is the general state of play and order of events.

The Blackford War Council implodes then reforms without Moraken to continue the role it was formed for,

Sederra has negotiated an alliance with Rael and Sucession and now faces destruction or being saved by accumulated forces on Dreger,

the Cult fleet bears down on Audiria,

two dragons keep Sederra locked down,

allied forces are busy sailing to Alhon and then marching to battle lines drawn up by the Blackford council and those on the ground in Hilm itself including Sir Lance and Lord Alexander,

Nesar has thrown off the shackles of the Cult with the help of the Corathites and Pyrtechonites,

PC forces seek the location of the Broken One,

the Cult Army in Vilsa with Cyn Chen marches on Nith,

a small Cult force drawn from those that marched on Sundance march towards Fort Miritrix,

the Sederran navy that left Audiria are smashed before even reaching the Cult fleet,

Cult forces secure southern Hilm and move towards the Fort of Last Hope from Sundance and Briardusk,

A very large Cult army has reached the border with Hilm having marched from Swarm lake and rumours are that Molvaren has been seen in this army.

A secondary Cult Army being led by Commander of the Drachs, Jaedan Siphe have marched from Briardusk towards Hilm Castle slowly so they can secure the lands north of Fort of Last Hope. Running battles have been occuring constantly with forces deployed from Hilm Castle to slow these advancing forces down. Heavy casualties have been taken on both sides but the allies have steadily lost ground to this army as it advances north.

Hilm castle has been preparing for the inevitability that they will be under seige within a few months by Cult armies from Swarm lake and those advancing northwards from Sundance.

Fort of Last Hope has also been preparing for Seige as Cult armies form the south secure southern Hilm and armies form Briardusk begin to cut off supply from all avenues except through the moutains to the east. This avenue only possible due to agreements made with the Shindalerians to guide supply ships through the reefs to shore near this location.

At the end of ten months;

Fort of Last Hope is about to beseiged (within the week),
Nith about to be attacked (within two weeks),
Fort Miritrix about to be attacked (within the month),
Audiria about to be attacked by a Cult fleet (within two weeks)
Castle Hilm about to be advanced on (over next 2 months)
A PC led assault on a place within Kuhl will be undertaken (2-3 months away)

// Please note time on layo for all intents and purposes of the PLot has slowed somewhat and may be out of sync with different events. This post is to try and give you some perspective on the time lines as they are ongoing. Any questions or things you feel should be added please PM me. As we move into the final stages time will slow even more in an ooc sense otherwise things don't make a lot of sense in the overall scheme of the war going on, if you know what I mean!

The Dragon Storm Campaign / Nesar capitulates
« on: February 14, 2011, 05:41:35 am »
For days terror rules the streets of Arnax, the horror spreads into nearby farmlands as well and there is not one person who will not forget the two days of horror when the Corathites and the Pyrtechonites destroyed the Green Dragon Cultists that had surrounded Tower Veroer for so long.

At the end of it, when the dead returned to their graves, when the nightmares subsided, the screams faded and the blood stopped flowing, that was when Queen Maillard sent messengers to each quarter of her kingdom with the following proclaimation.

"On this day, on this hour, we do proclaim that Nesar no longer stands in the shadow of the threat of Kuhl and the Green Dragon Cult. No longer do we fear their dragons for we have shown there are those amongst us able to overcome such a threat.

We declare that Nesar will return to nuetrality and cease to participate in any actions, or allow any actions by Kuhl or the Green Dragon Cult or those who would ally themselves against them to occur on Nesar soil.

We have the word of those who have liberated our nation that they will stand with us to prevent any and all who would seek to use our lands again, or attempt to subjugate us. Be they Kuhl and the Green Dragon Cult, or those that oppose them."

General Discussion / Plot requests from all players
« on: January 23, 2011, 11:21:25 pm »
We understand everyone is getting excited about current events in the world and thats fantastic.

I'd just like to make some requests on our behalf of the player community during this time.

