Introduce Yourself -- Game Masters / Re: GM Ravemore
« on: June 04, 2023, 04:01:31 pm »
An Additional Note:

I will often incorporate what I call forum roleplay into my open quests. This takes the form of a Topic posted that IC actions and descriptions can be posted to. It is sort of an offline, turn based form of roleplay in between in-game quest sessions. It will often develop things or set the stage for the in-game action.

Introduce Yourself -- Game Masters / GM Ravemore
« on: May 26, 2023, 12:32:32 am »
I’m playing from the Eastern US time zone and I'm a returning GM. I was on the team back in 2011. I first started playing Layonara in 2006. I met a lot of really cool people here. I come from a long, long roleplaying background. Anyway, real life pulled me away with a cross country move for work, my master’s degree program, and later a cancer diagnosis for both my wife and I. We both beat it and I’m pushing 5 years now in the clear. The kids are grown up, graduated college, have good jobs, and are mostly on their own. I’ve been back to Layonara since last fall and I’m now ready to do some part time GM work. So… a little bit about my GM style.

1.) I enjoy putting together short impromptu quest sessions most. My ideal groups are smaller. I’m likely to limit participation to no more than 3-6 players. If I schedule a quest its usually “first come first serve.” I love dropping random monsters or encounters on players without formal quests. If you are in the Deep and start seeing weird stuff and it starts becoming much more difficult… A good bet is that I’m probably in the server.

2.) After I have had a fair amount of time re-learning the tools and lore I will run CDQ’s, but there are some caveats. Characters need to be below 10th level. You need to have a journal with enough material for me to work with. Although I will run Corath themed quests, I will not involve myself in ones affecting leadership positions in the church or other affiliated organizations. My main player character could potentially create conflicts (real or imagined.) If I get more than two pending CDQ’s I’ll shut myself off from more signups until further notice. It might be a long time too. I’m not keen on the idea of running them one after another continuously. For the time being I am closed, but I'm open to discussing future ones though now via PM's in Discord.

3.) Good RP will get you good XP… Excellent RP will get you excellent XP. No RP will get you a rust monster.

4.) Actions have consequences… some can be long lasting. Some might be awesome. Some might make you cry.

5.) I’m kind of picky about sleeping/resting. You don’t have to ask permission, but out in the wild places of the world, camps should be set up and night watches placed. Study your spell books, talk with each other a little bit, eat a little food, etc. In towns I don’t want to see you dropping in the middle of the busy street to rest. Find a place that makes sense.

6.) Loot should be split among all players at the end of the quest round-robin style. True should be evenly divided. No hiding or stealing… even if your class or alignment makes sense.

7.) Please have some patience with my use of mechanics and lore... it has been a long time since I have done this work.

8.) I reserve the right to make changes to this later.

Rumour Has It / Vengeance for a Slight

Stygian is weaving his way among the stalls of the Leringard market looking for interesting odds and ends. He is nibbling out of a small bowl of shaved ice covered in blackberry syrup. While licking the wooden spoon he is abruptly bumped by a burly man wearing the badge of a member of the dockworker’s guild and his shaved ice tumbles to the ground. He stares at it for a few minutes… anger rising in him like a furnace being coaxed to life. The man growls at Stygian “Stay out of my way little man.” Stygian smiles. “Forgive me sir. I should have been paying closer attention to my surroundings. I was looking for rare magical items masquerading as mundane junk. Luckily, I found a few…” He pauses as the large man shows immediate interest and he responds... “I wish I could find something magical to bring that shrew of a wife of mine to heel.” Stygian smiles. There is an evil glint in his eye that almost dissuades the large man… almost. Stygian says, "my name is Adder, and for a simple bowl of shaved ice with some blackberry syrup I’ll provide you the cure for your unfortunate marital situation. No other charge.” The man turns and hurriedly makes his way to the shaved ice vendor.

When the man returns with Stygian’s bowl of shaved ice, they head to a nearby alleyway for some privacy. Stygian extends his hand and opens it. Inside is a small leather pouch. “There is a magical dust inside this pouch. When your wife is in the kitchen cutting up the meat for your dinner, pour this dust into your palm and toss it into the air in a way that it will cover both of you… then tell her how you feel about her being a shrew. I assure you, things will resolve themselves.” The man takes the pouch with a grunt and quickly leaves without so much as a thank you. *Stygian chuckles as he leaves and wonders how things will turn out with all that Star Dust of Grand floating in the air in such a small room full of cutlery.

