General Discussion / Re: It has been a bit

Here's a link to discord:

https://discord.com/channels/299576918058205186/299576918058205186

I just copied that off my browser so may not work.  You'll need to setup an account and look for the layonara group.

Also, Layo has now increased the level cap to 45 so Wren might be able to squeeze in Dev Crit like he always wanted to.

Cheers

Great to see you back!  We miss Wren the giant killer barbarian!

If you make a test chaacter then Orth can move your old characters over.  Orth has been busy of late so I'm not sure how quick he will get to it.  You may not need your cd key.  Yes you will need a new copy of nwn ee.

If you can get on discord that is good because Orth and everyone else respond much quiker there.

Cant wait to see u IG!

General Discussion / The time has come...
« on: November 11, 2012, 10:06:39 pm »
Greetings Layonara Community,

It is with mixed feelings that I announce my retirement from the develoment of NWN-based Layonara after doing this for seven years and some change.  This is a move I have planned for some time (and almost did several times), and which has been needed for some time, but I am only just now making it a reality.  My development focus is now shifting completely to the MMO effort and Layonara's long-term future.

To keep NWN Layonara going in a development sense, I now officially pass the torch to the capable hands of Script Wrecked, who will now be responsible for all future fixes and updates.

I know you've all heard this plenty of times, but...this is not a “good-bye” letter. I am still very committed to and invested in Layonara and its long-term future. I still like to play here even (when the stars align properly), GM here and participate in this community. I do not see these things changing.  My presence will remain, but my fingerprints will no longer be on the updates.

There's not a lot more to say here, so join with me in congratulating Script Wrecked on his new position.

General Discussion / orth checking in.
« on: February 02, 2012, 12:14:20 am »
Hello friends, old and new. It's been a while since I've been able to sit down and take a breath but I promised myself I would take the time to catch up on what I've been up to and some of the things that have to be done on the technical end over the coming month.

To start, I wanted to say that Layonara is with my heart every day. The friends I made and the moments I shared in its fantasy setting will be cherished moments I'll hold through my whole life with no regret. The past year I've been at a distance, occasionally trying to force my way back into the magic that I know makes me feel like only roleplaying can make me feel. It's been there for short whiles but real world priorities get in the way and days away become weeks and then months. I'm not going to try to explain nor am I sure I even know why, it just happens.

Life's been pretty good. I've become a bit of a sports nut, I even bought season tickets to the Blue Jays for this summer. Nothing new on the love side of things, though a kiss stolen here and there. Work has had me with a lot less time than I was afforded a few years ago but I remain physically and mentally very healthy.

As with playing, my desire for working on the MMO has had to be forced and again other worldly concerns leave me getting side tracked then ultimately not having the fortitude to jump back into the development. I am making progress in a core area though and when I can catch a breath and bare down for the final touches I'll be eager to move on to the areas that others have continued to bear down upon.

Over the coming month there's going to be a few headaches from the technical end. One of our servers is old and has to be updated, this means I have to make a decision to either stay with our existing server setups or consider moving all of our servers to a cloud based setup. I've not made that decision yet and it's a pretty complicated one as Dorganath would be able to attest to as we discussed it on IRC. Once I make that decision I will get a better idea of downtime for all our servers, web, irc, nwn etc.

I touched on the core area I'm working on with the MMO and that's focused on the web end of things. Using the versatility and module rich Drupal CMS I'm developing both a front end to a new updated community site and a back end to the MMO database structure. This could mean some heavy work needed on LORE and perhaps *cringe* if I'm really feeling adventurous, I would transfer the entire forum to drupal's forum. Alternatively there are modules that allow both vBulletin and Drupal work side by side. I wonder, do any of you have Drupal experience?

So I guess that's kind of it for my update. I'll be informing you via the Important World Announcements forum about server downtimes as soon as I can possibly know and with as advanced notice as possible. I apologize in advance if this gets in the way of some scheduled quests.

My best,
James

...a tiny figure darts. Dressed in green, she is surely not a mouse. A small sickle, hardly capable of cutting wheat, is buried beneath a quill of quills on her back. Is that a glint of magical light from a sharp edge there in the corner? No, the glint comes from a flash of smile accompanied by a small clap and giggle. There is a bee buzzing amongst the tombs of the Great Library. What will she discover beneath the dust? Whispers perhaps? Of dragons, she hopes.

Layonara Server / Short Notice: Plot Catch-up events
« on: December 28, 2011, 03:05:50 am »
All,

I know this is short notice, but Rowana and I will be holding a Plot catch-up event this Friday/Saturday (timezone dependent).  The purpose of this event is to discuss and answer questions regarding the plot, state of the world and so forth.

This is an OOC event, and it will be in a moderated question-and-answer format (or at least that's the plan).  Please respect the procedure (to be given during the event) so that information can be conveyed with a minimum of difficulty for everyone.  This will essentially amount to asking questions in an orderly manner rather than everyone blurting out questions all at once.

The intent is to cover the "common knowledge" information that everyone (or almost everyone) would know. As such, it will not matter which character one brings (if one has multiples), since this information would eventually filter into general knowledge in some form or the other.  It is up to you to portray the information however your various characters might.

While we may not be able to get everyone or accommodate all schedules and time zones, we have decided on three events at different times:

Event 1
Event 2
Event 3

It is not necessary to attend all sessions, though you are welcome to do so.

