Layonara Server / Now Taking Gamemaster Applications!!« on: June 10, 2011, 03:19:01 am »
Hello Layonara Community!
It has come around to that time again, where we look around for interested individuals to help grow the Layonaran experience for the community as a whole. If you are interested in giving back to the community that has provided you with countless hours of entertainment, this is one way to make that happen! Below are listed the qualifications, the required duties and the list of questions that we'll need answered so that we can evaluate if you are a good match for the world. Please take some time to consider all of these if you are interested in becoming a Gamemaster for Layonara. Quote Gamemaster Qualifications: Quote Gamemaster Duties:Application Questions (please answer in a response in this thread) 1. How long have you been a member of Layonara? (The minimum is four (4) months of active time in the community.) 2. Are you applying as a part time or full time quest GM? 3. Why do you want to be a GM team member in Layonara? 4. Please describe any GM experience, including any NWN GMing experience. GMing experience, digitally or PnP style is not a prerequisite for a GM position! 5. Please read carefully through the GM team duties and qualifications, if you have not already. This community has always supported the ethic of 'real life comes first' but we will need to know, realistically, if your real life can support your interest and commitment to the world. Please describe, either Layonaran or real life, responsibilities that may conflict with your Gamemaster commitments. Membership to other teams such as LORE or Character Approvals are examples of Layonaran commitments. 6. Please submit an example quest in a PM (addressed to EdtheKet, Rowana and Dorganath). Your quest should be a brief outline of the set up and expected important events during your quest. Please include a few foreseeable side paths players might take and your intentions for working with players on those initiatives. This should be a quest you could run if you are accepted as a GM, though it is by no means required. Your sample quest summary should be between 300 and 500 words in length. Summaries less than 300 or more than 500 words will not be considered and you will be asked to submit again with the proper word length. Applicants without a quest submitted to the Team by the deadline will not be considered during this pass. The applications will close on June 30th, 2011, Midnight Eastern Daylight Time. All qualified applicants will be contacted for an interview by July 5th, 2011. Interviews will take place either in game or via IRC. Interviews must be final by July 20th, 2011, in order to offer invites to new GMs in a timely manner. We look forward to hearing from you all! General Discussion / A Fond Farewell« on: January 08, 2011, 11:39:05 am »
Hi everyone,
I have to say ... it's been a great run! That said, this post is to let the community know that I have just stepped down as a GM. The decision to retire was actually some months in the making, but I stayed on a little longer to make sure my work with Center rolled out smoothly, and to finish off my last commitments to CDQ requests. Time. If only we all could have enough! But with my university days over and my full time job becoming more full time by the day, I know in my heart that I don't have the time for the responsibilities of GMing anymore, and it is time to step aside. My deepest thanks to the community. You are what makes GMing here worth the time we give up. So thanks, for your commitment and passion to the world, for your creativity on quests and during every day roleplay, and for all the support you give the GMs as we try our best to weave stories for you, puppeteer a dozen NPCs at once, and keep the monsters on a short enough leash that you can at least try to solve the world's problems in a non-combative fashion. Mine were always a little unruly, and apologies to whoever they took a swipe at accidentally during a quest. I do seem to recall a few strand refunds during my tenure ... ;-) I can say with honesty, it has been my sincerest pleasure to eavesdrop on all your RP conversations, snoop through your character's backpacks and leave the occasional surprise, bash you on the head with the XP wand from time to time, and torture your characters through development quests! Hope you enjoyed it as much as I did. ~Carillon The following users thanked this post: Drizzlin

Layonara Server / A note on future updates« on: November 06, 2010, 12:41:47 pm »
Hello Layonara Community,
I just wanted to let you all know that I'm trying something different with the way I've done updates. To put it briefly, I'm going to try doing smaller, more frequent updates. Some of them may also be "stealth" updates, meaning that I may not announce them at all. Others may be quick-fix updates, such as those I have done since 3.30 has gone online. So what does this mean? Well, I'm not making any guarantees, but simple changes and quick fixes will hopefully find their way into play more quickly. Also, I'm hoping to keep better pace with plot-relevant changes as well as possibly add some unexpected variability into the world. Such things may not be frequent, as it is still subject to my rather full schedule. However, this is my intent, and I wanted to let you, the community, to know what is going on, so that when you go on your "usual" and find bugbears instead of ogres, for example, you will know why. We'll see how it goes, I guess! The following users thanked this post: Drizzlin

Layonara Server / Version 3.30 is online!« on: October 27, 2010, 08:02:36 pm »
Version 3.30 is online!