Development Journals and Discussion / Re: Journal of Stygian Achnuman

*Stygian is riding his black horse along the old worn road, deep in the Gloomwood. Mesgard is nearby. Perhaps another hour of travel*

For the third time in the last hour I have caught a glimpse of an undead creature in the brush watching me. Assessing me. I ignore them because I have no fear. I am sure they can sense who I am. It is possible I may have even created some of them. *dry chuckle and wry grin* They can recognize the taint of the Mortis Mentis marking me as an Oraculis of the Veneficus. The Oraculum Mortis took my measure and did not find me lacking, and now I am bound to him and growing in power. The font of his knowledge and resources has no end or depth. It is truly endless in all sense of the word… and I drink from it like a man stranded in the desert with no water walking into an oasis. *Stygian unconsciously rubs his side where he cut his own rib from his body. The lingering pain that will likely never leave is a constant reminder of his allegiance*

*Stygian has been in Arnax for several months training with the Priests and Priestesses. Learning the formal dogmas and rites of the clergy. They are suspicious of him because he is Veneficus, but they recognize that he has been blessed by the Dark Lord and chosen to walk this path. They will never accept him, but they will tolerate him for the time being. He reports regularly to the Oraculum Mortis on the inner working of the temple and the rumors and whispers uttered in the shadowy depths of its halls.

As Stygian approaches the first outbuildings of Mesgard he can see the cloaked figure of the Mayor waiting. He bows to Stygian in deep respect, “Stipatio, welcome back. As always, your presence is delightful.” *There is no joy or excitement in his voice* *Stygian nods, nudges his heels into the side of his horse, and continues in the direction of the Maligare’s headquarters.

Introduce Yourself / Great to be Back!!
« on: October 30, 2022, 04:23:59 pm »
I would like to thank everyone for all of the warm “welcome backs” in game and Discord. Coming back to Layonara after so many years has been a treat. Sort of like seeing family after a long absence. Looking forward to spending more time in game becoming familiar with the locations, experiencing the changes, and spreading the evil of Corath across the lands once more.

Rumour Has It / A Jolly Roger is hoisted over 102 Hlint
« on: July 13, 2022, 10:21:37 pm »
Sipping on his morning coffee, the realtor thumbs through his ledgers and is suddenly startled when the door swings open, crashing nearly off its hinges.

"I need a place to lay low, nice an private loike. no questions asked," grumbles the sullen one-eyed dwarf through a long black matted beard.  The stench on his breath a sickening sweet mix of rye and bloodlust.

"That will be a hefty order sir... for on such as you? Fifty-Thousand."  the realtor chortles, expecting this ill-kept vagabond to be priced out of the market.  "And we don\t offer lines of credit"

"Fifty Thousand? That all?" the dwarf casually pulls open a loop from his enchanted bag and digs through its contents as a prospector of many things. "Ye take coin, emerald, mithral, ruby or skulls?"

"Just the coin, thank you." The merchant simmers.

With a jingle, a single burlap sack, stained with the blood of countless giants, ogres, trollocs and various other beasties lands with a crack on the table, which creaks and buckles under its weight.

"You could have just had a bank note issued... it's two doors down you know"

"Yeah, I know! Now get to counting, I ain't got all day!"

And with that, the dwarven pirate chortled and marches off to his new home overlooking the lake of bountiful carp.  The lawn soon begins to clutter with the skulls of various exotic monsters, artfully placed as any garden gnome.

A new reign of terror begins.

Rumour Has It / A call goes out for mercenaries

It is made known among the sell-swords of Vehl, that an employer is looking to pay handsomely for a job on Dregar.  Those that have sought more details are quick to say that it is not a job for the faint of heart.  Any interested should leave word at the One-Eyed Harpy that they wish to speak with Glack.

A little context:

My original intent was to create an environment to support dwarven RP:

A dwarven guild, with a feast hall for celebrations, a training hall for RP'ing training with younger adventurers, and a place where a bunch of dwarves could live. Somewhere centrally located for easy access by other dwarves who chose not to live there, but wanted to frequent it for RP, battle plans, trading, etc.

So we hunted down the Stonesmashers IG (Orth) and hired them to build it in the mountains East of Center (the Ire Mountains). Bron started stockpiling iron and oak, but eventually stopped since we never got the price and material list for the project, and I didn't want to be collecting things that may be not needed.

Now it's been over two years since a group of five dwarves birthed this concept, and then other dwarves got on the bandwagon with support. Can we move forward with something a little more in line with the concept than buying a small house in one of the limited areas that still has a house for sale - krandor, hlint, haven, are the only ones I found (and Haft Lake which does not work for us dwarves)?

So, is there a site we could fairly easily turn into a dwarven hearth-home / guild hall?
Maybe we could just copy the Dwarven Army Guildhall interior plans into a different site, and use that exact layout. Maybe this is a temporary location until the new Fort Wayfare, or maybe it continues as the permanent one.

Here would be a great location for a dwarven hearth-home / Guildhall:

In the Ire Mountains, Gnoll Watchtower area (just off of Ire Mountains) there are stairs up to the top of a mountain. At the top is an abandoned small fort. Perfect for the this concept!

Or, just outside Fort Vehl, the tower that seemingly has no purpose, in Dark Peak of the Watchers.

There's also an empty tower and house just outside Center on Path to the Ire Mts...

Can this be done?
Thanks!

Development Journals and Discussion / Re: Cytheria's discoveries
« on: December 31, 2020, 09:33:27 pm »
I did it!! I fed the cows! I have decided that whenever I see cows, I shall feed them. Finding enough grain to be able to feed all the cows will be difficult. At least I get milk out of it, and their moo's make it clear that they enjoy the food.