1/ Kuhl is effectively locked down and inaccessable anymore without GM interaction. You can in game still travel those areas and kill myrdrachs and drachs and the like but for all intents and purposes that in game activity is separate to actualy gm run events of that same nature and will have no bearing on anything related to the PLot.  We have to ask that you keep that sort of 'adventuring' outside the realm of the Plot. ie from this moment forth plot stuff will have to be handled through GM interaction, guidance or involvement.

2/ Please be patient, there are only a few on the plot team, we are doing our best to keep the momentum happening and help people as much as we can with the things they want to do.

3/ Please try to keep things in perspective. The Cult are a highly organised force with very fast response tactics available to them and large and powerful armies. To the average soldier one Myrdrach could eliminate one, two or even three units of soldiers before it is taken down (approx 60 men), maybe even more, and the Cult have a large number of these. The Cult also have Dragons close to their borders which can cover a lot of terrain in short times, these dragons are capable of carrying nets with Drachs in them or even Drach Ori and others. They are no small pushover and please do not assume they are.

4/ We want to try and make this enjoyable for everyone as we can but when people try to force emote or push certain avenues that seem unreasonable and are not willing to work with us then it makes it frustrating for us and for them and puts a whole negative spin on things.

5/ We are doing the best we can, please try and be happy with what you get.

6/ Have fun...thats an order :)

Rumour Has It / Aeridinites and Azattans make a move..
« on: January 21, 2011, 11:26:29 pm »
It seems that amongst the nations of the world it is the faiths that are mobilising first to counter what seems to be a growing threat from the GDC.

As of today we have heard that the Aeridinites and Azattans have formed a unified front in coming together to arrange for mobile hospitals and the like to be assembled for the coming war in Belinara.

In Northpoint the High priestess Victoria Adlam has announced that Red Nimbus Palmer Felch and the soon to be arriving Green Nimbus Adelle Moonsong will take a large hospitaler force across to Belinara once they have properly assembled.

So too in Audiria Council member Mari Jentre has accounced that she along with Overseer Larissa Husami and Sound Ahim ben-Elhud will be bringing as many members of the faith as they can muster to Northpoint to join the mobilisation there.

This comes after a damning account of the current leadership in Sederra with Council member Mari likening them to 'stunned mullets who jump at any Cult shadow.'

Meanwhile in the nation of Boyer the High Boyer has promised whatever aid he can to any and all willing to help fight against the threat of the GDC. he has promised supplies, ships for transport and is even now discussing the possibility of supplying Boyer soldiers to the war effort.

Rumour Has It / Prantz is burning!
« on: December 27, 2010, 03:57:49 am »
Across Rael soldiers are thinned in their ranks from outlying areas of the nation as the bulk are recalled to Prantz after it seems the Cult have initiated a series of strikes on the capital city Prantz.

Days after Lord Rancion III was recalled from Castle Mask news is starting to spill forth.

It seems that despite Rael's best efforts the Cult have infiltrated Prantz through a number of Cult cells and positioned themselves for suicide strikes on different quarters of the city.

At least four groups have been identified by Rofireinite and Rael investigators within the city itself already.

Prantz is in a state of Martial law as Lord Rael has vowed to find the perpetrators of this most insidious offences against his people.

Even as the bulk of his armies make their way back to Prantz, soldiers, milita, fire crews and local citizens in the city work hard to battle the blazing fires that have already consumed a number of lives and are spreading in many areas.

In the Military district a large local militia barracks was targeted in which 150 militia have lost their lives as they slept and the building went up around them.

In the Courts district part of the courthouse was destroyed and some surrounding buildings belonging to various functionaries were lost as well as the lives of a dozen fire fighters when a building collapsed without warning.

An attempt to light the Office of records was thwarted but three buildings nearby have been lost.

At least thirty homes have been lost in the poorer quarter of the city where the houses back up against a large warehouse that stored army supplies.

Several warehouses in the Haft lake district have been lost and a dozen homes are still ablaze.

In the merchants district the main market place is burning out of control as it consumes all the businesses surrounding it.

One wing of the castle where Lord Rael works has also been damaged by fire in the closest any have come to the Lord of Rael in the attacks.

