Introduce Yourself -- Game Masters / GM Ravemore
« on: May 26, 2023, 12:32:32 am »
I’m playing from the Eastern US time zone and I'm a returning GM. I was on the team back in 2011. I first started playing Layonara in 2006. I met a lot of really cool people here. I come from a long, long roleplaying background. Anyway, real life pulled me away with a cross country move for work, my master’s degree program, and later a cancer diagnosis for both my wife and I. We both beat it and I’m pushing 5 years now in the clear. The kids are grown up, graduated college, have good jobs, and are mostly on their own. I’ve been back to Layonara since last fall and I’m now ready to do some part time GM work. So… a little bit about my GM style.

1.) I enjoy putting together short impromptu quest sessions most. My ideal groups are smaller. I’m likely to limit participation to no more than 3-6 players. If I schedule a quest its usually “first come first serve.” I love dropping random monsters or encounters on players without formal quests. If you are in the Deep and start seeing weird stuff and it starts becoming much more difficult… A good bet is that I’m probably in the server.

2.) After I have had a fair amount of time re-learning the tools and lore I will run CDQ’s, but there are some caveats. Characters need to be below 10th level. You need to have a journal with enough material for me to work with. Although I will run Corath themed quests, I will not involve myself in ones affecting leadership positions in the church or other affiliated organizations. My main player character could potentially create conflicts (real or imagined.) If I get more than two pending CDQ’s I’ll shut myself off from more signups until further notice. It might be a long time too. I’m not keen on the idea of running them one after another continuously. For the time being I am closed, but I'm open to discussing future ones though now via PM's in Discord.

3.) Good RP will get you good XP… Excellent RP will get you excellent XP. No RP will get you a rust monster.

4.) Actions have consequences… some can be long lasting. Some might be awesome. Some might make you cry.

5.) I’m kind of picky about sleeping/resting. You don’t have to ask permission, but out in the wild places of the world, camps should be set up and night watches placed. Study your spell books, talk with each other a little bit, eat a little food, etc. In towns I don’t want to see you dropping in the middle of the busy street to rest. Find a place that makes sense.

6.) Loot should be split among all players at the end of the quest round-robin style. True should be evenly divided. No hiding or stealing… even if your class or alignment makes sense.

7.) Please have some patience with my use of mechanics and lore... it has been a long time since I have done this work.

8.) I reserve the right to make changes to this later.

Character Development Quests (CDQ's) / Lilium (CDQ)
« on: April 08, 2020, 10:15:03 am »
 Lilium (CDQ)
Available for CDQs only at this point!!!

Rules and guidelines:

  • As I only run CDQs at the moment, I will limit the maximal number of participants to 3 (the requester is already included). Anything else will be considered as a GCDQ in my eyes.
  • The quest will be focused on the main character, meaning any other possible participants may aid your character, but should not overtake the quest.
  • While planning the quest, I will keep your character in my mind, meaning any of my quests can be done solo. Of course, the difficulty may increase the more participants are present.
  • During planning I may ask you for additional information regarding your character. If I request them, be assured that they are crucial for planning the quest and thus do not hesitate and give me proper and elaborate responses.
  • Running a quest does not automatically result in a successful completion. Depending on the choices made within it, it may result in a failure.
  • Remember, actions do have consequences, may they be good or bad.
  • Please come up with a good reason why you want me to run the quest. I am aware of the current quest situation, but I will refuse to run quests solely on the purpose just so that there is one around.
  • Once your apply for a CDQ here in this thread, I will get in touch with you via PM when I get to it.
  • Tailoring quests to the participant(s) does take time. Please respect this and give me proper time to come up with everything. No nagging. I will get to it, given my RL obligations. Failure to respect this may result in cancellation of said quest and you will have to reapply again. Seeing one of my player characters around online does not mean I am not focusing on the quests, but after a busy day I may just need some time off. I think we all have been there.

What to expect and not to expect on my quests?

  • As the GM, I provide a framework for the quest. You have to actively get involved in the setting. I won’t drag the main character along and tell them what to do. That is up to the character. It is their quest.
  • Do not expect an easy pass on the goal. You have to work actively to achieve your set goals.
  • Expect that your actions have consequences. I cannot stress this enough. I don’t mind altering the whole planned out scenario to reflect the choices made during the early stages of the quest.
  • Expect quests that are mostly story-driven. Many of the quests I led in PnP settings did not rely on combat at all. I am not saying that there will be no combat at all, but depending on the setting and / or situation you may run into little or no encounters. The reason behind this is quite simple: I think this approach offers players a better approach and setting to actively develop their character character during the quest.
  • NWN is a limited and restrictive when it comes to its mechanics and which might not work well within the quest. Thus, do not rely too heavily on the mechanics. I expect you to keep this in mind while participating in one of my quests.

