Layonara Server / New Character Backup System
« on: March 14, 2017, 08:49:03 pm »
Hello again good friends,It's been a while again, I hope you are all well. I don't know how to apologize for the character corruption issues we've had over the past while and my poor attempts at correcting it but I've now spent 2 days on a better system and I hope it gives you the confidence to play and not be worried now. I'm truly sorry to each and every one of you for the headaches that were caused, you should have the confidence that things like this won't happen. I also want to thank Dorg from the bottom of my heart for dealing with these issues while I was in another mode.So as I mentioned above, I'm also here to let everyone know a new version control backup system has been configured. All characters are backed up hourly and controlled with version control. This means we can go back hour by hour to see where a character file may have been corrupted and find the last good .bic file. There should no longer be any more incidents of character files getting corrupted and the last known backups being way too old.The original issue of the server filling up and running out of drive space which caused these 0 byte files SHOULD be fixed but I'm not entirely sure, it's hard to test. Either way, the new backup system will keep things much safer.Always lurking,-orth

General Discussion / To the Community - Dezza steping down
« on: September 10, 2013, 08:49:03 am »

Dear Layonara Community,

To the people I have spent so much of my online time with for such a long time I have to announce that I am not only resigning from the Lead GM position but from being a GM completely. I must apologise for this, I had fully intended to continue my role and run the Rise of the Praefuries series which I was quietly excited about.

Things being as they are, work, family and some new writing opportunities have finally taken their toll on my online time and I cannot in good conscience maintain the sort of committment required to help make Layonara a great place to be from a GM perspective.

I realise many of you have relied heavily on me for your character development, your quest fixes, your cdq's, advice on progression, etc, etc and these are the sorts of things I love the most to do for this community and I feel it deeply that I cannot continue that for you.

I will still be around, but not in the capacity that I once was. For this, I apologise. I guess all things must come to an end eventually.

See you in game.

Dezza (Aka Canuslupis)

Layonara Server / And the award goes to...
« on: February 26, 2013, 09:57:48 am »
Well, this has taken me longer than expected to put up the winners of the first ever GM awards due to various reasons, but here we go, in case you've forgotten.

*** The Popular One ***
Chosen by the community
Winner: Dezza
Reward: 1 level of XP

*** Sovereign of the Nerds ***
Chosen by the GM Team
Winner: miltonyorkcastle
Reward: 1 level of XP

*** Best in Quest ***
Awarded for most quests during the Bonus XP event
Winner: Dezza, 3 quests
Reward: 15 hours of XP (5h/quest)

*** Most Generous ***
Most uses of RP XP wand during Bonus XP event
Winner: Alatriel, used 14 times on 62 characters
Reward: 14 hours of XP (1h/use)

*** Lingering Rewards ***
Awarded for the most uses of AutoXP during Bonus XP event
Winner: Lance Stargazer, used 16 times
Reward: AutoXP at Level 3 for 23 days (1 RL week + 1RL day/use)
And of course, one level of XP goes to all GMs on top of any rewards that may be given above...With an important exception. One of our GMs, who wishes to remain anonymous, has decided to forfeit the reward earned and instead give it back to the community.  As a result, every recently-active character will be granted AutoXP for a period of two RL weeks.  This will start soon (once I get it set up). Keep a watch!

Thanks to everyone who voted and participated.

Rumour Has It / WANTED: Thieves to be tracked down
« on: February 01, 2013, 05:20:43 am »
*Tralek posts a notice on the bountyhunter and work-for-hire boards around Layonara*

WANTED:

I, Tralek Rivarmar, am hereby seeking an able-bodied group to track down the thieves who stole a shipment of goods from me and Vrebel.  I had a courier in route to the Saddlebag shop in Haven and thieves came upon him and killed my courier and stole the goods.

The group is brazen enough because they tatooed the forehead of my courier with a mark, the mark of a scarab with a tiny beetle.  I have visited the corpse of the courier and investigated the scene.  The courier appears to have been killed by a large insect.  I believe from the tatoo and the types of lacerations, that the group who perpitrated this belongs to a Cult that I experienced a long while ago out near the roughlands.