This version is a pretty significant update in some ways, and it also requires new HAK files. Please note that I've restructured the “control” HAK file into two files: a “ctrl” HAK and a “res” HAK for size and management reasons. You will need to download both of these files as well as the latest TLK file in order to enter the game. http://nwn.layonara.com/downloads/files/layo_resv3r1.rar (HAK) http://nwn.layonara.com/downloads/files/layo_ctrlv3r10.rar (HAK) http://nwn.layonara.com/downloads/files/layonara_v24.rar (TLK) (NOTE: the All-in-One HAK has not yet been updated) This update contains some initiatives that we've been working on in one sense or the other for several months, and in some cases nearly a year,, and in particular one far reaching initiative that we hope will improve several long-running ills. I'll mention more on this later, but this one in particular is the result of a collaboration between the GM Team as a whole based on feedback and comments from the community. For expediency, I want to quickly thank the entire GM Team, the Plot Team, the Project Team and the community for their various contributions, and specifically, I want to thank (in no particular order) Script Wrecked, Alatriel, Rowana, Eorendil, Pankoki, Carillon Guardian-452 and mixafix for their more direct contributions and for saving me a load of time. And now, onto the meat: Announcing: Center, Brelin Kingdom, Mistone
Once a town of its own right prior to the Dark Ages, the region of land once known as Center has seen a resurgence in recent years. The resettling began with refugees fleeing the destruction and uncertainty brought by the tsunamis that struck the west coast of Mistone. While initially little more than a tent city, Center started to become a crossroads in its own right. Its location along the strategic road between Fort Wayfare and points south helped it to become more than just a transient safe shelter for the displaced. Enterprising merchants set up their tents and wagons, finding the trade and commerce worthwhile. As has often been the story of other towns, an inn was built to serve not only those who ended up staying for a long term but also those traveling along the road. The merchant presence likewise became a fixture, drawing not only a banking presence but also facilities for skilled tradesmen. Merchants migrated away from Fort Wayfare, though this wasn't long lamented by residents, who on the whole felt some relief at having less traffic (and fewer “undesirables” lingering around their town. In keeping with this sentiment, Fort Wayfare petitioned Spellgard to “do something about that portal” in the middle of town. Spellgard agreed, and a team led by Connor Garvill shifted the portal's exit to Center. With the added traffic through every means, Center began to truly thrive and become a hub of activity of all sorts. While still essentially a transient settlement, as it doesn't qualify as a town yet, Center has grown beyond the simpleness of its rebirth into a place worthy of note.
To address one of the biggest problems with v3, Layonara once more has a single starting area: Center. Located south of Fort Wayfare and north of Port Hempstead fields, Center and its surrounding areas represent a complete low-level experience for all new characters. Its status as an unincorporated settlement (at best) makes it open to all races, even those banned from cities and towns throughout the civilized world. That is not to say that they're welcomed by all, but there is either tolerance or numbness in those who might be considered residents. Besides the land mass that is Center, the surrounding areas have been remapped somewhat. Existing areas have been changed and new areas have been added. And of course, there are benches. Along with this, there is a new entry area, which should help introduce new players to the Dragon Storm campaign. As with many things, it is better seen than described, so please, stop by and have a look. We're eager to hear your feedback. As well, why not submit a new character and experience it through new eyes. And since it is such a big thing, it's worthy of special note that Carillon and Pankoki worked quite hard and diligently to bring the Team's vision and plans for Center to life. It is no small feat they accomplished. ------------------------------------------------------------------- With all that said, let's get onto the list... Center: The Center project involves 15 new areas created in or around Center, creating a new hub for the server and completely changing the experience of a first level character entering the game world. Some examples of changes relating to the hub that will help the new character:

Roleplaying / WL frustrated with options offered« on: June 28, 2010, 10:11:21 am »
So now that I have played for quite a few years I have seen a rather strange tendency over the years. Seemingly the player get less and less influence on the world, the WLs(/epics) in particular.