How often and when do I run quests?

  • I live in Europe which means I will run quests within reasonable hours for myself, mainly during afternoon / evening (GMT+2). During weekends I may also be available in GMT mornings. Please keep in mind that due to RL obligations and family reasons I cannot be available for quests all the time.
  • Due to RL obligations I will only run around 2-3 CDQs during a year. Keep that in mind while applying. Depending on the backlog, you may have to wait for a longer period until I can focus on your quest.

Even though I set some rules and boundaries, we are all here to have fun and enjoy the quests. I work hard to make the CDQs enjoyable for all participants.

Current CDQ:
1.
In Planning:
1. Gilshem Ironstone - Thhakuk
2. Xiaobeibi – Martlet A Swift
Pending:

Loaner Chest - Crafter's Buff Items - Saddlebag Pawn Shop

As an experiment, Saddlebag Pawn at 181 Port Hempstead Fields is offering a chest of loaner gear to aid crafters in their endeavors.

The Crafter's Loaner Buff Items chest is in the main hall, on the left.

All items should be borrowed only just prior to crafting.
All items must be returned just after finishing crafting.
If the items have been helpful, consider leaving a donation in the Crafter's Loaner Buff Items chest, such as something you've crafted, or something you've smelted, or gear, or coin.

When borrowing items, please leave a note of what you've borrowed (// in this forum thread //).
When returning items, please modify your note.

Examples of some of the items in the chest: Nymph Cloak, Headband of Intellect, Bracers of Dexterity, Boots of Striding, Lesser Gauntlets of Ogre Power, various Tier I and Tier II rings and amulets.

This experiment is to be of service to crafters and to inspire crafters to provide crafted goods to Saddlebag Pawn.

General Discussion / Blast from the Past
« on: August 02, 2019, 07:48:18 pm »
I stumbled back to the Layonara website today just to see if there was any life still around on the website.  I was pleasantly surprised to find the community, although reduced, still alive.  I was looking at my registration date, almost 15 years ago.  Wow!  Perhaps one-day the Dark Priestess will walk the world of Layonara again.  Best wishes!

Introduce Yourself / Hello old and new friends!!!
« on: June 10, 2019, 10:39:15 am »
After quite a few years and with the Gamespy snafu behind us, Kyle Pandorn is back. I'm almost a year in retirement and it is good to be back on Layonara. Kyle is semi-retired, but is still willing to put the armor on and get into trouble.  :)

Thanks to everyone for helping us get a lot of the bugs squashed and making the migration a lot smoother than I thought it would be.

We will be running a bonus event for the rest of the month of May to say thanks! All Fortune, XP and GP multipliers have been increased.

I also want to measure progression a bit and try to find the fine line between character progression and time spent. I'm not sure what the end multipliers will be but I'll collect some data during this event and perhaps set XP, GP and Fortune at a value somewhere between regular and bonus events. Or I may just leave it be :P

Something stirs below the town of Center and the townsfolk look to the new faces moving about town for aid. A rough scrawled notice is posted in the inn and trade hall:

*Looking to start up a group of first level characters to adventure around the world once or twice a week, as long as our schedules don't conflict. :) We will start in Center*

First off, thank you to everyone for quickly reporting the bugs and having patience as we work through the kinks. This was a significant update and there was bound to be some niggling issues here and there.

Now some random notes.

  • The old 1.69 server will continue to run for a while as we make sure everything's okay and there's no need to fall back to it or log in on that end to check something. Characters who continue to play on 1.69 will be able to be migrated by hand.
  • There may be some changes to lore to open up some of the areas that are currently inaccessible.
  • For the most part, I will be dealing with the administrative end of things for NWN now. Dorganath and rowana are still accessible but they're more in the background.
  • Project team members will be welcome should you have interest in building new areas or contributing in other ways.
  • All old information has been ported to https://wiki.layonara.com but we need to add structure. Use the search functionality if you're looking for something.
  • There will be another bonus period starting soon.
  • If you're having trouble accessing your characters from the vault, create a test character and let me know the name of your test character and I will move your PCs over
  • The address is ee.layonara.com:5121, we'll also show up under the server listing

A further note on Layonara lore

Layonara's lore is a bit muddled with general staleness as the time has passed, among other things. We ask that you do your best to work with what you know right now. Things may have to change a bit to suit some planned improvements to NWN, so please do your best to work with what's necessary for you to enjoy your time here. The future you create through NWN will still be decided by you the player, but for the most part, that will stay as NWN lore. It may so happen that canon Layonara lore will diverge through other outlets and production in the future, but that doesn't mean NWN Layonara is not true. Much like comic book timelines, it's all true and meant to be enjoyed.