Seek them out and deal with them and any of my treasure still found upon them is yours as a reward.  Be careful, because they may lay in waiting.  I just want to repair the name of Rivarmar and let others know that I, nor my couriers, will not be messed with.  Come to my home at 207 Lor, Outskirts of Castle Mask, and I will give you more detailed information and directions.

Tralek

//I have left a Treasure Map at my house at 207 Castle Mask.  The door is unlocked and I left the map in the foyer chest labled "Orders 3".  This will require an experienced group probably in a level 20+ range.  Good luck!

General Discussion / The time has come...
« on: November 11, 2012, 10:06:39 pm »
Greetings Layonara Community,

It is with mixed feelings that I announce my retirement from the develoment of NWN-based Layonara after doing this for seven years and some change.  This is a move I have planned for some time (and almost did several times), and which has been needed for some time, but I am only just now making it a reality.  My development focus is now shifting completely to the MMO effort and Layonara's long-term future.

To keep NWN Layonara going in a development sense, I now officially pass the torch to the capable hands of Script Wrecked, who will now be responsible for all future fixes and updates.

I know you've all heard this plenty of times, but...this is not a “good-bye” letter. I am still very committed to and invested in Layonara and its long-term future. I still like to play here even (when the stars align properly), GM here and participate in this community. I do not see these things changing.  My presence will remain, but my fingerprints will no longer be on the updates.

There's not a lot more to say here, so join with me in congratulating Script Wrecked on his new position.

NWN Ideas, Suggestions, Requests / Ship captains more clear destinations
« on: August 15, 2012, 12:50:25 pm »
Could we put a simple addition to the dialogue of the ship captains.

Example.

Right now I can choose "Mariners Hold" from the Port Hempsted ship captain. Could we get it and others to change to be more like this.

Mariners Hold - Alindor

Giving folks an idea of what continent they are about to sail to. It's something people would know, should know anyway right?  Unless they just like to pick destinations at random. LOL

I take this for granted since Ive known where the boats go for years now... but it really can be confusing for new players.

Thanks for considering this.

Rumour Has It / Tesak Cult unearthed in Castle Hilm
« on: July 07, 2012, 05:38:25 am »
Word spreads quickly that a Surveyor of Aragen, Iellwen, in seeking out some lost documents belonging to the Aeridinites has stumbled across a Drach Tesak cell in the city.

Using her powers of observation and written records the Surveyor was able to locate the individuals supporting the establishment of the cell in the city and the main ringleader behind it.

Together with support from local authorities including Sir Lance the cell and all documents and materials they held were captured or killed in the final assault on their location.

Rumours persist that the Aeridinite documents which where the Surveyors primary concern contain extensive notes on post traumatic Myr'drach injuries sustained by allied soldiers in the war against the Cult and observations and treatment methodologies for them. Important information indeed.

General Discussion / High Tides Postponed!!!
« on: June 20, 2012, 06:25:31 pm »
So sorry folks!  Tried logging in today after work and something seems royally off with my texture files.  My bottom row is blank with white boxes, and long stretches of the tilesets are blotted out gray or black, with very heavy chopping.  I tried reinstalling all of added hak content and rolling back my video card drivers, but to no avail.  Going to have to re-install the whole game.  We all know how long that takes...  So it seems I must postpone tonight's session.  Again my apologies.  Once I get this fixed we'll reschudeul for the earliest time possible.  Been far too long since the last session!

General Discussion / Back in Action!
« on: May 05, 2012, 01:26:05 am »
My apologies for my questers!  I had some family issude that needed attending to following a death in the family.  Had to run off for a bit since that and work were getting hectic.  After much soul-searching and alone time, mostly via rum, X3, Risen 2 and other vices, feeling back up to running quests again and playing more in game.  I will be at a big barbecue this weekend with friends and getting a haircut for a job search (dont worry, still employed, just looking to upgrade), but I should be back intot he flow of things this upcoming week.  I intend on running the next installment of The Razorback Syndicate within the next week, 2 tops.