Back in the day epics were really really epic, I mean they were the leaders of their churchs, almost avatars of their gods, dragons, you name it... Now it is all about handing XP out to people who are doing a great job in the gameworld... Not that this is bad for anyone, however the change is... I agree that there was some point in Layonara history where there were too huge a gap between what "normal players" and WL's could do. But right now no one can do anything which seems even more silly than someone can do something. Maybe it is just me, but besides one event that took place a couple of years ago I have been unable to do -anything- what so ever to affect the gameworld. I mean really, it has even gone to the point where even if I don't do something things will happen anyway. So now playing is more like getting told, oh you know this thing will happen in the future, you don't have to do anything it will happen no matter what. ((What I have tried so far: Contacting GMs Involving other players RPing IG Answering IC forum posts)) Well alright, if that is the case why even play, because one of the reasons I really liked playing here was that every action has consequences.. Well that is cool, as long as you can actually do something that matters in the first place. Instead I feel stuck in a place where GM's can make a character ten times stronger than mine and with a hundred times the options while having their morning coffee(At least it feels that way to me, I have no idea how NPCs are approved, but just the fact that Storold doesn't actually have a rank as such makes it very easy to make something better.). So all you are left with is following the arrows on the floor and kill the occasional monster in your way, or of course join the eternal grind towards having all upgrades on all your gear and watch your XP counter tick up towards infinity. General Discussion / The End of a Warrior« on: April 05, 2010, 12:38:12 pm »
*Ty tombs home with Trenton's body and quickly brings it to the Hospital desperately seeking aid...but there is none to give*
A warrior's death was fitting, his life in the service of the mighty Vorax. He lived to fight evil and he lived to teach others to be strong. Hopefully his memory will be lasting, his contribution to the safety of good citizens across Layonara remembered. His victory cry "Feel the Axe of Vorax!" should be written on his gravestone and his fellow warriors in arms should be honored to continue the good work, to fight the good fight. //I've had a blast playing Trenton and I feel lucky to have had the chance to play him as long as I did. Thanks again to the team for instituting the Graceful Plea system that allowed him to come back from his first permanent death. Thank you to all those who enjoyed Trenton's company and who made it so much fun for me to play with you. Your roleplay is superb and you all make Layonara the exceptional experience that it is. CNR Suggestions/Discussion / Gem/Wand/Staff of Dispelling« on: April 04, 2010, 08:15:32 pm »
I've thought about this for a while, and finally decided that it was worth posting as a suggestion - new infusing recipes for gems, wands, and staves to do with Dispel Magic.
Reasoning: These would be useful tools (in all three incarnations) on quests and against enemy spellcasters. Often enough (on quests I've been on and quests I've run, at least) Dispel Magic is employed as a panacea against nasty enchantments. Moreover, because Dispel Magic includes six base classes among those who can cast it, it would be a widely accessible recipe in the infusing ladder. With that said, the proposed items (see attachment):
The nwscript code for insertion into the recipe database is provided here, though some changes will have to be made (and strings filled in) for Layo's code: Code: [Select] //string sKeyToRecipe; // Probably already defined. Comments, concerns, support or opposition, all welcome. The following users thanked this post: Drizzlin

The Dragon Storm Campaign / // Update!« on: March 09, 2010, 06:32:45 am »
Hi guys,
As some of you may have noticed, I haven't been around much for some time. The reason for this is that I am relocating to Mumbai in India together with my family. My company offered me an exciting position in our Mumbai office and we have decided to take them up on the offer. I just arrived here a little more than a week ago and am currently coming up and running on the job as well as finding an apartment and getting to know the place (whoa - its a lot different from Denmark!). I've started out solo, until I have a place for us, and am going back to fetch my family in April. Yesterday I moved into an apartment that has a 256Kbit/sec connection, so needless to say I am somewhat restricted internet-wise. Nevertheless I intend to try to get online sooner or later and hopefully I can at least play a little. Plot-wise this means that I will continue the mini-series that I started - and hopefully soon. I will give you a heads up on that as soon as I've found out whether I can GM or not with my current internet connection. I hope that Steel and his homies are currently recruiting for the next quest episode... they better be! Over and out for now. I'll keep you updated. General Discussion / Stepping Down from GM'ing« on: February 27, 2010, 12:45:15 am »
Well folks, it has come that time for me to step down from being a GM. Thanks to L and the team for allowing me the opportunity to be a part of the team.
I have been on this server for over five years now and GM'ed for the last year or so of it between deployments. It was definitely interesting to see how the server operated behind the curtain. I appreciate all the fun that I had while serving the server. I enjoyed my time helping players, running impromptu quests (my favorite by far), and bringing the world alive by possessing NPCs (especially animals), changing spawns, and keeping players on their toes. There are truly fantastic RP'ers in our community and it is constant. There is almost always someone RPing in some form or fashion all of the time. There are different styles and different levels, thank you for the education from that side of the field. Thanks again, twidget The following users thanked this post: Drizzlin