Several signs have been found in the city stating the following:

"Stay out of our business or the damage will be far worse."

For now there have been a large loss of life but numbers will not be known until the blazes are gathered under control and investigators can begin to sift through the mess.

Early indications are that Lord Rael himself has been walking the streets of Prantz inspecting each and every fire and he does not look happy. It's said he held a human women who had lost her husband while she cried and vowed to bring those responsible to Justice.

Rumour Has It / Attack on Moraken's tower in Progress!
« on: December 01, 2010, 02:30:00 am »
Residents of Hlint and the surrounding farmlands have been stunned by a roiling fog that has enveloped the lands to the north of the town where Morakens abode lies. The billowing black and red fog cloud completely surrounds Morakens tower and is filled with angry jagged lightning bursts.

The sounds of loud explosions and tonal reveberations have carried as far as Hlint, many farmers and landholders to the north of the city have been evacuated to within the towns wooden palisade surroundings.

Riders have been dispatched with haste in all directions since the two scouting parties sent towards the ominous display failed to return.

For over four hours now the raging maelstrom has hung like a great pall over the lands to the north of Hlint completely obscuring any vision of Morakens great tower.

Rumour Has It / On the Plains south of Prantz
« on: August 26, 2010, 12:01:29 am »
On the plains south of Prantz one can see a dark sea of pitched tents, horse picket lines, thousands of campfires and attendant servants that serve as the base for what is now well over fifteen thousand troops and is still building. The vast area now holds what is being termed 'The Southern Rael Army'.  Day after day wagonload after wagonload of goods and foodstuffs to provide for such a force arrives from villages and towns all over Rael. The people eager to help in such a grand endeavour.

Tales of fear continues to flood across the plains of dark attacks in the night by devilish Dark Elves, more and more are caught each day, one outside Rangley, one outside Sierra and still the stories come in. People in outlying lands have moved closer to the smaller walled villages in fear of the impending attacks. Nighttime becomes a time of fear for any honest family living in farmsteads across the nation.

From that mighty host on the plains south of Prantz there is finally movement nearly four weeks after Rangley was attacked.

Two units peel away from the host and form up on the road heading south towards Lor.  A 1500 strong detachment of Heavy Cavalry made up of human nobles and lords from in and around Prantz called the 'Iron Horse Legion', and a 500 strong Dwarven Guards Unit with All'ra support begin a march south.

Protected within their ranks is a combined group of nobles, both Human and Dwarven from Prantz. Together with their supply wagons and servants trailing behind them the force heads south.

Rumour Has It / Storytelling Night: Dragons
« on: July 04, 2010, 06:11:39 pm »
Before the time of elves and men
Before the dwarves first worked in stone
And halflings wandered desert sands,
One creature called the world its own

First as gods, then fearsome beasts
These mighty serpents roamed the world
And those who glimpse them, even now
Stand in awe at wings unfurled

Scalding breath and wicked fangs,
Claws and teeth and flashing scales
By these we know the mighty dragon,
Subject of a thousand tales

Wyrmlings hatching from an egg,
Wicked beasts and fearsome foes,
Saviors calling heroes forth
And heralds of the greatest woes

Lords of ice and kings of fire,
Wreathed in mystery and lore--
You may know a hundred tales ...
But would you like to know one more?

Poets, storytellers, bards
And any with a myth or song,
Join us where Twin Dragons ward
For dragon stories all night long.

General Discussion / Negativity

Sorry if I seem negative, ever.  I don't try to be negative, just realistic.  I don't think yes-men accomplish anything, so someone has to be willing to bring up differing views and point out potential problems.

Here's the weird thing: I actually think I'm rather optimistic.  I know.  I said it was weird.  I think we humans have so much more in us than we give.  We could do so much better in every aspect of life if we'd stop being so selfish.  I'm just not idealistic.  I don't think people as a whole will do better without being more or less forced into it.  Yeah, that sucks.  I'd like to think differently, but my inner scientist constantly reminds me that the evidence is completely against it.  The people who are acting on that great potential are overshadowed by the rest of us.