Who would have thought that Center would have so many adventurers traveling through the town! Shortly after exploring Center, I met another elf named Sorin. It was nice to see another elf, and it seems like we will be sticking together for a time. The crafting hall still had rats, so Sorin and I cleared it out. It was rough, and the catacombs were even worse, but we made it out!

We left Center for a bit and found another town. In the town, I found chickens!!! They didn't seem to want the grains I had, but I was made aware that they wanted corn. So I dragged Sorin into another area to explore so I could find corn. After finding the corn, nearby orcs attacked, and we barely survived. Right after that, I saw a skunk and tried to calm it down, but Sorin must have spooked it- he does look pretty spooky. Now Sorin can be smelled from a mile away. Not pleasant at all!

Sorin and I made it back to Center, and we saw a dwarf with the cutest Ox named Mux! The dwarf seemed a little hesitant and didn't seem to appreciate the fact that Sorin and I were elves, but perhaps it could have been the skunk smell as well. I offered him milk, and he took it! He introduced himself as Belgar, and he talked to Sorin while I was petting Mux. They decided to do some adventuring, so I went along with them. Belgar proved himself to be an excellent combat dwarf and ensured that Sorin and I were safe and healed up. The three of us fought hobgoblins, and he helped us complete a few quests. After the adventuring, he took us to a city, I believe it was called Port Hempstead. There the three of us met another adventurer. She was quite small, I believe someone mentioned her being a brownie. Her name was Martlet, but she had an Ox named Tristan and the tiniest, cutest pony named Kara. I squealed like the druid that I am! We even made a deal where I got to brush Tristan and Kara! Best deal ever!

After the four of us talked in the city, we all went to rest or craft. The next day I went to every shop I could find in the giant city, but could not find anything that could be used to feed the cows and chickens! Once again, I dragged Sorin along with me in hopes that I could find something that could be used to feed the animals.

Not far into the journey we met a well know adventurer called the Bird Lord, and he even had wings! Yet he refused to let me give him cow milk- how peculiar. The three of us protected lions from a nearby threat and then went to a town and took care of a crypt. After that, Sorin began to question the Bird Lord about everything! It became an interesting topic of conversation about Katia and her relation to nature. Shortly after, Sorin decided he needed to do some studying for his wizard spells. The Bird Lord showed me where to get some corn and how to make bread so I could feed the chickens with it! Suddenly a chicken came up to me in Center, though I don't remember there being one beforehand. It let me feed it the freshly baked cornbread and gave me some eggs. I sure do love feeding the animals. After that, I rested by the campfire while the Bird Lord continued his adventure.

I sure have met a wonderful group of adventurers so far, and I can't wait to feed more cows and chickens!

Silly old sailor. He was so confident that he could sail anywhere, but somehow he thought Dregar was Mistone. So here I am, in a town called Center. It's a strange town, not at all what I'm used to, but I was told that would be the case.

Along the way, I met a panther, and he looked quite hungry. After feeding him and giving him some water, he began to follow me, and it seemed like he wanted to protect me. I decided to call him Marco, and I hope that we can keep each other safe.

As soon as I entered the town, I met another adventurer, and thank goodness I did! His name was Jay, and he made sure that Marco and I stayed healed up. He was pretty good in combat also! He showed me where the crafting area was he helped me get rid of some pesky rats. I sure hope to see him again so I can show my gratitude.

It's strange to see such hostile creatures in a peaceful town. I have nearly no experience with situations like it, but I feel like I'm slowly learning. Power in me seems to be growing, though it's clear I still have much to learn.

After a rest, I did some exploring in the town. I heard an interesting story about how the inn got its name- crazy how a game of darts can change so much! Near the inn, I found and hung out with an ox and two cows. Man oh man, they were cute! The cows seemed hungry, so I tried to find some food for them. But they wouldn't eat anything! I'll keep trying to find something that they like, and if all else fails, I'll leave things on the ground nearby. That way, they will at least have something if they get really hungry!

Hello Layonara!

I am MusicalSiren, and I hope to soon be playing as Cytheria Raybeam. Though I'm a new player, I'm excited to be getting into this game. My dad has played this from the VERY beginning so I look forward to seeing what this game is all about.
I'm fairly new to roleplaying but I sure do love it! I guess I kind of take after my dad in that way-though I'll never admit it.
I look forward to meeting this community!

Went and did a test character with Eltalstoneves  on discord.  Came out with 8  skill points leftover following  his guide.  I suggested he might have accidently put a point or two in a skill by mistake.  I mentioned he should go through his skills to see if that is what happened.  If not the case, I suggested he request a relevel to see if he could get back on track with his build.

What is the breakdown of your levels? Was it lvl 1 and 2 were taking as Barbarian? If so the max  Listen skill you could have would be 5 (4 for level 1 and  the 5th point at level 2).  If you then took 4 levels in fighter then any points put into Listen would have been considered cross-class and you wouldn't have been able to add any points in Listen as it would have been maxed due to the skill being cross-classed.