If you have any questions on this or any other things, feel free to let me know.

All the best,
orth

Time for a bit of an update on some of the changes, some are done by me, some are in NWN:EE, some are community enhancements:

  • PCs can now use all three ammo slots for the same ammunition using the =c rangedfocus command. This allows PCs to queue up 3 sets of different arrows to progress through instead of NWN automatically grabbing a random stack when you run out.
  • Many minimap and walkmesh fixes
  • The "grave" system has been revamped. Only the PC (and DMs) who died will see a special marker where they died. Other PCs will no longer see a headstone. This was to avoid some of the OOCness of a physical grave being there which isn't really correct
  • Most subrace and prestige class bonuses are now hard coded, that means if your subrace is +2 Strength then it's not considered a "buff" but rather your character has that value changed at the core
  • Combat modes are now toggleable, meaning if you use Power Attack or Expertise you turn it on and off with a toggle, it doesn't break when you move.
  • The entire polymorph engine has been revamped helping to avoid some of the issues that came up with polymorph/wildshape/elemental shape etc
  • Many of the stock tilesets have been improved with a visual facelift
  • Bartering gives a lot more feedback so PCs have a record of trades in their chat logs, also autosave no longer cancels a barter
  • PCs can set their size to give a bit of a more custom look, size can be tiny, small, normal, large, huge. Currently a PC can use this as often as they want but please only set it with the setting that you want, experiment and then stick to it. Changing of size is logged and we don't want to see a PC manipulating it on a whim whenever they feel like it
  • The dynamic names system has gone through a complete revamp (I even wrote the C++ for the NWNX plugin) so I've tweaked it for Layonara. PC Names show up normally on the Player List so tells are easier.
  • Vendors no longer need to be "triggered" to fill their inventory the first time they're spoken to
  • Whirlwind was fixed

Layonara Server / Neverwinter Nights Player Appreciation Event
« on: August 31, 2017, 02:06:40 pm »

Greetings all!Now that the dates are final for the Neverwinter Nights Player Appreciation Days (hereafter NWPAD), we are planning the server’s participation as well! Yay!The event itself runs from July 10th to July 25th. We encourage you guys to go check out the other participating servers. They have some neat little prizes and things you can do (for funsies of course!). I believe there’s going to be some postings (probably linked to from here) to tell you about all the places you can go.

Layonara will be hosting a 7-ish day event during that time period when folks from other places can come check us out. This is how that’s going to work:

  • We’re going to open up the server with a temporary password that is open to the public. (Sorry to anyone using auto dialers!)

  • No character applications will be necessary for the duration of our event. This includes you guys! If you want to just do some kinda fun thing for a couple of days, please feel free.

  • While no applications are necessary, we will purge the characters created in this time frame UNLESS, you a) state the intentions to apply in the character apps or b) apply in the character apps within 30 days of the closure of our event. For those only stating intentions, it needs to be done in 30 days, barring some special circumstances, in which case, PLEASE let us know ASAP.

  • There will be a post specific to the server explorers who might come check us out posted on the forums with the rules of engagement for our portion of the event. Please, please help new folks find that post so that they understand what is happening. Most of them will have found it for the password but we don’t want anyone who plays here to lose their character that they might want to keep and stick around for a while if they don’t see the details.

  • During this period, we will be having a non-canon period. This means, the RP that happens in this time frame doesn’t necessarily count. It frees the new folks from having to read up on lore, it frees you guys of having to worry about how to ICly react when someone introduces themselves as an apprentice of Drizzt/Elminster/Powerpuff Girls/A Rat Named Splinter etc. Just roll with it, though you’re welcome to offer lore information (in the form of where to go read up if they are interested, not the corrective/possibly finger wagging kind of way) via tell if you like. We’ll put out a few more details on this when we make the open post. It is pretty much like it sounds, though please still plan on using IC dialogs and // for OOC stuff.

  • LASTLY! There will be a funsie little collection item that we will be providing. It’s going to be located in the starting area, and you are welcome to grab one if you are participating in the event between servers etc. It’s part of an overall collection that goes between all the servers participating in the NWPAD event.

We are going to try to run some non-canon events during this time. Right now that’s not nailed down due to the time frame not having been sorted out until just recently. We would also love it if people would coordinate their own player events and post them on the calendar so folks can plan when they might want to jump in and play here. If you can hurry and get them on the calendar we will link to them on our post to the public when that goes up!

We hope everyone has fun! If you have any helpful suggestions for the event or questions about our part in it, please feel free to post below!

Thanks!