ALSO!  I noticed that I've been neglecting my CDQ queue quite a bit and for that I apologize!  I noticed that they kept getting buried in PMs and tells, so I looked online and noticed that I never set up my CDQ request page propr! (tsk tsk Brew!)  I have 3 in the queue now and have detailed what I need from you guys to send me to get these started.  Please comment in the linked forum attachment so that I can address what your goals are, what you're looking for in a quest and I shall try to run at least one every other week.  Here's the link to that!

Again, my apologies for my absence.  Needed some time to get my head together, and figured I shouldn't have access to a Kill-Wand in the meantime! ;)

General Discussion / Apologies
« on: September 18, 2011, 05:52:26 am »
Hey everyone,

I want to apologise for my relative inactivity on the quest calendar. I see my role as GM as 99.9% as that of quest provider and I have been below par in this role for the last few weeks.

Want to hear my excuse? Probably not, it's nothing too exciting anyway. Just work, work and more work. If people would just stop assaulting each other, selling drugs, stealing things and generally treat others as they themselves would want to be treated, I would have heaps more time to run quests!!

That said, I have one more week of work craziness before things return to normal and I hope I shall be able to run a scheduled open-to-all quest every week.

Cheers,

Pseudonym

General Discussion / A serious discusion about rules and spirit.
« on: June 20, 2011, 04:25:08 pm »
I was talking with another player who is relatively new to the community and I was surprised at the lack of understanding of the spirit of Layonara. For those of us that have been here for many years and have transitioned through the many changes of the structure of Layo it has been a evolution in thinking. But to newer players there is not that foundation in the past. I think this is why every few years we run into the "but just tell me the rules" type of threads (I wrote a few myself). As I see it the team really does not want to write up a comprehensive set of rules covering every aspect of play. I think they went far out of the way not to do so. As Dorg and many others like to say if it feels wrong then dont do it. But while that works for players steeped in Layo history I am seeing it does not work for newer players. So I am opening this discussion for us to talk about what is the spirit of Layo? How do you see it as a player? and What do you do to support that spirit?

I will start by listing a few things as I see them:

1. Playing does not = getting XP
Yes NWN is a goal driven system but Layo does not have to be.
2. If a RP session is spontaneously happening go with it.
Yes it means that sometimes (hopefully most times) you wont be running off to kill things. But you will spend time talking about the events of the world or developing some depth to your PC. Interrupting a RP session or breaking away from one to go get XP is in my opinion not in the spirit of Layo.
3. Witty banter while running around killing things is super light weight RP at its best.
Take the time to stop and talk and enjoy the stories and company of who you are with. Of course there are times when you are just trying to barrel your way out of the deep so you don't have to log out down there :P.
4. Do interesting things with your PC when developing it.
You don't have to build a super perfect build every time.
5. Power leveling is not, again in my opinion, in the spirit of Layo.
It is not a race to 40th level. I know that at times many of us get caught up in that race but every level and stage is fun.

I have more to say but this is a start. I am trying to give the newer players insight into what each of us feels the spirit of Layo is.

General Discussion / Resigning as GM
« on: May 31, 2011, 04:40:17 am »
It is time for me to hand my GM batch to another.

The plot is nearing its end and the remaining parts are in very capable hands. ;)

So, after more years than I care to count I am resigning from my position as GM in Layonara's amazing Team of GMs.

Before I move on to being 'just' a player I have one thing I would like to ask all you players out there:

At times on quests where you feel wronged or feel that the outcome was not fair, please try to remember why the GMs are here. They are here to make this world around your characters a living and breathing entity that provides you with entertainment and fun. That is the basic idea.

So, instead of taking the fight to the GM and/or the Team, try to consider whether the incident in question is one that your character might deal with in an IC fashion - perhaps that was the intent of the GM in the first place.

Like you, GMs are people and people will walk away if you rattle them enough. After all, they are not acting GMs for their own sake, but for the sake of others.

This was not based on a recent episode or a current situation in game. Please consider this a plea that you might consider in the future. I have seen it happen too many times over the years and it simply burns people out, which ends up making this place less colourful and alive.

Finally, I wish you all the very best of luck and hope that many of you will continue to contribute to this magical place that is Layonara. For me the time has come to move on, although I will probably be around with Kobal now and then.

Kind regards,

Harlas