These events are open to all. There are no level requirements. Prior involvement with the plot is not necessary.

Our intent is to start things rolling again in January, so this information will serve as reminders for those familiar with what happened and background for everyone.

The Dragon Storm Campaign / 6 months after Briardusk
« on: October 21, 2011, 11:19:51 pm »
Briardusk, the name remembered well by soldiers of Hurm and those other armies who participated in years of warfare on Hilm soil as the final stage in reclaiming their lands from the hands of the Green Dragon Cult, led by the malefactor known as Molvaren.

It has taken just over 6 months to clear the city of the memory of the Drach ori, the slave pens, their mad leader and all that he enacted their. Dark labs for experiments on slaves and the creation of abominations. Who knows the extents to what was truly done in the dark places beneath the city. Thanks to the Grannoch giants, Rael dwarven engineer squads and so many other groups Briardusk was beginning to rebuild.

Once the fighting was done in Briardusk more legions from The newly established Siphe Principality joined the intial ones and worked with Hilm legions to reestablish the borders of Hilm. Various skirmishes occured along the borders over the months that followed until finally reports began to arrive in Hilm that once more all border posts had been restored and garrisoned.

Immediately plans were put into effect for the next six months to 2 years to provide a massive building program to provide better protections for the border garrisons, to rebuild Sundance and Briardusk and a dozen other communities across Hilm, ruined by the war.

Sir Lance took up his role under Lord Alexander to oversee the rebuilding of Hilm even as they began to sketch out what the liklihood would be of them ever trying to reclaim Kuhl for the Queen.

Many were released from service but their names listed for recall once it was decided if any action would even be possible.

Lord Rael offered a five year placement garrison of 5000 mixed Raelite soldiers at Briardusk and an open offer of more support if and when they deicded to strike at Kuhl. After the other supporters of Hilm heard about Lord Raels offer many also came forward offering other types of support as well.

Thus it remains at the moment, Hilm is rebuilding its strength, rebuilding its broken land. The Principality of Siphe builds a new fortress over the bones of the Fort of Last Hope and people prepare and wait and watch Kuhl to see and wonder what it is Molvaren will plan next.

General Discussion / Apologies
« on: September 18, 2011, 05:52:26 am »
Hey everyone,

I want to apologise for my relative inactivity on the quest calendar. I see my role as GM as 99.9% as that of quest provider and I have been below par in this role for the last few weeks.

Want to hear my excuse? Probably not, it's nothing too exciting anyway. Just work, work and more work. If people would just stop assaulting each other, selling drugs, stealing things and generally treat others as they themselves would want to be treated, I would have heaps more time to run quests!!

That said, I have one more week of work craziness before things return to normal and I hope I shall be able to run a scheduled open-to-all quest every week.

Cheers,

Pseudonym

upcoming auction at the Silver Buckle AND
can be turned in at that event or after for
credit to buy equipment at the Angels Guild!

Donation slips for full boxes of food to The Foundation or to Tilmar/Corsain or the filled boxes will be coin of the realm for the upcoming Silver Buckle auction (// http://forums.layonara.com/calendar.php?do=getinfo&e=17974&day=2011-8-30 ). Each slip or box has equal value in bidding on the auction items.

In addition, representatives of the Angels Guild will be at the auction to give you credit for any slips or boxes not successfully used in the bidding. In addition, slips or boxes may be turned in to the Angels for credit from that time through Sunday night. See below for details.

The Angels Guild will follow the Silver Buckle's rules on what is acceptable as donations. During and immediately after the event, all boxes and slips will be worth $2000 credit each. This is offered to encourage more people, especially less experienced adventurers, to attend the event.

To encourage further gathering and donations, the following chart will be used to determine value of items turned in to the Angels after the Buckle closes and before the offer ends at midnight EDT on Sunday, September 4. Donations for the relief of famine in the Boyer Kingdom will also be accepted.
Value for donation| true for each| True per box|

For all those places we haven't been to in a long while and maybe even forgot?

Was wandering the desert today and completely forgot about an old area set that's a heck of a lot of fun (if it's still there).

It'd be neat meet in center maybe and try and think of those places you never actually think to go.

Center - 10 PM EST, Tonight, Levels 5-20ish?

Rumour Has It / Zahid Al Safi - Dead
« on: August 08, 2011, 10:29:44 am »
Human lives are brief, lasting little longer than a child's writing in sand. Their legacy lies in their works, whether they are children of the flesh or children of the mind.

Zahid Al Safi, aged 69, died as he was born, wandering the Great Desert. After fighting for Sederra against the Green Dragon Cult, he ultimately succumbed to old age. He will not likely be remembered beyond the absence of an old man on a bench, or a shouting figure at the side of a Center road. Perhaps he never found the oneness he sought, but he smiled and died in peace. His journal, like his body, moulders in the desert's shifting dunes. He breaks down, and becomes one with the sands.

« on: July 20, 2011, 10:16:30 pm »
Hey everyone,
This is just a short note, to let everyone know I am still alive... However, due to problems with my computer, and just general being busy, its unlikely I will be around much. I really didn't mean to let this absence last so long, it just sort of happened.

I'd also like to offer my sincere apologies to everyone I had RP with - and an even bigger apology to the GMs who I had been working with, and my fellow CAs.

I will try and pop in to check PMs, if anyone wants to get a hold of me. Hope everything is going well in Layoland :-)