Layonara Server / New Character Backup System
« on: March 14, 2017, 08:49:03 pm »
Hello again good friends,It's been a while again, I hope you are all well. I don't know how to apologize for the character corruption issues we've had over the past while and my poor attempts at correcting it but I've now spent 2 days on a better system and I hope it gives you the confidence to play and not be worried now. I'm truly sorry to each and every one of you for the headaches that were caused, you should have the confidence that things like this won't happen. I also want to thank Dorg from the bottom of my heart for dealing with these issues while I was in another mode.So as I mentioned above, I'm also here to let everyone know a new version control backup system has been configured. All characters are backed up hourly and controlled with version control. This means we can go back hour by hour to see where a character file may have been corrupted and find the last good .bic file. There should no longer be any more incidents of character files getting corrupted and the last known backups being way too old.The original issue of the server filling up and running out of drive space which caused these 0 byte files SHOULD be fixed but I'm not entirely sure, it's hard to test. Either way, the new backup system will keep things much safer.Always lurking,-orth

General Discussion / Master resigning as GM
« on: December 17, 2015, 12:49:01 pm »
I have taken a long look at this and have tried getting back into being a GM again but it is not in me any more. I have great respect for what everyone is doing here. I know me leaving is not going to be much of a streain on the team as I have not done much in over a year. The team knows the details about what has been going on with me but suffice to say I have had quite a few personal and work related issues that has kept me away. The biggest reason I threw myself into this game was because my son played. My son has not played here for years but I continued  because I needed to work on writting my thoughts down and I loved the people who played here. I do not need to work on my writting any more and prefer vocal interaction verses a text based game. I still love the team, the people who play here and the concept of  the Layo universe. It just does not meet my current needs in a game and will not for a while. When you find it a chore just to log on to play it is time to find another game. Even after a year of not playing I find it a chore to log on and play.If you want ot get ahold of me send me a PM as it is linked to my e-mail account and I will get a notification of the PM. I usually reply with in 24 hours of getting the PM.MJ

Layonara Server / Holiday Notice
« on: December 09, 2015, 08:56:44 pm »
Greetings fellow Layonarans! The holiday season is upon us once again. As a result, time is usually a precious commodity for everyone, including our GM Team. As such, the lack of quest events will likely persist until the last part of the month at least. Please bear with us during this busy time. For those who have characters corrupted by the recent server problems, we'll be getting with you on the matter of restoration.  For those of you wanting a restoration of your items, it would be helpful to us if you were to prepare a list of your equipment to the best of your memory. We're prepared to consider all good-faith requests in this situation. On the flip side of things, we are intending to to hold another bonus event starting December 26th and likely continuing throughout the month of January.Enjoy!

Layonara Server / System Failure, Character Corruption
« on: December 06, 2015, 12:34:37 pm »
Hello all,I wish I was posting better news but there has been an issue as you know recently with the system acting quirky and some characters going missing and I've finally figured out why and the consequences. The servers file system was filling up dramatically with some rogue logs that would get exponentially bigger and then it would get filled to capacity. This caused the server to not save characters properly as there was no more room on the drive. I've corrected this issue but the issue is going to be a headache for some. The following characters are corrupted and there are no reasonable backups for them, the backup system overwrote both their daily backup and weekly backups with the corrupt file and I have no other known backups. It's a shame the weekly backup ran just a few hours before I realized there was a serious filesystem problem.
  • Charm2009/Raven
  • Anthony Moore/Sam Night
  • xsweetpeax/Esme Minniwyn
  • Lord Cove/Maran
  • Lord Cove/Kagen
  • MateoEll/Garadel Kamek (weekly backup never even got this one)
The following characters are corrupted but I do have a weekly backup:
  • Charm2009/Kenzie
  • Marlon55/Leon
We have been discussing the best way to restore the characters, we know how much XP they last had due to the db. We know some of the partial equipment by being able to somewhat disassemble the corrupted files but we have been trying to figure out the simplest means to restore your character exactly to how they have been. I have also been trying to find another backup from a month ago on my personal computer but it looks like I deleted it.Some of the options we're considering is:a) Just restore the character exactly to how they were by giving you the XP and the items and working on the honour system for items/gold on person.b) Give you the opportunity to create a new character (must be approved) with same XP as lost character but no equipment.c) Restore your character with the proper XP but give no equipment but a certain number of Fortune for you to decide whether to try to buy new stuff or use it for XP at your own discretion as you see fit.We are open to any suggestions you wish to make. We feel extremely bad about this and want you to have faith in the systems and we'll be happy to correct them as soon as we can. We will probably handle each of these on a case by case basis, but please feel free to discuss any other ideas you may have. The two characters whom I have weekly backups will be a lot easier to restore, especially if they haven't done a whole lot since last weekend.-orthP.S. All other things like housing/bank/storage/fortune are still on the DB and have not been lost in any capacity. It's just the physical bic file that's gone all messy.
